Review: the art deco Sheraton Grand London Park Lane hotel – Part 2

Here is part two of my review of the Sheraton Grand Park Lane hotel in London, which has just been extensively refurbished and is now back to its 1920’s art deco glory.

Restaurants and bars at Sheraton Grand Park Lane

Mercante

The Italian restaurant Mercante opened in July. The design and menu are reminiscent of Italian food markets with dishes available in three different sizes to be ordered as sharing plates, tapas or mains.

Looking at tables full of meat like this one, I wonder how I was ever a vegetarian …

My friend joined me for dinner and we decided to order a selection of small plates as everything on the menu sounded delicious.

Top tip: Order the kale!

Breakfast is also served at Mercante.  You can order a la carte or you can pay £19 for the cold buffet £25 for hot buffet. Typically when booked at the same time as a room the breakfast buffet is an extra £15.50 per person.

There was a good selection of cereals, fresh juices …..

….. and also a vast meat and cheese selection with fresh bread.

You can order egg dishes and have them prepared for you in the open kitchen.  I had a delicious omelette with mushrooms, bacon and cheese.

Smith & Whistle

Smith & Whistle is the new 1920’s inspired bar at the Sheraton Grand.  It serves craft beers, cocktails and small dishes to share or combine to a main.

Palm Court Lounge

Here is a picture of the Palm Court Lounge which is where you enter the hotel if you walk in from Piccadilly.

The art deco interiors have been beautifully restored and it is a great place for afternoon tea or a drink.

Sheraton Club Lounge

Rooms on the 7th and 8th floor come with complimentary access to the Sheraton Club Lounge.

The lounge serves breakfast Monday to Friday from 6:30am – 11am and from 7am – 11am at the weekend.

From 11am – 2:30pm snacks, biscuits, soft drinks, tea and coffee are served and from 2:30pm – 4pm there is afternoon tea.  In the evenings from 5:30pm – 7:30pm alcoholic drinks and snacks are served.

When I took this picture there were only some dry snacks in the jars, however later in the evening there was a good selection of canapes.

Here is what I had before going for dinner.  They were tasty but it probably isn’t enough for anyone who wasn’t planning to eat dinner elsewhere.

The Sheraton Club Lounge also has a meeting room at the far back that can be used on a complimentary basis by anyone who has lounge access.

Silver Gallery

Here are a few photographs of the beautiful public spaces at the Sheraton Grand.  This is the 70 year old Silver Gallery which acts as Sheraton’s luxurious entrance to the ballroom.

Ballroom

The ballroom at the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane is Grade II listed and has been renovated to a high standard.

It’s the only intact full-size art deco ballroom in London.  It was used as a filmset for the original Titanic movie as well as Revolver, Goldeneye, The Danish Girl and many more.

During World War II it was agreed that the House of Parliament or House of Lords could use the ballroom if their buildings were destroyed.

Tudor Rose Room

Conclusion

The Sheraton Grand London Park Lane definitely impressed me.  The multi million pound renovation has taken this fading art deco property and kicked it into the 21st century whilst keeping the original style alive.

The location is great for everyone who wants to stay in the heart of London.  Buckingham Palace, Westminster and Piccadilly Circus in walking distance and Green Park is right in front of the hotel.  It is, frankly, a far more impressive property post renovation than the nearby InterContinental or Hilton hotels on Park Lane.

If you live in London, I still recommend paying the Sheraton Grand a visit and having a drink or afternoon tea in the Palm Court.

As a Starwood Preferred Guest redemption, the hotel is in Category 6 and costs 20,000 SPG points per night.  That is the same as the Le Meridien Piccadilly a few hundred metres away which is nowhere near as impressive.
