Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Open forum …. any suggestions for tweaking the site?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

It is exactly two years since I last ran an ‘open forum’ where I opened up the comments to ideas on tweaking the site.  It worked well so I thought I would try it again.

Without a huge team behind me, any changes to Head for Points will always be ‘evolution not revolution’.  That said, because there are now two of us there is more flexibility.  Some of the benefits of that in recent months have been:

Logo without text PNG

the Christmas party, which could never have been done without a second pair of hands (the fact that I’d never done it before is proof of that)

the introduction of video to our reviews and the launch of a YouTube channel

increased review coverage, both of hotels and via press events such as the recent Cathay lounge launch

letting Anika write 95% of Shopper Points, freeing up more of my time for HfP

On the short list for improvements is:

an improved mobile site

the introduction of a Q&A page where readers can post questions which other readers can answer (this will NOT be a forum, it will be a specific Q&A page)

the reintroduction of a luxury hotel booking service (coming in January)

However, I am fully aware that there is an element of ‘snow blindness’ in what we do. After all, we look at the site every day for a considerable period of time, and we can only second-guess how you, the readers, respond to the different elements.

As we start a new year, I’d like to open up the floor to any suggestions you have about the site. Remember that I need to cater for two audiences at the same time – the regular readers and the thousands of people who come here via Google each day and who I want to convert into regular readers.

Is it clear to a newcomer what the site is about and why they should keep on reading it?

Are there too many menus at the top of the page? Too few?

Are there too many ads? (Probably not, most sites would run ads inside posts as well, which I don’t)

Are the sidebars too confusing? Should I push the social media links more?

Should there be more ‘sticky’ information for newcomers?

Does the mix of content – which veers from Tesco deals to airline deals to credit card sign-up offers – work for you?

Is the mix of news versus ‘reference / background’ articles (eg ‘How to use Combine My Avios with Iberia’) right?

Does the current format of running a fixed number of stories at fixed times every day – with a ‘lead’ story and two less important ones below – work for you? (Most sites just post at random times throughout the day, but I am middle-aged and grew up with the newspaper tradition!)

If there is anything about the way the site currently looks that annoys or confuses you, or if you have any ideas for improvements, please post below. You can also email me at rob [at] headforpoints.com if you’d prefer.

Anything from your dislike of how I punctuate the headlines through to ideas for new ‘sticky’ pages are welcome – no idea is too small.  And, to be honest, small changes are easier to implement than large changes ….

Thank you, and a Happy New Year for 2017.

Happy New Year! Yes one of my first reads of the day too ! I like the fact there are headings so info on some articles I can skip and concentrate on articles of interest to me! Re uk based and relevant.. excellent! Trying to cover too much dilutes what its all about POINTS!!

I have just come to the site to look for reviews of airport lounges but could not locate, perhaps a search engine (Googles customised search engines work well…)

    • Rob says:

Search box on the right, put in lounge review and it should find them. They need indexing I admit.

    Hello Rob,

As always – thank you for your hard work. Suggestions from me
    – I don’t have a massive issue with viewing the site on mobile, it works fine. Please be very careful with building a mobile site, can often do more harm than good! I’d suggest having an easy, clear link back to the full desktop version if you go down that route.
    – Minor OCD change, can you make the HFP banner at the top a higher-res image to look better on retina displays? It looks a bit dated on newer high res screens.
    – I really like the format of 3 articles first thing every day (barring any breaking news exceptions) – stick with it!
    – The Q&A page sounds like a nice experiment. I value the OT comments as much as the article itself sometimes – it would be a shame to lose that.

Really like the site. Visit every day.

One aspect of the interface that really bugs me (on the mobile site at least):
Just below the article there are links to the neighbouring posts. These have the title of the posts these work like this:
Click LEFT for the NEXT post (more recent)
Click RIGHT for the PREVIOUS post (less recent.
Then there are a few adverts and social media links. Then there are next and previous buttons, but these are the other way round!
PREVIOUS is on (and points) LEFT
NEXT is on (and points) RIGHT
This inconsistency melts my brain and I frequently find myself going back to the home page as I can’t work out whether the article I have read is left or right of the ones I haven’t.

So not a big thing, but it would be amazing if it was changed.

    • Rob says:

Can’t be fixed on the current site but will be done when we change it.

Hi, again. Could I ask what the potential time line may be for any proposed changes ? I have an OT question but happy to file it for later. I tried on FT but got some pretty differing answers. Tx.

    • Mikeact says:

Sorry, note my name mistake previously, an extra e which I can’t remove !

  • David Prior says:

Content is great! I find the layout good, and I don’t find the adverts intrusive.

I think the Q&A section you mention is needed, at present valuable information will often appear as an answer to an OT question, which makes it hard to find in future – if there was a way all of these could be categorised/etc, that’d be great. However could you go further than a Q&A and allow people to post useful info that isn’t a response to a question – again at present useful tips can appear as OT comments.

The ability to subscribe to updates via email (preferably with the choice between a mail per post or a daily digest mail), or RSS feed would be really appreciated.

Comments on posts seem to be disabled after a while – I’m not sure this is the best idea, someone may want to ask “is this still valid” or similar. If you do feel you have to disable comments after a while, could you add something prominent saying that comments have closed on the article?

Try and read the site every day, sometimes forget when I am away but always catch up later.

I first came across the site when I decided to push for Accor status, having booked with the Sofitel Bayerpost direct after having problems earlier last year with Expedia. I found the article on the “quiz” thing that was worth over 1k points. Classic then, platinum today. Thanks for that.

To be honest, I only tend to read the daily posts and interesting links they flag up, so there’s not much I’d change.

  • Fraser says:

I like the morning articles timing. Today’s (2nd Jan) seem to have lost the “click here to read comments” link though.

I agree grouping archived articles by destination would be handy. For instance, trying to work out the best redemption for Dubai between BA, Emirates, Etihad, Virgin or Air Berlin may not be obvious, and which hotels would give the best value fo points and/or upgrades.

In general I love the articles and style of writing, and find the shopper points crossover (half price Tesco toys) and Amex Platinum deals very useful. I’ve picked up a lot of bonus points and got BA Silver thanks to a Qatar flight ex-CPH all thanks to HfP.

One thing I could really do with is a list of previous deals which have yet to post points, and when to expect them (just as you have deals to sign up for before they expire). Specifically I’m waiting for the Sunday Times Travel Magazine (4500 Avios) and the Avis weekend (18000) to post, although curiously I have got 700 Avios in my Iberia account from the car hire, but no bonus yet.

And as others have said, some more focus on non-BA deals (especially Flying Blue) would be good, as these make a lot more sense flying from Edinburgh! The monthly AF/KLM bargain redemptions, especially business class, would be well worth highlighting.

2 emails failed to send today and were done manually which reduces functionality.
