News in brief:

More Luxury Travel Diary auctions launched

The Luxury Travel Diary site dropped me a line about another wave of its auctions closing soon.

Interesting options closing in the next 48 hours include four nights at the Sofitel in Essaouira, Morrocco and two nights at the Four Seasons Nile Plaza in Cairo.  If you are near Batley, there is a £100 voucher for the Potting Shed Spa currently at £3.  Not everything will work for you, either in terms of location, length or dates, but you’ll probably find something of interest if you poke around.

New American Express cashback travel deal

American Express Travel is currently offering £50 back on a £200 spend.  This should show as an offer on your online statement page and needs to be ‘saved’ to your card in order to activate it.

The transaction must be made online, which limits you to simple transactions which do not require a telephone call, and before 28th February.  This could be attractive for some prepaid hotel bookings and cheaper flight bookings although you would need to weigh up the risk of any hotel stay being non-qualifying.

Annoyingly, a generous offer of £200 back on a £1,000 Trailfinders booking seems to have reached its cap of 4,000 registered cards very quickly.  I can no longer find it against any of our six family cards.

    Re Hilton
    Think they are calling it.
    It’s a travelution.
They conducted a survey a while ago,
    Nothing sounded good to me

    • Rob says:

That’s not it, apparently. I spoke to the head of HH about it at the time and he denied it (and it was an incredibly stupid idea). The fact that none of the hashtags or feeds mentioned in that survey actually existed meant I believed him.

      • peter says:

they paid a lot of £75 for taking the survey if they were just going to scrap the changes

    First Utility, meant to say

    • James67 says:

Keep your fingers crossed nothing goes wrong or you’ll end up expending £100s in terms of your time

      • the real harry says:

not sure if you mean FU CS in particular being problematic – or switching in general

I must have switched about 12 or 14 times in the last 5 years and never had any issues except when once I misread an electricity dial, in itself a very minor issue that got resolved shortly

took me about 20 mins today to research a few deals then 3 mins to switch, it’s so simple

        • James67 says:

I’ve never had problems switching either, it was when I left first utility I ran into horrendous problems getting a final bill and a refund from them. It took months and endless calls and emails. I settled on decent compensation with them but it didn’t cover the time and hassle involved. I thought I might have been unlucky but since then I’ve seen nunerous reports of poor CS. They like you to submut meter readings monthly but after doing so you have to wait about a week for the bill online. If you miss a reading they generate a bill anyway then cancel it next time you submit a reading with a very messy statement as a result.

  • Chris says:

    Very OT:

One of the IHG Credit cards (Barclaycard Visa vs new Creation Mastercard) posts the free night at the end of the membership year, and the other posts in the month you hit £10k

    Question is, which is which!?

    • Alan says:

Ooh that’s an easy one! After £10k send for Barclaycard, at end of 12 months for Creation.

Do I win anything? If only pub quizzes had these sort of questions!

  • Fenny says:

Ooh, that 3 deal sounds interesting. I’m about due for a renewal of my contract, so will have a look at what else I could get from CPW that compares.

    • Fenny says:

Cheers, I’ll have a look. I don’t really use my phone that much, but the FAH data when abroad is the benefit here. I’m currently paying £10/month including a handset, but am quite happy with the phone, so a SIM only deal is fine. It will save me money and time over the year by not looking for local SIMs when I’m travelling.

      • Alan says:

Yep, I’ve found FAH data rates pretty rubbish but the lack of hassle us good and not having to worry about cost for receiving calls also great. Was in USA then Canada a couple of months ago and found it such a pain when I didn’t have it in Canada!

  • Genghis says:

Tidy. I’ll come to you next time I renew!

    • Alan says:

Haha it’s the benefit of an extra bank holiday in Scotland today – tidying up all these household things when the companies are open down South! 😀

  • Genghis says:

When I was at LBG I was always jealous of my Scottish colleagues’ extra bank holiday.

    • Alan says:

Haha well I’ve made the most of it, Wed to Fri last week was very busy at work!

  • Liz says:

I’ve looked at that too over the Xmas period as I am on the Eon V19 tariff. Also Eons new v21 does not include the rewards – only their standard rate. I have till the end of the month to decide where to go.

    • Mike says:

Ah, someone else that’s getting shafted by Eon. I’m on v19 and it’s just about to expire. The new offer is shocking – £60 a month more. Last year they done the same and I sat it out and they came along with a much better offer. I’ve got 1600 pts sitting on the account at the moment but noticed the new tariff offers don’t come with rewards points. Time to move on I think.

  • Sohan says:

By the way last night I got a free drink voucher at a Hilton for the first time since I was told they were gone several months ago. Mistake or u turn?…
