News in brief:

Double dip on Caffe Nero purchases

A new cashback offer has appeared on a lot of American Express accounts.  You may find this on your online statement page by clicking the ‘Offers’ tab.

You will receive 10% cashback on all purchases at Caffe Nero made before 29th March.  Department store concessions are excluded.

As we wrote last month, Caffe Nero is also the highlight of the new ‘earn Avios from in-store shopping’ service launched over at avios.com.   Once you have registered your credit or charge card with Avios, you receive 10 Avios points per £1 spent at Caffe Nero.

If you register the same American Express card which you used to load the cashback deal, this means that you will receive 10% cashback plus 10 Avios per £1 spent at Caffe Nero until 29th March.

Bargain Hilton redemptions at the DoubleTree Kuala Lumpur

The DoubleTree in Kuala Lumpur is generally regarded as one of the best Hilton HHonors redemptions available anywhere in the world.   I haven’t stayed there myself and wouldn’t normally mention it for that reason, but a reader dropped me a note on the hotel last week which made me think that I should give it a plug.

The DoubleTree is a Hilton HHonors Category 2 hotel.  This means that it is just 10,000 Hilton points per night.  KL is not very expensive, of course, so you need to look at this in the context of local rates.  Given my valuation of 0.3p per Hilton point, however, it is still great value.

If you don’t have any Hilton points, you’d need to convert 6,667 Virgin Atlantic miles or 5,000 American Express Membership Rewards points per night.

As with all Hilton redemptions, if you have Hilton status – and you get free Silver status with the free Hilton credit card or free Hilton Gold with American Express Platinumyou get five redemption nights for the points of four.  This means you pay just 8,000 Hilton HHonors points per night on a five night stay.

This is what the reader said:

I have just come back from Kuala Lumpur where I believe I have made my best ever redemption on a Hilton property – DoubleTree KL – and would like to share it, because I think it’s a hot tip to anyone who may have a KL trip planned.

It’s a steal at only 10k points per night.  I booked a basic room and got upgraded to a suite.  This was due to my Hilton Diamond status – which by the way I have to thank you for. I saw your status matching post and requested Hilton whether they would give me Diamond for having Concierge at Carlson, and they did.

The hotel has an executive lounge, accessible to Diamond status holders.  It’s on the 34th floor with amazing views over the city, breakfast is served and there is also a happy hour (free food and drinks) which runs from 5:30-7:30pm each day of the week.

Because we stayed a whole week, it ended up costing me only 8,700 points per night. At this rate, I find it impossible for anyone to go wrong with this hotel. It’s a world apart from any other Hilton property we stayed before.

The hotel home page is here if you want to find out more.  You can see a full list of all Hilton Category 2 (10,000 point per night) hotels here.

O/T F&Booze compo, reply turned around in 4 days.
blah blah blah stock response &
‘I can see you made your booking before the new catering offering was announced. I’m sorry there won’t be a complimentary service on your flight, however you’ll be able to buy from the delicious and seasonally inspired M&S menu. Branded beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks will also be available to buy. As a gesture, please accept 1,000 Avios points. The Avios have been added to each of your Executive Club accounts and can be used to purchase items on board short-haul flights.’

4 down, 26 to go. That might be where the problems start as other people say they got refused at second time of complaint on a different booking.

My personal favourite hotel in KL remains Traders (part of Shangri La group). Great view of Petronas towers and KLCC park and it is linked to the KLCC (convention centre) covered walkways which have air con, this lets you walk all the way to Bukit Bintang and Pavilion Mall and avoid the heat. You can also work round to the towers and the mall. Also due to its location what is overlooked is Sunway Pyramid / Lagoon, a huge shopping complex with a water park and hotels.

The nice thing about a trip to Malaysia is that although the pound has tanked against most currencies (and it has), the ringgit has dropped massively (for a variety of reasons) meaning Malaysia remains great value.

Uber taxis have become very popular and are a good way of getting around cheaply, although KL traffic jams can last all night.

With an O2 sim, Nero gives free drink on Tuesdays.
In addition, the Virgin Red app does 241 all week.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Not seen the 2-4-1 for a while now?

      • Brian says:

The Virgin Red 2-4-1 has disappeared. The Virgin people say they are waiting for Caffe Nero to release the codes, but it’s obvious that it has just gone. Shame – it made coffee quite affordable!

Semi OT but Hilton related – got my HHonors VISA cert for meeting £750 spend – 5th time with the card, last closed it in June, reopened in Dec.

      As Mr Burns says, “Excellent”!

      • James67 says:

@Harry, thanks, I think I’ll risk sending it over then as even tbe standard avios will tidy up my balance to another round 150k.

@Alan, my most recent voucher was used in last few days of validity last month. It was my preceeding voucher in 2015 I used out of date. Used it in the ultimate sin city, Pattaya, as one of a two night stay for a grandstand balcony view of international fireworks festival. They are truely awesome, nothing anyplace at new year or even olympics comes close. No big loss on Lloyds card as I’m thinking of dumping it for a BAPP in March anyway.

Data point re:Barclaycard/Hilton free night. My certificate expires 8th Feb 2016. It was declined when I tried to book for the 11th Feb 2016.

      • James67 says:

Yes, that’s my guess. Just try the old BMI approach…if at first you don’t succeed just hang up and try again!

        • Alan says:

…and hope you get Dennis, so that you get ticketed without miles being deducted 😀

  • Genghis says:

Very OT. Figured out how to make a points package booking on the IHG app.
If people interested, click ‘Book now’, select the room, then the rates come up and one of them should be for a points package. Bit stupid of me originally to not click all the way through.
The mattress run is back on…

  • Mark newstart says:

I am doing a mattress run for my first time this weekend … Any tips would be very useful with it being my first time

  • Joeninety says:

Any update on the Nero avios earning? The above article is still saying 10/pound. After abandoning Starbucks (and the shorter walk) for the last two weeks my earning rate has suddenly dropped. Two set of purchases posted today one 6 avios per 6 pounds and one 4 avios per 2 pounds spent.
Given the Avios advertising stating a one way european flight/year if you buy a coffee each working day something is way off. The T&C statement saying that the rate may vary is tantamount to saying you may or may not get the avios we promised you!! Surely one for the ASA if I knew how to do that.

  • Nicholas Monaghan says:

It seems that the Cafe Nero in store award has already been cut to 1 Avios pointier pound spent.
