Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

ENDING SOON: £15 off £25 at Amazon for ALL Amex Gold and Platinum holders

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

If you missed this offer when I wrote about it just before Christmas, or you simply forgot about it in the whirl of the festive season, it isn’t too late.

You still have time to save £15 on your next Amazon order of £25 or more as long as you part-pay with Membership Rewards points.

This offer is open to anyone with a Green, Gold, Platinum or Centurion Amex charge card.  If your account is set to ‘no marketing’ then you won’t have been contacted about it, but you can still take part.

As I wrote in this article here, you can now use your American Express Membership Rewards points to pay for Amazon orders.

The rate is poor – just 0.45p per point.  You are far better off using your points for something more valuable such as airline miles or hotel points.

The process is seamless though.  Once you have linked your Membership Rewards account to your Amazon account, you will be given the option to pay or part-pay with points every time you check out.

There is a little quirk in this deal which lets you maximise the value you get.

This is what you need to do to save £15:

If you have not already done so, link your Membership Rewards account with your Amazon account by visiting this page on the Amazon website

Buy £25 of items on amazon.co.uk (these must all be sold by Amazon and not third party merchants, and excludes digital content, including digital gift cards)

Enter code AMEX16SWP at check out

You MUST select your Membership Rewards-earning Amex card as your payment card (you cannot use gift cards or any other payment source)

Part-pay for your order using Membership Rewards points.  The sneaky option is to redeem just 2 points for a 1p discount.  This saves you ‘wasting’ MR points on a low value redemption.

The offer runs for another few days until 31st January.  It is limited to the first 33,333 people to order but, oddly, the cap does not seem to have been hit so far.

  • Graham Walsh says:

Seems that it can only be used once per card, is that correct?

  • rams1981 says:

since when? i was about to use it 4 times but the last 2 transactions were cancelled. I thought they had wised up to multiple usage of same AMEX

  • Chris says:

    OT for a change:

I can’t remember, does the HH free night cert on the VISA get issued soon as you hit 10k or at statement generation in the month that you do?

Need a night next month at Conrad in Westminster, if it’s the former I can get the card and bring forward 10k on it easy, if the latter no point…

    • Liz says:

It’s the IHG card that you need to spend £10K on not the HH card. The HH card is only £750 spend – it appears in your account a few weeks after you hit the spend.

      • Chris says:

You’re right it is, and hell let’s give it a crack then

      • Chris says:

Oooh one other question (and this applies to the IHG card too actually) – can you link more than one HH VISA (eg me and spouse ) to same HH account?

        • Genghis says:

Don’t believe so. I think an individual’s card needs to be linked to their loyalty account. Obviously there’s supplementary cards but that’s a different matter.

          • Chris says:

my OH’s VISA is currently linked to my HH account, so that much appears to be OK, just wondered whether it was an issue to link two to a single HH account

It is kinda similar to the situation with IHG where you can have the old barclaycard visa and new creation mcard linked to the same IHG account (but those are from different providers, naturally)

            Anyone got experience with trying?

    • Anon says:

HH Gold is achieved at the £10k spend, but not sure if it’s instant or on anniversary?

  • Zild says:

Damn. I missed this one and spent enough on Xmas presents at Amazon in December to have made use of it. Instead just before Xmas I cancelled my Amex Gold and now cannot take advantage of this at all!

You win some you lose some, I guess.

  • James T says:

Fantastic – many thanks for the reminder!

  • Ed says:

Cracking. Got it to work. Guess that’s my HFP sub for the year paid. 🙂

After you register your card and go to the checkout page you need to apply points (I entered £0.01) to the spend /before/ you add the promotional code. Got some books coming tomorrow it seems.

  • Scottydogg says:

I did this on my gold card before Christmas and bought a Fire stick for £28 , less the £15 means it was £13 which I was very happy about .
We have just activated the gold card in my partners name but there is no reward points in there yet , do the reward points go in instantly , suppose I was to spend £5 at lunch ?

  • Gin and Tonic Please says:

Just to confirm, I’ve just added my Amex Plat card to my partner’s Amazon account, linked to my MR account (as per the link above) and successfully redeemed for a second time on the same card. So (a) the code is still working as of 13:00 today, and (b) you can use it more than once (if you have multiple accounts). 🙂
