Farce as new BA Gatwick South lounge remains closed due to failed ‘life safety’ test

Wednesday was the day that British Airways moved its Gatwick operations over to the South Terminal.

The good news is that check in seemed to be working fine when I was there, with no sign of delays.  To be honest, using a bit of wood to separate the Club World and First Class check-in desks is not the most elegant solution but it does the job (and, in truth, it looks better than my photo suggests!):

British Airways Gatwick South terminal

What I didn’t like is that BA has taken over the ‘A-C’ desk area.  It is quite a walk from the train station to those desks, and you have to pass the huge number of Thomson, Norwegian etc desks on the way.  More annoyingly, once you’ve dropped your bag, you need to double-back on yourself to take the escalator up to departures.  Anyone with just hand baggage doesn’t need to go anywhere near the BA check-in area.

Security was also swift.  The Premium line merges into the front of the standard line, so there should not be any chance of finding that the main line is quicker!

The bad news is that the British Airways Gatwick South lounges have failed their ‘life safety’ electrical tests and have not been allowed to open.  A staff member told me that this was apparently known a few days ago but the news was not released.  There is no timetable yet for their opening.

A number of contingency plans are in place:

First and Gold passengers on all flights and premium ticketed passengers on the Bermuda, New York and Jersey services are using the Gatwick South No 1 Clubrooms which I reviewed here.  I should warn you, however, that they were already restricting access due to overcrowding when I was there and I had to use my press clout to get in.

All other eligible passengers are using the old Virgin Atlantic lounge in Gatwick South which has been renamed Speedbird Lounge but otherwise is as Virgin left it last night!

There is also the very impressive new No 1 Lounge which Anika reviewed here and which, if you have a Priority Pass, may be a better bet

As my tour of the BA Gatwick South lounge wasn’t going to happen, I ended up in the Clubrooms.  This is an impressive facility when used for small groups, which is its intended purpose, but is not ideal for business travellers as there is no solo seating.

The food and drink remains excellent, however, with Eggs Royale and champagne promptly delivered to my table:

Interesting… surprised to see such a critical PPM task overlooked by the BA Safety Team. At least they’ve responded somewhat quickly with their contingencies.

  • Anon says:

Rob – Couldnt make it up eh? 😉

Be interesting to see what it’s like when the BA Lounge finally officially opens…

When I was at the VS CH in Nov, I was lamenting that it would be my last visit there, hope the new one is even better, have VS invited you to that in the other terminal?

    • Rob says:

No, even though I know most of the Flying Club team, the VS press office don’t like me for some reason and didn’t even send me the pretty pictures which you can see at businesstraveller.com this morning! Heaven knows what they pay those people but it is clearly too much given they lose out on our 1.3m monthly page views …..

      • barnaby100 says:

Is that why you don’t post when they have low fares such as the £1072 upper class from Manchester to Boston direct with price matching themselves via JFK that I posted as an OT twice last week? And still available.

        • Rob says:

Yes, sorry, forgot about that. If you email me deals, they go into a folder which I work down. Stuff in the comments often gets forgotten, unfortunately.

        • Mark says:

          Ooo please tell me more

          • barnaby100 says:

Virgin are doing a summer service from March to Boston. The plane is doing half the week to Boston and half to San Franscisco. SF is about £1700 for an upper class return (which is about £300 cheaper than BA from LHR for same dates). But Boston is £1071. You have to jiggle and choose the exact dates they fly. For example the 8th to 15th April is £1071. I found dates in August as well (only searched April and August). Oddly they also seem to be price matching themselves with manchester to JFK and then Delta to Boston at a similar price. It is years since Virgin UC has been at this price. Boston cheapest from LHR is usually about £1500. No clubhouse at manchester though.

Even better. As i said I only checked April and August

          • barnaby100 says:

Had another look. It is £999 all the way through to mid October flying out on a Wednesday with a couple of date exceptions.

      • Cassie says:

        Shame.
The new VS clubhouse in the north terminal looks terrific – they should get you across there immediately and really stick it to BA….

        • Leo says:

So VS have managed to open their new lounge bang on time after having their clubhouse up and running throughout the whole terminal change. BA has had NO lounge and haven’t managed to open one after 15 months. Marvellous.

  • Sussex Bantam says:

Well that news made me laugh this morning – they’ve only had 15 months to get this done after all…

    • Aeronaut says:

Perhaps they used the same contractors as the new Berlin airport…

      • John says:

Maybe the LHR CX lounge may be a more apt comparison, since I do expect this lounge to actually open, which I can’t say for BER.

  • 2bad4ya says:

Just wanted to mention that Heathrow & Gatwick both have free soft-play lounges hidden away in the back for kids – a great not well publicised resource.

    • Stu says:

Not sure if you meant a kids play area in the lounge, but in the public area in Heathrow T5 there’s a *great* soft play area (nr A7). The BA lounge kids area for was “just ok”- not much to amuse them.

At Gatwick, the soft play area in North terminal, public area, was small and not great either.

  • Rob says:

Some photos of the Speedbird Lounge on our Instagram feed (Instagram.com/headforpoints)

  • 1nfrequent says:

There’s really no excuse for the electrics issue. That should be basic construction that any half decent contractor gets right. At the very least I hope that BA is hammering that contractor with LDs.

OT: Just noticed on Business Traveller that Manchester Airport are going to open a new lounge in T3 called 1903:

    https://www.businesstraveller.com/news/2017/01/25/manchester-airport-open-adult-lounge/

The renders look like it could be could be where the BA lounge is. Anyone know any more?

    • Trickster says:

They’ve confirmed via twitter that this is a new lounge, and no resizing of BA or Escape lounges. Possibly in the unused space to the left of the BA lounge as you look out the window?

  • Russell Evans says:

Well, that puts a spanner in the works for my trip to Malta from Gatwick tomorrow. Was hoping to get in the new lounge early – shambolic, but not entirely unexpected from BA these days!
