Bits: Airportr ski equipment offer, BA refusing to budge on ‘two tickets’ baggage transfer

News in brief:

Airportr offering free transfer of ski equipment this winter

We’ve covered Airportr a few times on Head for Points.  This is the luggage collection service whereby your suitcases can be collected from your home or office and taken to the airport for you to pick up in the departure terminal – or in some cases they can even be checked in for you.

On your return, you can drop your cases with them whilst you head straight to your home or office – and at London City on BA domestic flights they will even find your luggage on the carousel for you.

We reviewed the service here if you want to know more about it.

Until 31st March, Airportr will transport your winter sports equipment for free when you pay for at least one suitcase to be collected.  Given that ski and snowboard equipment is even less fun to carry around than suitcases, this is well worth a look.  Details can be found on the Airportr site here.

British Airways refusing to budge on checked through bags

Late last year, all of the oneworld alliance members were told that they could, if they wished, now refuse to check through bags between oneworld airlines when the passenger was travelling on a separate ticket.

In plain English, this means that if you were flying British Airways to Doha and then connecting to a Qatar Airways flight to Delhi – booked on a separate ticket – BA would refuse to check your bags through to Delhi.

British Airways jumped on the opportunity to do his because it is a money saver – they are no longer liable to compensate you if your bags fail to connect.  They really pushed the boat out, however, by also refusing to check through baggage between two British Airways flights on separate tickets.

This is astonishingly inconvenient.  In the Doha example above, the passenger now needs to collect their baggage in Doha, clear immigration in Doha – which includes paying for a Qatari Visa, go the Qatar check-in desks (luckily Doha is a one-terminal airport) and then clear security again.  Some people have found themselves separated from their luggage because they did not have the necessary visa to go landside in order to re-check their bags.

Cathay Pacific made the same changes as BA.  However, within a few weeks, they backtracked under substantial pressure from passengers.  You can now check through a bag on two Cathay Pacific flights when booked on separate tickets.

BA will not budge.  If you thought it would, you should know that travel agents are receiving a continual bombardment of emails from the airline – two in the last week alone – reminding them not to do this.

Here is typical example from last week (the bolding was in the original):

“It is important that you never advise customers that the airports may be able to through check-in when they have tickets issued on separate bookings, as the airport teams are unable to assist resulting in frustration for the customer at check-in.

In addition to not being eligible for through check-in, customers travelling on separate tickets issued on different PNR’s will need to collect their bags at the transit point and re-check in, their baggage allowance and lounge access may differ depending on the fare paid for each sector and Conditions of carriage guidelines only apply for the disrupted sector and not on any separate connection.”

Charming.  It saves a few quid though, so …..

  • Anna says:

I’m flying to GCM via Man on separate bookings in August. The luggage isn’t an issue on the way out as we’re staying overnight at Heathrow, but on the way back we only have 2 hours between flights which will make it very tight if we have to collect the bags and re-check them. I called BA a couple of weeks ago and pointed this out. The customer service rep said to just tell the ground staff at GCM to check them right through to Manchester. They range from very laid back to extremely bureaucratic there so I don’t know whether they will happily do this or I will end my holiday having a stand off with them and possibly missing my connecting flight!

If you don’t get your luggage, or you miss a connecting flight, will BA still deliver your bags for free and/or let you get on a later flight for free? I can’t seem to find an answer to either of these.

  • James Ward says:

“…clear immigration in Doha – which includes paying for a Qatari Visa…”

Are you sure there’s a fee for this? Twice last year I transited through Doho on my way to a Australia and took advantage of the free hotel provided by the airline for long layovers. Neither time was I charged for entry into the country.

    • Andrew says:

QR pay the visa fee in your circumstances. Otherwise you pay yourself.

      • James Ward says:

I hadn’t realised the visa fee was paid by the airline but you’re right. The confirmation from QR states “You will require an Instant Transit Visa which will be sponsored by the airline.”

    • Rob says:

I have paid for a Qatar visa. I think since then the rules have changed and if you apply in advance you don’t pay – but in this scenario most people would not have applied in advance.

  • Czechoslovakia says:

I’ve had SAS (*A) transfer my suitcases over to CSA (skyteam) before now, on separate KLM issued tickets. KLM coughed up for a replacement due to damage. Such a shame BA doesn’t want to be bothered even on it’s own connections. Actually, it’s pathetic. At least offer the customer to do it with signing a disclaimer?

  • Robbie says:

Do Qatar still check through on seperate tickets? I am flying back from Dubai with Qatar (via Doha both legs on Qatar) and have booked the flights on seperate PNRs (As they were Avios redemptions and I couldn’t get them to come up on BA as one trip) Obviously I don’t fancy having to pay to enter Qatar and recheck bags (I have enough time but I just don’t want to :-p )

    • Mark1980 says:

Exactly the same here so I’d be interested to know too

      • Axel Heyst says:

Same here! Although arriving on EY leaving on QR. Thinking it may be best to restrict myself to hand luggage now

    • James Ward says:

+1 for this question. I’m travelling back from AKL-DOH-CAI on one ticket (QR) and CAI-LHR on a separate PNR (with BA). Hoping that Qatar will check the bags right through.

  • Harry Holden says:

Could this also be about J class benefits? Book a J class s/h to LHR onto one or more Y class l/h and get lounge access along the way.

Now, lounge access is at the European outstation only. Lounges less busy so consumption down, no fast track to pay for. More money saved. What a swizz thinks Alex.

  • Clare says:

Pop question – being aware of this issue and being about to fly DOH-LHR via CPH, I booked both parts of my Avios redemption on the one ticket . This increased the taxes by 25%. WHY given the ticket started in Doha? I coughed up becuase it’s a short connection, but it seems illogical to me given that none of the sectors started in the UK. Any thoughts?

  • sam says:

i have multi ticket avios flights to south africa and back in first. very tight turnover time in LHR on way back. will they allow first passengers to book bags through? may need to book later flight. if we miss connection are BA sympathetic? both arw BA flights but last one was paid in cash as cheap. thx

    • Rob says:

No they won’t. Only hope is that the check-in staff in SA, who are unlikely to be BA employees, do it as a favour.

  • Jamie says:

This, along with the ‘show me the bleeping money’ presentation, more than anything, is why I haven’t given BA a penny of cash since last August – except reward Avios fees. And since Buy On Board, I’ve been quite happily pilfering champagne from the Flounge into my coffee mug to bring on board. I just hope BA’s current management culture has not affected maintenance and safety regimes. If Si, a couple of accidents will see BA under. Hopefully a tipping point will be realised well before then. Is that tipping point now, was it sux months ago, or is it still to come? That is the question.
