News in brief:

Get money off Addison Lee rides

In response to heavy competition from Uber, Gett and Hailo, Addison Lee launched a new app in summer last year.

If you didn’t get around to trying the app yet, you can get some money off by downloading it now.

There are currently two sign up codes that will give you money off your first Addison Lee rides.

  • £10 off first ride – enter code HELLO10
  • £20 off 4 bookings (4 x£5) – enter code HELLO20

It’s up to you which code you use. Unfortunately you cannot use both and you need to choose when signing up.

You can download the Addison Lee app via this page here if you are reading this on your mobile or tablet.

Win Qatar Airways flight tickets

Qatar Airways has launched a competition giving you the chance to win 2 x Qatar Airways return economy flights from London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham or Edinburgh to any destination on the Qatar Airways network.

The second place winner gets 50,000 bonus Qmiles and the three winners sharing the third place will each receive an A350 model Qatar Airways plane.

You need to play a little game on this page of the Qatar Airways website in order to enter. In this game you need allocate seats to passengers by listening to their needs. Once you’ve done this you can get a further entry by forwarding the game to friends.

Economy tickets aren’t as exciting as a pair of Business Class seats, but as you can choose any destination served by Qatar you won’t have any problem finding somewhere to go.

Closing date is 24th March and you can only enter once per person.

Hi all, my message is off topic but I’ve been meaning to ask:

I notice that Amex has a offer on home wine tasting:

    PIEROTH HOME WINE TASTING
Spend £99 or more, get £70 back

Has anybody had any experience? I’ve been thinking of sorting it for a birthday present but have seen some (old) bad reviews.

    🙂

    • RussellH says:

We took up a free tasting from Pieroth around ten years ago.

It was nothing to write home about and TBH our main reaction afterwards was sympathy for the poor guy who had to drive out into the middle of the country to see a couple who really had no interest in buying his stuff.

    • Pid says:

Just booked one as thought for 30 quid not much to loose. Not confirmed date yet but can report back!

  • rams1981 says:

OT Amex referral – as previously mentioned my wife’s referral of gold card to platinum to me didn’t seem to go through properly so she didn’t get the 9k referral points and I didn’t get the 35k bonus points for spend and instead received 30k. A quick email from me to the customer services led to them confirming I did not go through the link (which I definitely did) but they credited the extra 5k as a gesture of goodwill.

My wife (well I) emailed customer service about the 9k referral points. They said there was no record but could offer 5k once they saw I had indeed recently opened a platinum account. I replied to say that’s if they could offer more as it seems to be a known IT issue with Amex and they offered 6k. May as well take it right?

  • Andrew H says:

O/T question. Do you earn HHonors points on reward stays booked a) only with points b) points and cash?

    • Genghis says:

      No and no

      • Andrew H says:

Thanks. Thought this was the case but wanted to be sure. They do count towards status though?

        • Genghis says:

They count as a night/stay but obviously do not count towards any ‘spend’ for status. Same as reward night certificates. But no points earned.

          • Genghis says:

Actually – I might be giving misinformation on the reward night certificates. Ignore me.

          • Alan says:

No, you were correct. Hilton VISA free night certificates are the same as points redemptions – you get your usual Diamond 1,000 pt bonus (if you’ve got status), stay/night credit, then only points on incidentals (as per relevant rules for that chain).

Where you might be confused is re Be My Guest certificates, given for poor customer service. These DO earn points (as well as stay credit).

      • Andrew H says:

What about free night certificates? No points earned?

    • RussellH says:

You should get points on incidentals at Hilton, though not at Hampton. Not on the cash part of the room charge though.

  • Andrew H says:

O/T again. Anyone got their Groupon avios yet?

  • Ian says:

No such discount applied by that Airparks link – the prices quoted are same, whether I use the link provided above or (using a different computer to avoid potential cookie issues) any other computer.

    False advertising. Be aware.

    • AmandaB says:

Totally agree. There is no way to get any discounts or cheaper Heathrow parking ever. It is always a con. Book via BA.com and at least get some additional Avios.

      • Rob says:

Actually, there is a new way to get massive discounts on the official in-terminal Heathrow car parks which almost no-one knows about. We’re covering it in a few days.

        • Ian says:

Not everyone uses LHR Rob. Another airports are available. The deal advertised (for most UK airports) is false. If you know it to be false advertising, why do you allow it to be posted / indeed remain?

        • Roger says:

Rob, was going to book parking for may half term holiday from LHR.
Shall I just wait until you have your new deal out?
Hope it is not good to go parking!

          • Rob says:

Yeah, that’s the one 🙂 Book the official car parks, pay less.

Amusingly Heathrow got wind of it and is trying to get me to can the article in its current form.

          • Roger says:

I have used good to go on a number of occasions. It easily beats official LHR parking by anything between 10 to 20%.

      • Barry cutters says:

        There is a way 🙂

        • the real harry1 says:

Cutters – I have to say I don’t envy you with your name @ school, I guess you got used to it

  • the real harry1 says:

1000 easy Tesco points (= 2400 Avios) on Shopper Points today (if you need the toys!) http://www.shopperpoints.co.uk/2017/02/22/1000-clubcard-points-nerf-my-little-pony-play-doh-and-hasbro-gaming

    • Rob says:

Thanks. Hey, let’s win 2 economy tickets for a 14 hour flight …..!

      • the real harry1 says:

        I think we should 🙂

        • the real harry1 says:

But are you missing the possible point? – it looks like a new Wine club with 1000 points & the opening deal = decent wine @ a decent price, so should be open to all – esp if you use a new email address

          • the real harry1 says:

So Merlot & Friends is under £54 with free delivery = £4.50/ bottle

You get 1000 Avios = £10 off = £3.67/ bottle, the wines look better than the usual cheap plonk

You get you competition entry on top

tbh perhaps the more expensive options are better value, worth thinking about depending on what you like
