British Airways makes Club Europe meal improvements following feedback

It is only a couple of weeks since British Airways brought in its new Club Europe catering.  The first genuine improvements to the original offering are already live, having been rushed through with impressive speed.

Unfortunately the two biggest problems with the relaunch – the removal of hot meals from a lot of key routes and the removal of fruit from breakfast – have not been addressed (yet?).

This is a shame as there were some positive changes made, primarily to the longest Club Europe routes.  Almost all flights irrespective of length now get a choice of food where there was previously nothing.

Unfortunately, drastically reducing the meal quality on a small but important selection of routes has wiped out any goodwill that may have been generated.  These include Barcelona, Bologna, Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Innsbruck, Milan, Nice, Oslo, Palma, Pisa, Porto, Prague, Salzburg, Venice, Vienna, Verona and Zagreb.

Anyway, this is what appears to have changed as of last Thursday:

  • Fruit plates have been added to ‘brunch’ options
  • The salad has got a little bigger and cheese and biscuits have been added
  • The panini has gained a side salad

Things are picking up a little although there is still a long way to go before we can genuinely say that Club Europe food has improved without needing to add a list of caveats.

    Hmm.

    I had the exact meal on the way back from Hamburg this week. That poor prawn looked *lonely*. Saying that on the Monday, I had the Beef Chibatta… with the option of more bread if I wanted it.

    And can we please discuss the battery acid they’re serving in C now? It makes me ponder if I’m going to waste some Avios on Monopole…

    I’ll be posting my thoughts in the next couple of days. Suffice to say, I’m glad I ate in the lounge both ways.

      When they were switching from Monopole to Castelnau in Club Europe I happened to be on a flight that had both and so I had the opportunity to try them at the same time. I found the Castelnau to be marginally better but neither that good.

        The Castelnau is like paint stripper. The Castelnau rose, however, is rather drinkable.

    If i compare with MH short haul business class , BA has a much better product , with a business in Jakarta , i use MH pretty frequently , if i am not in need of Tier Points i now book economy , Service is terrible , food pretty awful and no wine or beer etc on flights under 3 hours , the only decent part is the seat , but the cleaning leaves a lot to be desired , Economy at normally £60 one way provides decent value for money.

      MH regional service has been stripped to the bare minimum. Given that MH are back in profit i think they will start to improve service, but they have a long way to go. Cabin crew are being worked to the max hours. On a recent flight with MH from check in all they way through to arrivals they felt like a LCC operating without the innovation and options provided by Air Asia, who offer a far better experience.

        Having just flown 8 sectors with MH in business I second this. Food was often inedible and very dirty aircraft.

        Lounges are really poor.

    Looks pretty good. The meal on my most recent shorthaul business class flight could only be described as slop! I was compelled to take photos it was that bad. Their blueberry juice was delightful though. The carrier concerned? Finnair!

    O:T, sorry. Flying at the back with BA LHR-HEL in a couple of weeks. Is it classed as short haul meaning no free G&T?

    OT (sorry!) but very much BA and food related as there’s an article in the Sunday Times today about an interview with Alex Cruz which included:

    – BoB possibly being extended to long haul economy; and
    – Amuse bouche in 1st returning as are flowers in toilets

    The article then ended with this:

    Cruz gave BA’s overall customer experience 8/10. “But in two years’ time it will be 10/10,” he said adding that the airline would regain its title as “the best in Britain and the best in Europe”.

    If it’s already 8/10 then maybe long haul economy BoB will make it 10/10 and Cruz will stop enhancing after that??

        If they implement this the way they did BoB for short-haul when it comes to existing bookings I expect there will be a lot more Harrys taking them to SCC!

          If they do, I reckon it will be like Monarch’s system where you add the cost of an unspecified meal to the booking. Wonder how many mistakes they will make or have people not get any food because they didn’t order in time.

      Perhaps Cruz could go on Undercover Boss and then after that provide an accurate review of the product, better still try another airline. BA are a 6, maybe a 7 with a good cabin crew.

      BoB on long haul is an interesting prospect as a lot of people will bring their own food, who will eat it when they choose which could then disrupt the cabin when trying to get some sleep.

      This comment on the ST article is a classic “overheard in Waitrose”…

      “When I read so many negative comments below it makes my glad I bought my own executive jet some years ago. I have my own cabin crew lady and two excellent pilots. It’s a Cessna Citation and has a range of over 3,000 miles so crossing the Atlantic is well within its capacity.

      I’m thinking of upgrading to a Lear Jet.

      Initially, it was quite expensive but when I’m not using it I lease it out and recover some of the costs.

      If you are considering going down the same route I highly recommend it”

    That’s not good, if people are spending £20+ for snacks and drinks on a 2 hour flight, the outlay for a 12 hour flight will be horrendous! You’d need a hamper…

      When I did Y on Air Lingua to JFK a few years ago, I took a wee packed picnic, salad, cheese, meats, etc. It was only because of the goodwill of a US immigration official that he let me board the plane with them under the strict condition that I would definitely be eating it all onboard. He’d obviously took a look at my frame and decided I’d have no probs packing it away…

        Will be interesting to see how VS respond when BA implement BoB on Y.

        Sure they’ll be torn;
        1) wanting to offer something more distinctive than BA
        2) but mindful of the potential cost savings.

    … and with LH BOB will come paid baggage too. The rumour I heard is that at that point it will go Wizz-style, so only ‘yellow tagged’ bags will be free, any bigger bags for the lockers will become paid, in recognition of the fact there’s no locker space as it is, never mind with more.

    Then the only ‘free’ thing left will be IFE… but for how long?!
