New Avios-earning Qatar Airways sale deals launched

Qatar Airways has kicked off another round of business class deals.

These are NOT as exciting as we saw back in January.  There is also a very tight travel window – you must fly before 21st June 2017.

You have a week to book – these deals end on 3rd May.

Full details of the – not very good – UK deals can be found here.

Qatar Travel Festival

The best fares will not be found from the UK, however, as you can see from the examples below.

Here are a few of the better headline prices.  These deals are all for business class travel via Doha.

These prices EXCLUDE the additional discount for using the promo code MASTERCARD when booking.  This discount does not appear to work for every flight – in many cases it only seems to work where Business Saver rather than Business Promo is selected.

These prices are NOT the full list of discounts – they are just random examples I picked out last night.  You can use the country links below to check out prices from other popular starting points.  Stockholm seems to have the best deals.

Stockholm to Dubai – £914

Stockholm to Cape Town – £1,478

Stockholm to Bali – £1,411

Stockholm to Singapore – £1,273

Helsinki to Krabi – £1,204

Helsinki to Bangkok – £1,213

Brussels to Johannesburg – £1,493

Copenhagen to Auckland – £2,345

Oslo to Colombo – £1,246

Oslo to Seychelles – £1,427

Sofia to Delhi – £1,320

Sofia to Beijing – £1,570

The longer routes would earn 560 British Airways Executive Club tier points return (140 + 140 + 140 + 140) due to the change of plane in Doha.  Auckland is 600 tier points.  560 points is more than 90% of what you need for a BA Silver card.  Delhi is 140 + 40 + 40 + 140.  Dubai is 140 + 60 + 60 + 140 as the connection books into First Class on a two class plane.  Remember, though, that you still need to have taken 4 British Airways flights for cash in your current tier point year before you will be upgraded.

How to pick a departure city

It isn’t all about the long-haul flight price.  You need to add in the cost of getting to your starting point.

More importantly, you need to build in contingency.  You need to arrive early enough to ensure that you won’t miss your connection if your inbound flight is late.  If that means staying overnight, you need to factor in the cost of a hotel.  You may also want to pick an airport with a hotel on the airport to avoid messing about with shuttle buses.

Remember that BA will no longer tag through bags to connecting flights when they are on separate tickets.  If you are checking in a case, you will need to fly London to, say, Stockholm, wait for your case, clear immigration, go to Departures, check in your case and clear security again.  This will take some time.

As ever with Qatar, you should keep an eye on the aircraft.  The most modern seats are on the Boeing 787, Airbus A350 and Airbus A380 fleet.  I think that the full A330 fleet has been refitted now too.  The newer planes have a 1-2-1 herringbone layout where passengers faces away from each other.

The Boeing 777 aircraft are fully flat but have a different 2 x 2 x 2 layout.  Qatar also uses short-haul planes on some European routes but these are configured with ‘proper’ business class seats.

Here are my Qatar Airways seat and lounge reviews – you will see that I am very positive about them:

If you’ve got any travel plans for the next two months, it is worth popping over to the Qatar Airways website and seeing if there is anything interesting.

FYI, I flew FCO-DOH last week on an A330 and it was a very old configuration, similar to that of QR’s A340-600. Bloody awful, hope ghis helps

    • TT says:

I flew DOH CMB on a A340-600 and it was absolutely fine for a five hr flight. if you think it is bad, have a peekaboo passed the curtain into the Y cabin, and you will find the J seat to be ABSOLUTELY fine……..

  • the real harry1 says:

Flying before 17th June is a very tight requirement

    • Polly says:

Krabi about the best value this time around. Agree, too short notice. Don’t think they will fill the planes as much as they think they will this time round. Scandis love their summers in scandi…
Reckon an Autumn sale worth waiting for, would be looking at paying c900 Max ex EU to Asia in these sales. So the waiting begins…..
A330 ok for a day flight, but not overnight. QR getting away with using them on day/evening ex EU legs as they know folks ie. Scandis need to get to Doha somehow.

  • Sarahuk says:

How long do MR reward points from a sign on bonus usually take to hit the account?

  • Jovanna says:

Norwegian are a good option for positioning flights. Checked baggage is about £15 extra but has seat selection. We used the No. 1 Lounge at Gatwick and then the Grain Store for an onboard snack, with our Priority Pass.

Used the Clarion at CPH last week for an overnight stop. Booked this when it was a Hilton. We were given a voucher for breakfast, upgraded to a room on one of the higher floors and water / robes were provided – so they honoured my HH Diamond status. Quite happy with the hotel and connected to the terminal.

No pre-departure champagne ex-CPH with QR and not sure whether the BRICS amenity kit is an improvement over the Armani one. It seems to be a whole lot of case but with little substance. The a la carte menu has gone from the Al Mourjan lounge, since we last visited in October. The buffet options were pretty poor. The lounge was very quiet but we still had a 20 minute wait for the showers. The attendant was very ‘dedicated’ and gave me a 5 minute tour of the shower room… However, the experience still knocks the socks off BA.

    • Leo says:

Norwegian can be unreliable for times so make sure you did what you did and go the night before to make sure you don’t miss your main flight.

      • Jovanna says:

Having left my briefcase – containing passport, iPad, wallet, cash, credit cards etc. – on a Southern Rail service at Gatwick, I was very thankful for a 50 minute delay with Norwegian. Having bolted up to Victoria to collect my belongings, I was just passing through security about the time my flight was scheduled to depart. Serendipity?

    • AndyR says:

We got pre departure champagne exCPH a few months ago.

Agree food at the Al Mourjan is pretty rubbishm. Better to eat onboard.

20 mins wait ain’t too bad. I’ve waited over an hour. All that space and they didnt put enough showers in.

Not that keen on Al Mourjan in general. Will always try to book as short transit as poss from now on.

  • Nick says:

Seen arn to dxb for £894 for ages right through until October but I’m waiting on a better price.

On the subject of Amex MR post quickly the same can’t be said of pro rata refunds. Yesterday was 3 weeks since I cancelled and still no refund. After being told give it another 3-5 days crap I’ve opted for a transfer credit to my BA Amex as it “makes it easier”. I bet….. word of warning people Amex are being very dodgy with the refunds. The other option yesterday of course was setting up a new refund as the other somehow didn’t work but I was told realistically be 2 weeks at least before it hits my bank.

    • mark2 says:

I always make sure that I owe more than the refund when I cancel (and change back to paper statements).

      • the real harry1 says:

        good tip 🙂

I fell into asking for the spurious extra unwanted (3rd card) supp trap when upgrading to Plat – but just fixed it with a 5 min call

they don’t make that bit very clear during the application process, I’d read it here before as well but was not on my guard enough

        • Klaus-Peter Dudas says:

What is this 3rd card thing?

          • Genghis says:

If you already have a supp on the gold and go through the upgrade to plat application, it asks you to enter supp info. But this is “new supp” info. So then the main card holder and 2 x supp plat cards are delivered. It’s a bit confusing and Amex could make it much more clear.

    • Simon says:

I’m now due a £412.50 refund… I am just going to partially pay the balance and leave this amount owing. They can worry about offsetting it then. Or am I at risk of not paying off the full balance and getting blackmarked if it goes beyond the balance due date ???

      • Genghis says:

I don’t fully understand the question. Have you cancelled with the refund gone to your acct?Come the payment due date, you need to have paid the balance on the statement, either through paying by DD, debit card etc or partially (or in full) by a fee pro rata refund.

        • Simon says:

We cancelled today. balance due by 7th May is 2600 quid. should I pay that full amount by debit card now or only £2187.50 and hope the refund hits the account before 7th May to reduce the balance to zero?? If I pay the full 2600 on my debit card now, I will be chasing Amex for the refund to be paid to me will I not ?

          • Genghis says:

Don’t pay anything now. The pro rata refund will hit your account overnight. You can then clear the balance tomorrow by debit card / wait until the DD date and a revised DD amount should go through taking balance to zero.

          • Simon says:

Will do that. Been thrown by the stories of never appearing refunds from earlier threads…..

          • Genghis says:

From my experience the credit to the account always appears the day after cancellation but I’ve had problems getting actual cash from a credit balance before

          • Rob says:

I cancelled 2 SPG cards last month and the pro-rata fee refund was showing online within a few days. An email via Secure Message Centre got the balance transferred other Amex cards as a credit.

          • Polly says:

We got our cheques in the post within two weeks when we cancelled plat last time..

  • John says:

It’s worth to mention that QR flights are not “eligible flights ” so you still need ex. 4 flights with BA or ibieria to get your silver status even if you earned your tier points from QR flights

    • the balf says:

Thanks for that – hadn’t realised.
Does that apply for Silver to Gold as well? I have a few hundred tiers pts to get gold and considering a trip like above to get status.

      • Rob says:

Yes, still need 4 cash BA flights

      • TGLoyalty says:

AFAIK If you have 4 flights already then you don’t need 4 more to go from Silver to Gold just the tier points

    • Radiata says:

This includes BA franchises such as Comair in South Africa.

  • Andrew says:

Worth mentioning that on the return leg QR will through-check your luggage and issue boarding passes if connecting to another OW flight. If your connecting in Stokholm to a BA flight to London you’ll need to change terminals and I was advised to do this on foot (going through security again) otherwise I’d be left in a transit pen with “no coffee” for hours if I used the air-side terminal shuttle.

  • Neil says:

O/T – Does anyone know what days of the week the QF direct flight from London – Perth is in March 2018? I’m looking to book tickets today if possible

    • Peter K says:

Why not Google it or look on their website or try skyscanner.net and put in the details and ask for only direct flights to find out.

    • travelbear38 says:

Seats for the qf service to perth on sale now.
No avios seats seem to be loaded yet.

    • Louie says:

Daily flights from 25 March according to the Qantas email I received earlier.

      • Neil says:

Cheers everyone! I managed to purchase two tickets today after the QF news letter landed in my inbox. Flights start on the 25th of March and BA has no Avios flights but QF has plenty of availability

    • Gomigo says:

LHR to PER cash ticket is up for sale this morning. Ticket starts just over £1300 which is twice the price of Cathy Pacific on same segment with a change at HKG. The price is expected to hit £900 during sale period. No award ticket is loaded in BA or any one world partners. First flight is from LHR to PER segment leaving London at 13:55 and arriving into Perth next day 13:35. It is 15:45 hrs flight towards east. Plenty of availability on QF site and 787-9 is operated on this segment. Award ticket is expected to be usual 50000 avios with couple of hundred pounds from London and few ten pounds from Perth.
