I wrote a piece yesterday about the new ‘points pooling’ feature with Hilton Honors.  Today I want to focus on the new Hilton Summer promotion – which offers double or triple base points – which has just opened for registration.

To give Hilton credit, it is very straightforward with minimal small print:

You will earn DOUBLE Hilton Honors base points for every stay between 1st May and 31st August.  Diamond members will receive TRIPLE base points.

You can register here.

Hilton_Honors_Logo_K

There is no small print except that you need to register in advance via the Hilton website:

There is no minimum stay requirement

Existing bookings still count

All Hilton Family properties (Hilton, Hampton, Curio, Waldorf-Astoria, Conrad etc) are taking part – there is no list of non-participating hotels – except for Hampton properties in China

You can earn the bonus on two rooms per night, as long as both rooms are booked in your name and the bills are merged together (this is important) so that you only pay one bill.

The full rules for the promotion can be read here.

Should you get a Diamond status match for triple points?

If you have top tier status with another hotel programme, Hilton Honors will give you a 90 day free trial of Hilton Diamond status.

You need to supply a screenshot showing your top tier status in another programme plus a screenshot showing a paid stay in the previous 12 months.

Gold status matches are also available if you have mid-tier status with another scheme.

If you complete eight stays (note it is stays, not nights) during the 90 days you will keep your Diamond status until 31st March 2019.  If you only manage four stays you will receive Gold status until 31st March 2019.

Even if you only had a couple of Hilton stays planned this Summer, you might want to request a Diamond match.  You would ensure Diamond benefits on those stays and you would receive triple points instead of double points.

The downside is that you may lock yourself out of a future Hilton Diamond match.  If the hotels you are visiting are unlikely to give you much for your Diamond status (ie they have no lounge so you don’t get anything from the ‘guaranteed lounge access’ benefit) you may want to hold back.  You may get a better deal by taking the Diamond status match later, assuming Hilton continues to offer it.  You need to make your own call here.

Conclusion

‘Double or triple base points’ is a decent offer and you should make sure you register here if you have any Hilton stays coming up over the next three months.

Whether you move your business to Hilton may depend on your new IHG Accelerate target – see my other article today for details on that.

I find Hiltons expensive in comparison to IHG hotels but the benefits of top tier status especially if staying at a hotel with a lounge outweigh the cost saving of staying elsewhere. A few recent stats at the Hilton in Liverpool where the cost was £99 in comparison to £80 at Holiday Inn where you still had breakfast and any evening drinks to pay for made the Hilton better value with lounge access and free breakfast.

    • James A says:

OT but Hilton related. Asked Hilton for a status match and used Marriott gold status (matched from SPG). Was matched to Hilton Diamond, interestingly. I understand using SPG gold results in a gold match.

(I say match but I mean match + challenge, of course)

      • Rob says:

You need 50 nights for Marriott Gold which might be why – very hard to earn it.

        • James A says:

But 60 nights for Hilton diamond! Interesting for those with SPG gold anyway.

  • Alid says:

Off on honeymoon to Rangali next week!
    Triple points will do nicely!

    • TripRep says:

Nice one, hope my reviews prove useful. Have a great time, if you get to the manager’s reception, say Hi to Bobby and Alex from me.. 🙂

      • AliD says:

Your reviews have been great – thanks.
Will look out for Bobby and Alex.

Seem to be going round in circles here. Using Rob’s links or going direct to Hilton I can see the offer and terms and conditions but can’t see anywhere to sign up for double points. The T&Cs direct me to HiltonHonors.com/BonusPromotion but it keeps asking me to book a room. Use Hilton a lot but not planning anything at the moment. Just want to sign up for offer as have 6 night stay coming up in London in May so keen to double up on points. Any assistance appreciated.

    • Genghis says:

When I did it yesterday, when I clicked the link then logged in, it registered automatically by saying as such. I didn’t have to click anything else. I then took my screen prints as evidence.

      • totaltool says:

I can now see that when you go to a new booking it comes up in the room rates including 2x points but I can’t seem to find a way to ensure that existing bookings are included. Hilton have had my booking (and money!) for 6 months so will be well peeved if I miss out on what will be quite a few extra points!!

  • graham says:

OT – does anyone know how to find out the spend needed on lloyds avios to get to the upgrade voucher? I don’t know when the new collection year starts (account or calendar) and can’t see anywhere that states your spend to date towards the voucher?

    • Grimz says:

You need to check your statements. It’s a pain in the a**

I would take your yearly date from tha as well.

    • Alan says:

Yep we’ve been telling Lloyds this for years but they’ve never bothered sorting. Best way is to manually calculate it by going through your statements – otherwise you can spend hours on the phone being passed between pillar and post (and often to Avios.com!) when trying to ask them to do it.

  • Adrian says:

Guys, I’m off to Hong Kong later in the year for the first time, I have Hilton gold and IHG Spire Ambassador, are there any hotels that you would recommend from these groups, especially that I can get value out of e.g. they are good with upgrades or lounge access/perfect location etc? Any help would be appreciated.

    • Rob says:

My review of the IC HK should run tomorrow although I’m not sure it will help your decision much.

    • Genghis says:

We stayed at the Conrad in Sep for 3 nights using 1 barclaycard night and 2 cash. I’m Diamond. Got upgrade to harbour view suite from the bog standard room. Great lounge. Great staff. Top banana.

  • mark2 says:

    A bit OT
I often get invitations to stay for two nights at Hilton London Metropole Hotel for £199 as long as I go to a timeshare presentation. Has anyone ever done this?
Reviews are mixed; would I get a decent room as a Diamond?
I expect to be asked to leave from the presentation when I point out the holes.

      • Mark says:

I got offered something like this but to Orlando, I was very tempted $700 for 7 nights, no blackout dates and no restrictions. When i said no a couple of times they added in 1 weeks universal pass for 2, 2 day passes to disney and some water park tickets (can’t remember which one). I was very very tempted but it only lasts for a year and we already have our holiday booked this year and we want to go orlando next may. I got 500 HH points for listening which was ok as the person was really nice and not pushy. I just wish i could have made the dates work.

    • TripRep says:

Dods the Metropole on come with 10k bonus points? (Like I mentioned in my stay that JamesB quoted)

      • JamesB says:

I recall at least one of the Metropole offers I got included 10k bonus points. I would use this but the offer always seems to come through at a time I cannot use it or don’t want to. There is also quite a lot of small print regarding eligibility (income, employment etc) and their right to charge full market rates for the stay if these are not met. I’ve no idea if they check such details but to be on safe side anybody interested should check these before taking advanyage of such offers,

  • JamesB says:

Am I cottect in thinking that since the recent changes to Honors we earn points on the cash element of points and money bookings? If so, does anybody know if points are being awarded on points and money bookings made before the changes came into effect or if those are still identified as nonqualifying? The issue is quite important because it might mean that in some circumstances it could be worthwhile cancelling old points and money booking an rebooking under the new rules, particularly with triple points for diamond.

    • John says:

It would almost never be worthwhile to do so because the old points and money gave you much better value, even after taking everything into consideration.

The old points and money was a redemption where you bought 60% of the points needed for the redemption at a very favourable rate. The new points and money is a flexible rate booking where you sell points to Hilton for a fixed discount.

    • Genghis says:

New P&M bookings earn points on the money element. I rebooked my Conrad Singapore stay as net net it was better value (taking into account points earned)

    • JamesB says:

Thanks guys, I will look at it closely. Only concerns my Prague stay as I changed my CPH stay to CP Towers and my Brussels stay to all points.

  • Scott says:

From my experience it would seem that Hilton do allow you to do a status match more than once. I took advantage of a previous status match (late 2015/early 2016) where they matched you straight to Diamond with no stays required (I matched my IHG Spire status). This was valid until end of March 2017. I didn’t really use Hilton much in 2016, but decided at the start of 2017 to move from IHG towards Hilton.

As expected my Diamond Status dropped at the end of March down to Silver (which I had earned at that point for this year on Stays/Nights). The following day I requested a status match under the current status match offer (I’m still an IHG Spire) and they matched me back to Diamond the next day. I have in April completed the 8 stays required for the match, on the day that the 8th stay posted to my account an email appeared confirming my status until March 2019.

I have to say that I do think that Hilton is better than IHG. I have been staying in a number of Doubletrees and think they are better than Holiday Inns and Hamptons are better than HIX. I have scored a load of points via the promos and have had good status recognition in the hotels. I have even scored upgrades to Suites on about 50% of my stays this year which is always nice.

    • Rob says:

They will do it more than once now, I agree. You can’t assume that they won’t change the rules in future though, and I wouldn’t want to unnecessarily count myself out.
