I receive occasional emails from readers asking ‘How can I stop my Hilton Honors points from expiring?’ or ‘When do my Hilton Honors points expire?’. This series, which we are updating this week, looks at the major hotel loyalty programmes and shows you how to keep valuable points intact.

If you need to refer to this article in the future, there is a link to it on our ‘Hotel Offers’ page in the Hilton Honors section. This also includes details of current Hilton Honors promotions.

About Hilton Honors

When do Hilton Honors points expire?

According to the Hilton Honors terms and conditions here:

To keep accumulated Hilton Honors Points, the Member must take one of the following actions within a 24 consecutive month period:

(a) stay at a hotel within the Hilton Portfolio pursuant to the terms herein;

(b) earn Hilton Honors Points through any third party source of Hilton Honors Point accumulation, including a Hilton co-branded credit card, pursuant to its terms;

(c) purchase Hilton Honors Points; or,

(d) donate Points through The Hilton Honors Giving Back Program.

Failure to take action (a), (b), (c) or (d) described above will result in the forfeiture of all accumulated Points and, after five years of inactivity, to deactivation of the Member’s account.

What are my options to ‘earn Hilton Honors Points through any third party source”?

The key point is that you do not need to stay at a hotel to keep your Hilton Honors points alive. You simply need to have some earning activity go through your account.

There are various ways of achieving this:

Earning Hilton Honors points:

Here are some options for anyone based in the UK:

When do your Hilton Honors points expire?

There is no longer a dedicated Hilton Honors credit card. However there are various ways of earning Hilton Honors points from other UK credit cards.  Many cards also have generous sign-up bonuses.

Click here to read our detailed summary of all UK credit cards which indirectly earn Hilton Honors points.

It is worth noting that you cannot earn Hilton Honors points simply by eating or drinking in a Hilton hotel without being a registered guest.

Spending Hilton Honors points:

Booking and cancelling a redemption room to create movement on your account does NOT count as activity under the terms above. Under the rules I quoted above there is only one spending option which keeps your points alive:

Transfer Hilton Honors points:

There is another alternative and one which I have used in the past.

You can transfer Hilton Honors points out of your account to someone else for FREE – the form is here (click on ‘Transfer Points’ at the bottom of the page).

If your points are about to expire, simply give them away to someone else.

Conclusion

It is slightly trickier to keep Hilton Honors points alive than with some other chains because you cannot simply book and immediately cancel a redemption night.  That said, preserving your points is still a relatively easy thing to do, especially if you have some American Express Membership Rewards points.

The best news is that you don’t need to do a hotel stay unnecessarily.  In the worst case scenario, spend $10 on buying 1,000 Hilton Honors points via this link – job done.

If the worst comes to the worst and your points are lost, Hilton Honors has been known to reinstate them if you call.  This will usually require you to make a number of stays over the next few months – the points are not put back without some activity on your part.

How to be notified of upcoming miles and points expiry dates

If you want to track the expiry dates of all of your miles and points, I recommend signing up to AwardWallet for free. It keeps all of your points balances, including non-travel loyalty schemes, in one place and updates them automatically.

If you pay for the premium version ($30 per year) it also tracks your all expiry dates and emails you when points are about to expire.  On the free plan, you can track the expiry date for three loyalty schemes of your choice.

  • Chris Cannon says:

Although this won’t apply to the vast majority of readers, being an HGVC owner means your points will never expire

  • Andy S says:

Still got an Hilton Honors Barclaycard which I plan to keep using until they decide to cancel it.

    • Simon C says:

Not sure about them cancelling it but they certainly seem to have forgotten to tell the Barclaycard customer service team that it still exists. Still waiting on October points to hit the HH account. Told to call Hilton. No, thanks. Do you mean a missing stay. No. Do you mean you’ve bought HH points. No. It’s like explaining the problem to assorted cats.

      • RussellH says:

You are entirely correct that the Barclaycard customer service team know nothing about this card. I have had numerous profuse apologies and received cash compensation for points not being credited. I have also strongly advised improved training, but that suggestion is clearly totally ignored. I have it in writing that all the information is available to the team in their system, but if they are never told that it is there…
My latest complaint has been about not getting the triple points due from a Hilton stay. Complained on chat last month and, amazingly, the correct number of points were credited at the beginning of this month, in spite of what it said on the statement.
Wrong again this month, but I just cannot be bothered to go through it all again for just 7 points.

  • C says:

Can I still earn Hilton points and use gold perks like free breakfast on flight + hotel bookings made with BA Holidays?

  • RussellH says:

Apart from the options above, you can still sign up for https://www.guestopinionrewards.co.uk to earn Hilton points. 1,250 Bonus Points when you complete your first survey.
Unlike Accor’s Club Opinions, you will get 10 points even if you do not “qualify” for a survey, so even just attempting a couple of surveys should be enough to protect your points.
Please note though that points are slow (very slow) to credit, unlike Accor points which I find usually credit in under 24 hours, so this is only really an option to use if you have at least a month to go.
But it is, I would have thought, well worth signing up in order to protect your points.

    • SBIre says:

Yep – agree with all of this! Both are very useful for keeping HH and ALL points, and those timelines are spot on

  • Colin_Thames says:

    Rob
You mention you can gift points to someone else. Does that count as activity on their account? And if so can they gift them back to keep your account alive?
(Seems like an obvious workaround for a couple so maybe too good, or simple, to be true!)

    • Rob says:

I suggest this isn’t a ‘third party source’ of earning points.

    • Ian says:

Hilton have closed accounts for dodgy transfers.

I wouldn’t chance it to be honest
