IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched a website for its Autumn 2017 promotion – IHG Accelerate. Yes, it is repeating the Autumn 2015, Spring and Summer and Autumn 2016 and Spring and Summer 2017 offer!

But that is not a bad thing.

To be honest, during the last 18 months IHG has been the only major hotel chain offering global promotions which offer genuine outsize value.  Everyone has their own personal target but, for most of us, the challenge is pretty straightforward.

IHG Rewards Club

Here are the headline details:

IHG Accelerate (Version 7) covers stays from 1st September to 31st December

All hotels are participating, including Kimpton Amsterdam (which was, despite what IHG told me, excluded from the Summer version of Accelerate)

Your bonus is personalised – you need to log in here to discover yours

This was my target for 48,100 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points for a stay in September
  • 2,000 points on my next stay
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 4,000 points for booking a two-night weekend stay
  • 2,500 points for two stays booked via my corporate rate (the company I haven’t worked for in 6 years!)
  • 6,600 points for booking a Bonus Points Package
  • 2,000 points for getting the IHG credit card
  • 5,000 points for renewing my Ambassador membership
  • 11,000 points for completing six of the seven targets above, excluding the September bonus

Getting the lot could be a little tricky, to be honest, given my Autumn plans.  However, the Accelerate one is basically free points as I was going to do that anyway.  I could get 13,600 points for a one-night stay in September on a Bonus Points Package rate, so it would make sense to fit that into my schedule if possible.   Let’s see how it goes.

My wife got this one for 43,000 points:

  • 3,000 points for a stay in September
  • 2,000 points on her next stay
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 3,200 points for two stays booked via the IHG app
  • 2,400 points for making a ‘points and cash’ redemption stay
  • 1,500 points for paying for a stay with her IHG credit card
  • 600 points for spending $60 on food and beverage
  • 20,300 points for completing five of the six targets above excluding the September bonus

This is an interesting one.  One cash stay in September, booked on the app with $60 spent on food and drink and the bill paid on the IHG credit card, would earn 9,500 points and tick off three of the five boxes needed for the final bonus.  It would then need either a 2nd app booked cash night or a ‘points and cash’ redemption to trigger the final chunk.

Note that if you have a target which involves meeting a certain ‘food and beverage’ spending target, this is EXCLUDING VAT for UK stays.  IHG also uses a weak exchange rate when converting your spend to US$.  If you were asked to acheive $39 of cumulative spend (£31), you actually need to spend £37 due to the 20% VAT and in reality probably need to do £40 due to the FX rate IHG uses.

A note on rebooking

Most of the time, existing bookings – ie bookings made before 1st September – made online do count for this promotion.

Last time, however, some people got an app booking target which DID specifically state that stays must be booked after the starting date.  If you have a ‘book stays via the app’ target then check the small print and be prepared to rebook.

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is highly likely to be the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Autumn.  And, with four months to hit your target, you have plenty of time to make the necessary stays.

Log in to the Accelerate website here, register and see what your target is.

    Mine is:

3000 September Bonus Offer. Stay once in September and get 3,000 bonus points
2,000 Stay Once, Get 2,000 bonus points
    5,000 Stay 3 Nights
    3,000 Stay 3 more nights
    3,000 Stay 3 more nights
    3,000 Stay 3 more nights
    3,000 Stay 3 more nights
15,000 Stay 3 more nights. Get an additional 15,000 bonus points after night 18.

I have a 2-night stay at the Palazzo in Las Vegas in October so I hope to get at least 2000 points. That’ll be it for me.

    • Alex W says:

Worth a v cheap 1 night stay in September to get you an extra 8000 points + base points?

      • Optimus Prime says:

        Extra 8000 points?

Do you mean that the way “Stay 3 nights” target works is that I just need 3 nights combined from different stays? Not a stay of 3 nights?

        • Genghis says:

Correct. So a cheap stay in Sep would trigger the Sep offer (3k) and the initial stay 3 nights offer (5k) over and above your current plans.

          • Optimus Prime says:

            Thank you!

Another question: if your other half has same targets, do they meet the goals by just adding their details and IHG number into your reservations? Or do they actually need their own separate bookings?

          • Genghis says:

@Optimus Prime. Is this even possible? You can add your OH’s name to a reservation but no box to add an IHG number.

          • Optimus Prime says:

@Genghis – True. Was wondering whether someone has managed to get the hotel staff to do it upon check-in.

  • Andrew says:

I’m assuming the same rule about app booking during the promo period would apply to a “redeem target” – so best to cancel a redemption stay and rebook after 1/09?

    • Genghis says:

My plan for this is that I have booked another stay on points for the nights I need. Then on 1 Sep cancel, it go back into inventory and I then rebook. If it doesn’t work I then still have my original booking.

  • Chris says:

My target is easy to reach, even if the bonus points are low compared to most. 3 nights at 3 different brands will do it for me. EXCEPT – I need to download the IHG app as the first requirement. As I already have the App on my phone I tried uninstalling it. However, my phone still has the download in memory which I reinstall. This does not trigger the download app criteria, so the offer is of no use to me.
    OR am I wrong????

    • john says:

on iPhone you can delete the data too:

Settings -> General -> Storage & iCloud Usage -> Manage Storage

Find the app in the list and click it then select Delete App.

  • Dan says:

“Get closer to the rewards you want when you stay 5 night(s) and earn 10,000 bonus points.
…Number of bonus points listed above will be awarded after the required number of qualifying room nights have been consumed by the member at any IHG brand hotels…”

I’ve booked 5 rooms for one night in the promo period (Mastercard rate) – would that trigger this bonus?!?

    • Dan says:

I thought I should add that it is the same night (group booking)! Obviously, five separate nights would definitely trigger it!

  • HayMow says:

I always wonder whether to register for the next Accelerate as soon as it comes out, or wait till nearer the start (if possible), in that presumably my next targets will be driven by my recent stay (or not) history. I wonder when IHG’s systems are set to trawl for recent behaviour and whether it’s a one-applies-to-everyone date this trawl takes place, or if it’s more dynamic than that.

That said, I’m very happy the qualifying period this time is 1st of month to end of 4 months later – it’s been a pain missing out when they started / ended Accelerates on the 15th of the month when some lose out a fair bit that way.

I think IHG systems are improving too – my current period Accelerate promo targets updated and transferred *much* quicker than in previous version. I always assumed they introduced the 15th of month dates as their systems / back office weren’t coping well with the original back to back date Accelerates, so the fact that this one starts 1 Sep (after the previous ends 31 Aug) is a positive sign for me … just hope I’m not proved wrong!

Now to decide whether to move any of my PointBreak bookings over to cash bookings! …

    • Alex says:

Yes, all these are valid points. However, my targets for Q4 are almost identical to Q3 but still it is better than offering me another Asia stay after I had just completed one (happened last year and was SO frustrating)

  • Peter K says:

Both my wife’s and my targets are much harder to hit and not achievable this time. The “outsized rewards” are becoming “medium sized rewards” compared to the spend required to achieve them.

  • Henry says:

Is anyone else having problems logging in to IHG? I haven’t been able to get in all week and it just says they are having problems with system.

    • Czechoslovakia says:

Just had the same message… Phone put a capital P at the start of my email address when logging in, and got the system message opposed to a logical login error message. Got your details right?

    • Simon says:

Requesting my pin solved this and allowed me to login.

  • Third Passport says:

    Mine aren’t too bad.

    • Simon says:

Snap! And identical to my summer target too. And I already have the app – will need to find another device to install it on.

    • Paul says:

My offer too ! Does it mean you have to wait until 1 Sept to download the app ?

      • Rob says:

Always better safe than sorry. I won’t be renewing my Ambassador until 1/9 even though I am already getting asked to do so.

        • Genghis says:

I got the points for renewing AMB in the current accelerate even though hadn’t yet renewed (but renewed afterwards anyway).
