HfP shortlisted for four major business travel awards

I’m pleased to announce that Head for Points has been shortlisted for four gongs at the Business Travel Journalism Awards.

These are the main annual UK awards for business travel writing, organised by Carlson Wagonlit Travel.  Sponsors this year include Lufthansa Group, Thistle / Guoman Hotels, Air Canada, United Airlines, Travelport, China Southern Airlines and Avis Budget.

BTJA

The four awards we are shortlisted for are:

Business Travel Editor of the Year (Rob)

Best Newcomer to Business Travel or Meetings and Events Journalism (Anika)

Best Digital Strategy

Scoop of the Year (Rob, for this British Airways story)

The winners will be announced at a dinner at the Natural History Museum on 5th October.

Win or lose, we are very happy to have been shortlisted.  It is a good way to end a 12-month period which has seen us move into a proper office and break 1 million monthly page views on a regular basis.

We are pleased that the panel of judges has been able to see that, behind the informal ‘first person’ format of Head for Points, we do – on a good day – put out articles which are on a par with traditional print business travel journalism.

Really, really well done to the pair of you. Enjoy the evening.

  • Down the Back says:

Well done Rob & Anika, could be the next Martin Lewis 🙂

PS. Where did the private jet article this morning go to, logged on, went to make a coffee and when I came back it had gone ??

    • Rob says:

It was not meant to run today – there was a placeholder in the system for today to remind me to write it. These get moved out of the way during the day, except that with the site down yesterday (and we couldn’t access the back-end even though the front-end was partially usable) I couldn’t move it.

I have just written it and it will appear tomorrow unless something big breaks this afternoon.

    • Mr Dee says:

I don’t consider Martin Lewis to be any sort of idol or expert and find most of his information is basic for the mainstream audience. I think Rob is better off being the expert of his area than being a Martin Lewis type.

      • Rob says:

I have a lot of time for Martin – he has never dumbed down and the site is written at a surprisingly high level given the mainstream audience it attracts.

        • Alan says:

Agree, also very good on R5 Live – although when it comes to points-related queries I find myself shouting the answers out when I’m listening, his specialist area is definitely more finance, as he himself admits!

          • the real harry1 says:

Martin is not very knowledgeable on compo though 🙂
            eg http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/life/852577/martin-lewis-mse-flight-compensation

sample: ‘If you flew to or from the UK and your airline is with an adjudicator, you MUST use it: You airline should let you know if they’re signed up with an ADR scheme, and if they are you can take your claim there to escalate it. Its decisions are generally binding on the airline (though not all are), and while generally most don’t charge a fee, be aware that CEDR – the regulator for British Airways, Easyjet, Thomas Cook and Thomson charge a £25 fee that’s only refunded if you win your case. Airline not signed up to an ADR? You’ll have to stick with a regulator’

you’d be better off reading the FT thread on compo

          • the real harry1 says:

for those wanting the quick answer: generally go straight to MCOL once BA have refused to give you your due compo & instead given you invalid excuses/ lies

        • Mr Dee says:

Agree, he is good for the mainstream audience and he does well to educate his audience as a stepping stone into making a difference with their money.

          • Down the Back says:

            Morning Guys,

It was only a light hearted comment, I wasn’t trying to promote Mr Lewis or his website, I was trying to draw a comparison (obviously poorly) , that as HFP readership grows and more people find Robs expertise re Travel and points collecting invaluable that Rob might one day sell the website for £87M and get £25M for himself as Mr Lewis allegedly did. I’ll shuffle off back to lurking mode now.

          • Rob says:

The most interesting thing about MSE is how little it sold for. There were 6m on the email list when it was sold so, even ignoring the entire online audience who don’t get the emails, that was only £15 per subscriber. HFP would only be worth £150k on that basis, which it clearly isn’t.

          • Mr Dee says:

I don’t mind Mr Lewis I just find the MSE general content to be too broad and rarely find anything useful on there these days, that said I think it is a very good site for internet and finance beginners.

I find much more value in specialist sites like this one where I have much more information about what I am interested in.

The MSE brand has a lot of value especially with their large user base but I think their average demographics and lifetime value of a customer will be a lot less than say HFP, which of course many will already know 🙂

  • David says:

Well done Rob and Anika, keep setting the standards for travel journalism.

  • Cate says:

Fabulous news and well deserved – well done team HfP!!!!

  • John says:

Well deserved for both of you, you do a fantastic job. I hope you win.

  • Mark LLL says:

Well done on being shortlisted for those travel awards.

And, sorry if this covered elsewhere and I have missed it, congratulations on your blog having passed the 10,000 email subscribers.

    • Rob says:

Thanks. We tend not to publicise that aspect because – in all honesty – I’d prefer people to visit the site which bumps up the page views which lets us charge more for the ads! I’m impressed that 10,000 people put up with 3 emails per day, but a lot do use them as ‘on the train’ early morning reading.

      • Mike says:

Rob – I do more than put up with them ! You are the only commercial entity that has my personal email address. I enjoy reading the three emails every day – Well done

  • AB says:

Well done both of you…. Hope you will win

  • 1nfrequent says:

Congratulations to you both. Glad to see you recognised for the hard work you put in.
