Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

New travel and High Street cashback deals launched for HSBC and First Direct customers

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Both HSBC and its subsidiary First Direct have jumped on the cashback statement credit bandwagon.  This is excellent news for readers who bank with either of these groups – which includes myself – as there is a good opportunity to save some money on your travel and general spending.

There is one particular difference between the First Direct / HSBC cashback offers and those offered by American Express.  You do not need to register for each individual offer with HSBC.  Once you are signed up to the cashback website, that’s it.  You will receive a statement credit regardless – you may even find yourself receiving money unexpectedly!

How to register

This is very simple.

You need to verify your email address and then submit your Visa card number from your credit or debit card.  That’s it.

Here are some sample offers

The offers appear the same for most people, with possibly some regional tailoring based on your address.

The following travel deals currently show for me:

10% back when you spend £75 at a UK Hilton (includes Hampton etc) – expires 28th September

£8 back on your first Uber ride – expires 22nd September (but this is worse than the Head for Points exclusive offer of £15 off your first ridedetails here)

10% back at Europcar – expires 21st September

12% back at Airport Hotels & Parking – expires 21st September

To be honest, these are not hugely generous.  However, some of the general High Street deals ARE good:

£5 back when you spend £40 at Esso – expires 28th September (remember that you earn Avios at Esso via Clubcard)

£10 back when you spend £40 at Lidl – expires 28th September

£5 back when you spend £30 at Boots – expires 28th September

£10 back when you spend £40 at H&M – expires 28th September

£3 back when you spend £8 at Costa – expires 28th September

…… amongst other deals.

Remember that HSBC has two attractive Avios earning credit cards exclusively for HSBC Premier customers.   Amusingly, though, these are both MasterCard products (the free HSBC Premier card is reviewed here, the £195 HSBC Premier World Elite card is reviewed here) and so don’t qualify for these offers!

I don’t see why you can’t use both the HFP and HSBC Uber deal at the same time. Uber only knows about the former, HSBC will just credit £8 for any old £8+ charge appearing under the Uber name.

Hopefully HSBC do better than Nationwide with this Visa scheme (it seems to be the same thing). They had some nice launch offers then quickly went down hill, but that could be because I don’t use the card much.

    • Marsha says:

Yes I agree. The HSBC/FD offer isn’t the same as HFP sign up credit.

You should sign up to the HFP offer and register your HSBC/FD card to the app. The HFP offer will be triggered and the HSBC/FD cash back will show when you are charged £8 to the app. In effect worth £23.

    • Alan says:

The Nationwide Uber deal clearly says it only works for new users – has anyone had success in using it as an existing customer?

  • Roger says:

If there is a paypoint attached to Esso store, can you use to pay bills etc and still get £5 back on £40 spend? I assume it should still work. will give it a go and find out unless others can confirm if they managed to use it successfully.

    • Genghis says:

Works for Co Op. Depends whether Paypoint go though the till as Esso, but don’t see why they wouldn’t.

  • Gareth says:

I did mention this about two weeks ago in the comments of another article!

  • Neil says:

I can’t see in the terms why this wouldn’t work on multiple cards so will give it a go!

  • Chris P says:

HFP is great! You’ve solved a query – looking at my HSBC current account yesterday I had a credit of 82p from VISA. No idea why – I still don’t know which transaction this related to nor do I ever remember signing up but as ever thanks to HFP I won’t worry about it nor return the 82p (Not!!)

  • Gavin says:

Do Lidl sell stamps? Got to get a bunch for wedding thank you cards?

  • Simon says:

I have the Santander account which currently gives 5% back on any apple or Android pay transactions. This means a £30 transaction limit most of the time but it adds up.
Only has two weeks left but plan to do daily small overpayment of council tax via paypoint.

    • John Thornstone says:

What’s the most you can pay via Android Pay at PayPoints and is there a daily cap?

    • Alan says:

Sadly no such offer on my 123 a/c – seems to be only on the 123 Lite? Had this only a couple of cards in Oz, was fantastic – used contactless all the time so was nice getting 5% back!

  • David says:

    “Amusingly, though….”

As a HSBC Premier World Elite card holder, I am not laughing….
