Review: the new InterContinental Ljubljana hotel in Slovenia

This is my review of the brand new InterContinental Ljubljana hotel in Slovenia.

First of all if you haven’t been to Ljubljana, you should put it on your list.

It’s fairly accessible with direct flights from most major capital cities in Europe.  The only issue for Londoners is that British Airways doesn’t fly to Ljubljana, so you have to get on an easyJet flight from Stansted or fly Wizz Air from Luton …..

On the other hand you can get flights for as low as £47 return (I checked a random week at the end of April with easyJet) – although my easyJet flight was £150 one way as I chose to fly on a Monday morning at relatively short notice.

As usual, Head for Points paid for my flights and airport transfer and the hotel gave me a room including breakfast for two nights. I brought my boyfriend along, who paid for his own flight ticket.

Ljubljana has, until now, been without a genuine luxury hotel.  The InterContinental has now filled that gap, and means that the city is well worth adding to your list if you want a short break with a touch of luxury.  If you want to find out more about the hotel, the website is here.

Where is InterContinental Ljubljana?

The InterContinental Ljubljana is located in the city center which is about a 30 minute drive from the airport.  I arranged with the hotel to be picked up at Arrivals and the flat fee was €40.

One great thing about Ljubljana is that you can walk everywhere. Even the castle which is located on a hill is only a 20-30 minute walk from the hotel. Most of the old town is for pedestrians only.

The hotel is brand new, only opening two months ago.  As you can see in the picture below there are floor to ceiling windows in all the guest rooms.

Check in

The reception is located between the entrance and the Bloom Lounge. I asked the PR team to send me the picture below as I didn’t get a great shot of this area myself and I loved the various materials used for the interior design of the lobby.

Check in was quick and efficient and whilst the receptionist sorted out our keys the concierge told us about the city and gave us a map of Ljubljana.

My room at InterContinental Ljubjana

We stayed in a Superior Room on the 17th floor with an amazing view over the Alps.

I was quite impressed by the size of the room.  As you came into the room the bathroom was to the left, to the right was a large wardrobe with a rail as well as several drawers and the safe.

Below is the view from the window. At the far back is the minibar with a capsule coffee machine.  One bottle of still and one bottle of sparkling water was complimentary and replenished daily.

Next to the minibar was a sofa and in the middle of the room was a great sized desk.  I know we keep going on about this, but the desks that many new hotels put into the rooms these days are more like bedside tables ….. if they are there at all.

The TV was attached to the wall and could be pulled out to watch TV from the bed. You can connect your laptop to the TV if you want to work on presentations and also stream content from your devices.

The interior designers took inspiration from the city itself as you can see in the artwork next to the TV as well as in the carpet design – which is actually a zoomed in image of the river in Ljubljana!

With floor to ceiling windows the room was light and bright. Luckily the curtains were proper blackout curtains and didn’t let any sunshine through in the morning.

Next to the window was a sitting area with armchairs.

The bathrooms at InterContinental Ljubljana are a good size with a bathtub and a separate shower cubicle. The toilet was in a cubicle next to the shower.

As you can see in the picture below there was a large mirror with a further round one and a smaller make up mirror. Thanks to the attached lamp circles around them, the light was perfect for doing your makeup.

Toiletries are by Chopard which is an improvement on the standard InterContinental Agraria ones.  I really liked the shower gel as it had oil pearls in it.

The design and size of the bedroom and bathroom is the same in all rooms and the suites have an additional dining area.

Meeting spaces

The whole of the basement is dedicated meeting space including a ballroom for up to 300 people and five multi purpose meeting rooms.

On the 19th floor are a further two meeting halls which can be combined.
