Bits: IAG / BA buys Monarch’s Gatwick slots, MyFlights to close, new Amex cashback deals

News in brief:

BA owner IAG buys Monarch’s Gatwick landing slots

IAG, the parent of British Airways, confirmed last night that it had bought the landing slots at Gatwick Airport previously used by failed airline Monarch.

Whilst many of these will end up with British Airways, it is also possible that we will see LEVEL – the new low-cost long-haul airline – launching from London.  The BA strategy appears to be to put Norwegian under enough pressure that it decides to move its aircraft out of the UK for easier pickings elsewhere.

We may also see Vueling and Aer Lingus picking up an extra slot or two.

Monarch reportedly had 155 weekly slot pairs at Gatwick.  This gives British Airways substantial scope to grow, but at the same time may give a short-term headache due to the ‘use it or lose it’ rules.

BA will need to rustle up 5-10 aircraft to fly these slots even if they are empty ‘ghost flights’.  A more likely option is that IAG will lease slots out to other airlines for a number of seasons whilst it finds suitable aircraft and routes to fill them.

Short term this could be a problem.  Unless it can get an exception from Gatwick, BA must operate 80% of the Monarch slots over the Winter season or they will revert to the airport.  Would BA really allocate a couple of aircraft to Gatwick which take off and land immediately, with no passengers or cabin crew, 20 times per day, seven days a week?

MyFlights to close

Unfortunately – very unfortunately, as it is my main flight bookings tracker – the MyFlights iOS app and website is to close at the end of the year.

MyFlights is reliant on an agreement with Amadeus, the global flight distribution system, to operate.  From January, Amadeus will introduce new security procedures that require approval from the booking agent before a booking can be accessed.  Since it is impossible for MyFlights to get such agreements from every airline and travel agent, it has little choice but to close the consumer facing version.

It will continue as a B2B product, marketed to travel agents to offer as a service to their customers, although it will only be able to track bookings made via that specific travel agent.

I have known Chris, who founded MyFlights, for many years and it is a shame to see the product end like this.  There is nothing else on the market that can track, in real time, the current status of your flight bookings and update you as soon as there are any changes.  It has saved my bacon a few times when British Airways has cancelled flights or changed aircraft types, allowing me to call and make alternative arrangements before my fellow passengers found out what was happening.

Anyone who has paid for the premium version of MyFlights will receive a pro-rata refund at the end of the year.

Three generous new American Express cashback deals

Three cashback offers appeared on my American Express account over the weekend which may come in handy over the Christmas shopping period.  These may or may not be available for you – check the ‘Offers’ tab of your online statement page for every card you own.

The most relevant is £5 cashback when you spend £50 at World Duty Free.  This deals runs until the end of the year.

For our male readers, Mr Porter is offering £75 cashback on a £250 spend.  This is valid until 18th December.  Mr Porter has a very broad selection of high-end clothing, footwear and accessories.

Harvey Nichols is offering £30 back on a £100 spend.  This runs until 10th December.  A £100 in-store gift card purchase should do the trick if you want to conserve your spending for the January sales – I bought a £100 Harrods gift card last week to trigger an identical offer.

The annual American Express ‘Shop Small’ campaign is also back from 2nd December, getting you £5 back on every £10 purchase in participating independent shops (and occasionally bars!).  We will cover this later in the week.

  • Kevin says:

The best AMEX offer for me at the moment is £5 back for £10 amdprnd at the Post Office.

  • John B says:

Small print on the Harvey Nichols offer suggests gift cards are excluded.

    • Genghis says:

Give it a go. I’ve not done it myself but I bet a £10 donation to GOSH it works if bought in store?

    • Rob says:

Always says that. Will probably work irrespective – will try to check.

  • R says:

Wanted to follow up on the Harvey Nichols gift card issue. T&C definitely say no gift cards, but I assume that Rob would not have said it works, if it does not and it is also hard to see how it can be policed (although it presumably could if it was all carefully set up). Can anyone please confirm ? If it does work, does it make a difference if in-store or online ?

    • Rob says:

It usually works. I am not giving a cast iron guarantee but as long as you buy instore you should be fine. Buying online is different as they are often processed by a 3rd party.

    • Alan says:

Always worked fine in-store before. Bought a few hundred when it was the bonkers offers years ago where you were getting stuff at a fraction of the price due to how much they gave you back!

  • Simon says:

Do ghost flights exist and if they do, how common are they? Shouldn’t be allowed, a waste of resources and needless pollution.

    • Genghis says:

People respond to incentives (or punishment). Until externalities are properly priced in, the status quo will remain.

  • Wally1976 says:

OT thinking of a possible trip to Lapland for next Christmas before the children get too old for all the santa stuff. Any tips? I know I can use Avios to Rovaniemi via Helsinki but don’t think there’s direct flights there (and that’s the place for all the santa stuff I believe)? Any other options? What about hotels? I have some SPG points, Hilton and Club Carlson. Or am I just going to end up needing a package deal? Thanks for any advice. Also if it’s worth doing for a 10 and 7 year old as they will be then.

    • Ro says:

yeah you’ll want to go to rovaniemi
i believe there is an early morning flight direct from gatwick to rovaniemi with norwegian.
i flew there on finnair, indirect. you can fly the a350 to make the rovaniemi connection – if youre bothered by that at all lol.

not sure about hotels. I stayed in a boutique in the forest about 30km away and would highly recommend it if you dont mind hiring a car. Called Beana Laponia.

make sure you take the kids to go huskey sledding and to a reindeer farm…

    • ankomonkey says:

We went to Kittila/Levi in Feb this year. It’s far less touristy than Rovaniemi. We flew Norwegian indirect (wife wanted to go to Helsinki anyway). I believe Finnair have direct flights on certain days to Kittila, Rovaniemi and one other place further north. When I checked for our trip the Avios and cash required made it really poor value. Our Norwegian flights cost about the same as the fees on the AY reward flights.

We couldn’t find any hotel points redemptions in Lapland – the big chains don’t have hotels there. We did a glass igloo stay, went skiing at Levi ski resort, did huskies, reindeer and Santa’s home visit in the woods (just 3 families rather than queue up for a photo like seeing him in a UK shopping centre).

    • Wally1976 says:

Thanks for the info guys, I’ll take a good look.

    • @mkcol says:

@Wally1976 (& anyone else interested) In a former life I was a travel agent & was hosted on a 4 night educational staying the Hotel Levitunturi in Levi (as mentioned above) courtesy of Inghams. We toured lots of different hotels, did *all* the winter activities except skiing (which was fine as I’m a skier anyway) and even went down to Rovaniemi by coach to Santaland and met Father Christmas himself (this was one of the excursions they sell to clients).
We were a group of mid 20s to mid 30s and all had a great time, not many of us were skiers.
It was so good in fact that I booked a week’s ski holiday the following season with my other half, best friend & my mother staying at the same hotel. Again we did loads of “wintery” activities as well as this time getting some skiing in. Again we had a great time
I would go back there in a heartbeat even though this is getting on 2 decades ago I was there.
Even if you’re only actually wanting a few days there in December you may well find it’s the same sort of price taking a package trip there for a week in January/February.

      • ankomonkey says:

We stayed at Levitunturi Hotel. Would recommend overall, but not the flashiest place!

  • Ross says:

The BA Monarch/ghost flights situation is interesting. It may be coincidence but I’ve just been bumped from my WTP seat on a BA flight from Doha to Heathrow into an economy seat with Qatar airways. Curiously, there are no flights that week now. As it’s a work trip, I asked to be moved to the Muscat/London flight, as that was workebale, but there are seemingly no flights from there either. Perhaps there are many other reasons – it was only explained as ‘operational reasons’ – but this could be likely. The slack is being picked up by Qatar, a one world partner who has spare capacity due to the embargo-enforced reduction of flights.

    • Gavin says:

According to flyertalk BA are cancelling Doha flights and shifting to Qatar due to too many crew nearing their annual hours quota

If you’re in WTP – tough!

    • Ro says:

as Al-Baker would say… qatar Y is as good as premium economy on other airlines 😉
(in the case of WTP i don’t even think he is that far off)

      • Leo says:

It would **** me right off. I’m only after legroom in PE.

        • Ross says:

That’s all I was after! I normally fly business, but couldn’t justify the £3k one-way fee for BA or QR.

  • Andy S says:

Only useful offer for me is the Greene King one!

    • Alan says:

Yeah, we’ll be using that one.

The shop small promotion might work for us as the local chippie is listed as participating

    • @mkcol says:

I had no idea they owned Loch Fyne – which is likely the only way I’d use it.

  • Beefy says:

Can you get one of these cards from the post office with £10 on then top it up with additional £10 purchases (using other cards)?

    • mark2 says:

Quite possibly, but not necessarily. Since they have no value until they go through the till I would expect to be able to.

      • Beefy says:

Separate transactions no problem. Just be easier to have 1 card and top up 3 more times vs buying 4 separate cards 🙂
