IHG’s extended ‘100% buy points bonus’ ends today

IHG Rewards Club – the InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza etc scheme – extended its recent ‘100% buy points bonus’ promotion but IT DEFINITELY ENDS TOMORROW.  It is as generous an offer as you will ever see for IHG points.

The page to buy points is here.

The standard prices, before the bonus, are:

  • 1,000 – 10,000 points for $13.50 per 1,000 points
  • 11,000 – 25,000 points for $12.50 per 1,000 points
  • 26,000 – 60,000 points for $11.50 per 1,000 points

The bonus rates are:

  • 40% bonus when you buy 5,000 – 19,000 points
  • 100% bonus when you buy 20,000 – 60,0000 points

With a 100% bonus, you would be able to buy 120,000 IHG points for (at current exchange rates for $690) £515.  This assumes your credit card has 0% FX fees.

At the top end of the IHG Rewards Club portfolio, you have InterContinental properties which top out at 50,000 – 60,000 points per night. That’s what you would pay for InterContinental Le Grand in Paris or the InterContinental Amstel in Amsterdam.

With a 100% bonus, IHG is effectively selling you a night at a 50,000 point property for £215 all-in.  A 60,000 point hotel would be £257.  At the bottom end, the points for a 5,000 point PointBreaks night would cost just £22.

You should look at this if you have a ‘buy points’ target for your Accelerate promotion – although it makes more sense to buy 5,000 and get the bonus than buy 1,000 for no bonus.  If you are topping off your account, it is also a good deal irrespective of the exact cents per point cost.  The maximum number of points you can buy per year is 120,000 (ie 60,000 plus the 60,000 bonus).

You can buy via this link.  The offer ends tomorrow, 8th December.

Club Eurostar launches today

If all goes to plan, the new Club Eurostar loyalty scheme should be launching today.

We wrote a long article here with our initial impressions of the changes.  I will write something else once I’ve had a chance to look at all the bits and pieces which were not covered in the first announcement.

Starting on Monday, we have a fantastic Club Eurostar competition on Head for Points.  Not only can you win a big pile of Club Eurostar points, you can also receive top-tier Carte Blanche status in Club Eurostar.

And, thanks to the new ‘Anytime’ feature with the new Club Eurostar, the winner can be 100% certain that they will be able to redeem their points for the train of their choice (unless it is completely sold out for cash, of course).  And, with no taxes or charges with Club Eurostar redemptions, your ‘free’ ticket is genuinely free.

Make sure you visit Head for Points on Monday to enter.

How to get Club Eurostar points and lounge access from UK credit cards (April 2024)

Club Eurostar does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Club Eurostar points by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 15:1 into Club Eurostar points.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, so you will get the equivalent of 1 Club Eurostar point for every £15 you spend.

American Express Platinum comes with a great Eurostar benefit – Eurostar lounge access!

You can enter any Eurostar lounge, irrespective of your ticket type, simply by showing The Platinum Card at the desk.  No guests are allowed but you can get entry for your partner by issuing them with a free supplementary Amex Platinum card on your account.

Did anyone manage to get Iberia plus working yesterday? I was trying to look up the cost in avios of the Level flights to Montreal from Paris but kept getting errors.

    • Rob says:

As a test, I also tried London to Madrid yesterday and got error for that too. Whole system seems messed up, as was ba.com the day before.

      • Cate says:

I’ve had problems since Saturday and can’t get access to my account. The IB customer service rep I spoke to said it was a known problem and apparently it’s because I have the wrong computer, tablets, phones?!?. I never know what I’m going to hear next from IB.

  • James says:

Will we be able to transfer Amex MR points into club Eurostar ? if so, at a good rate ??

    • Trevor says:

Yes, if the rate is good, that will be a good option. I’m just about to flush out one of our Gold cards.

    • Nick M says:

Under the old scheme, it was relatively expensive if you would usually plan ahead – but I liked to have enough for a couple of last minute trips where the cost then made a bit more sense… I need to run the numbers again for the new rules, but will probably top up a little – especially I have been offered a reasonable rebate for non airline/hotel transfers

    • Rob says:

Yes, and I believe the rate remains the same (15:1). This should mean you are getting a decent deal if you book an ‘Anytime’ seat on peak Friday / Sunday trains.

      • Nick M says:

I’ve just done a couple of example searches London to Brussels… the following are the prices shown for each leg in Standard Class (although there is a premium added if you don’t book a return) and assuming a conversion of 15:1 from Amex:
        – Traveling tomorrow – 750 points (11250 MR) or £149
        – Traveling on a Friday towards the end of Jan – 500 points (7500 MR) or £29-74 depending on time of train

  • Oli says:

With the old scheme, Carte Blanche was already guaranteed to be able to redeem their points on the train of their choice, as long as there was a cash fare for sale. But now it will cost them 1,500 points instead of 900 points!

    • Genghis says:

With all changes there’s winners and losers. IIRC from running the numbers when first announced, I’ll win. I’ll earn more points from my expensive work tickets and will spend fewer points when I redeem (I book stuff way in advance).

  • Prins Polo says:

I think one point that Anika misses in the original article about Eurostar changes is how they calculate value of the ticket. £100 ticket will be two £50 one-ways, which in turn means it will earn 15 + 15 points (since each one-way is below £55). I wish instead they introduced true one-for-one revenue earning without this unfair rounding down.

    OT
I have received the statement credit for some cards where the saved ShopSmall offer has disappeared.
No credit from Lloyds or MBNA for purchases on4/12 yet.

    • Waribai says:

Do amex issue goodwill credits if your lloyds or MBNA amex is refused? Or is that just for their own cards?

  • Alan says:

I can never seem to find out how many IHG points you need for a particular hotel. I assume that is because I don’t have many points.

We are looking at going to NY in February but I can’t work out whether the IHG offer would give us good value as I can’t find a list of points needed!

    Very frustrating

    • Hayley says:

I’m having the same problem as well. Also the link to buy points in the article doesn’t work for me for some reason.

    • mark2 says:

      try searching without signing in.

    • JamesB says:

You just change best available rate to reward stay in the rates field. It will then display every hotel in the city you search with the number of points needed.

      • Alan says:

        Ah, thanks for that.

Just checked and I’ll be better off with my cash booking, but really worth knowing for future use.

      • Genghis says:

You can also select BAR and reward stay rates so you can then see if using points yields reasonable value on the one page.

  • Vivian says:

O/T today’s IHG Iggy snow globe shake draw is 10,000 Avios

    • Peter K says:

Thanks for the heads up. With no bonus points for playing this year I’d been ignoring it but will have a go at this!

    • Alan says:

Thanks for the tip, entered for today!

  • EvilDoctorK says:

O/T but the old article is below the fold … Anyone else think the Amex Shop Small thing is pretty screwed up this year ?

I’ve done about 1/2 a dozen transactions that should have qualified … I received an email for two of them , but only one has posted the £5 credit ( and that one was one of the ones I didn’t receive an email for ?? )

    • Kinkell says:

I think things are a bit slow and taking a few days to register . I’ve had a scattering of emails, but everything has eventually posted to our accounts, so far. Maybe a little more patience ?
