News in brief:

Virgin Atlantic launching its Winter sale today

Virgin Atlantic is launching its Winter sale today across its network, across all classes.

I don’t have a detailed list of prices – you will need to click here and see what is showing.

All I know is that Upper Class prices will start at £1289, Premium Economy at £632 and Economy at £359.  I will do another article in a few days when I have been able to see what is available.

The Virgin Atlantic Winter Sale site is here.

Double Avios with Charles Tyrwhitt

Shirt, suit and tie maker Charles Tyrwhitt generously donated a free £30 tie for every guest at our Christmas party on Tuesday.

The Tyrwhitt sale is now on.  Alongside this, British Airways is offering double Avios – that is 8 per £1 spent – on all Tyrwhitt purchases before 31st January.

Double Avios are not given automatically.  Buying online, you must use this link to access the CT website.  You must quote “exec17” when you buy in store, by phone or by mail order.

Earning miles on Airbnb stays

Tomorrow we are running a special competition with Japanese airline ANA, with a prize which would make a great Christmas gift for any aviation or science fiction fan.

Separately, ANA has joined the ranks of airlines offering miles for booking Airbnb stays.  You can earn up to 200 ANA miles when you book your Airbnb stays via ANA’s website.  The offer runs until the end of 2018.

This Head for Points article shows you how you can also earn miles with Delta and, for Australian residents only, Qantas via Airbnb.

If you are new to Airbnb, you can get £25 off your first £55+ stay via our referral link here.  If you book an ‘Airbnb for Business’ property you will also receive a £22 voucher off your second stay – full details here.

Do we think that’s the end of the reward seat sales then, there hasn’t been one since the new reward seat pricing structure

  • Sussex bantam says:

That CT sends me to a front page saying ‘special offer for white company customers’. Is it the correct one ??

  • Kip says:

Anyone know if you can use the VS Amex voucher with a sale fare?

    • Graham Walsh says:

Don’t see why not, just need to make sure there is availability.

    • Charlie says:

Is this the voucher that upgrades an Economy redemption to Premium Economy, after spending £10,000 on the MBNA Virgn Amex? I’m pretty sure this is only for redemption bookings only using miles, not cash bookings.

It can be used on redemption bookings during a sale, i.e. lower cost in miles.

      • Graham Walsh says:

Yes correct, that voucher. Good to know re cash bookings. I did use it last year in a redemption sale.

  • Mark Smith says:

O/T has anyone else seen their shop small saving disappear from their AMEX card? I saved it a few weeks ago and have used it 3/4 times so far but it has gone from my saved deals and isn’t available in the list of available savings/deals.

    • Rob says:

+1 me too but it is still triggering the £5 credit when used.

    • Tom says:

Yep, went from both of my cards. Spoke to an agent there who confirmed that it was still live, though I have; t had any emailed re triggering the offer when I bought some dog food the other day.

      • the real harry1 says:

I used my BP £5 & that disappeared as well – usually says redeemed

        no £5 yet, either

        • Tom says:

Have now had more visits to places listed on SS that don’t actually take amex than do.
Annoyingly these are places that I genuinely only went to because of the SS and wouldn’t have gone otherwise.
Will keep protesting to amex but their stock answer so far is “sorry not sorry”.

  • Richard Cooper says:

I’ve not been able to use my Virgin Atlantic MBNA Amex PE upgrade vouchers on our flights yet. Each time I call to use them I am told they have to be used on PE seats available for miles bookings and I can’t find any! Trying to use them on May 2018 Cancun-LGW flights. So at the moment I have used miles to get two return economy flights with the hope that PE miles seats come up later. A bit disappointed as I had assumed they would be easier to use than this….ie. if PE was available then they could be used. Anyone else had problems using the PE upgrade vouchers?

    • Graham Walsh says:

I must have been luck to use this earlier this year over Easter to the US. Booked last September. Be good if there was a simple site showing the availability rather than searching all the time. Is VS on Expert Flyer?

    • TravellingJake says:

      That’s a real shame.

I was lucky to be able to use my voucher twice and didnt struggle for availability either time. Had to cancel my original booking to SFO as our travel plans changed. VS also very kindly extended the validity of the voucher so that we could rebook to DEL.

Did have to be fairly flexible with the travel dates to get seat availability but that wasnt an issue for us as we dont have kids and can travel when its cheapest.

      • TravellingJake says:

P.s. anyone else underwhelmed by the VS sale fares? Nothing standout that I’ve seen so far.

        • Billy says:

Upper Class, London to East Coast USA is valid for ONE WEEK in 2018. Pathetic.

  • meta says:

O/T: Anyone knows how long before Miles&More credit card miles are transferred over after statement?

  • RTS says:

OT: BREAKING NEWS! I referred myself using my Plat to Nectar. I got the referral points 😀

    • Matt says:

Very interesting. Straight forward application, no trying to hide what you were doing?

Would be interested to hear if anyone else has done that successfully or unsuccessfully.

      • RTS says:

Straight forward application. No funny business. No where in T&Cs suggests you cannot refer yourself. 🙂

    • Peter K says:

That’s cool. I cancelled my Platinum last night or might have given this a go. You win some…

    • Cate says:

Interesting news indeed. We don’t really want to wait six months for applying for a BA card and If we could self refer we could take these cards out now. If this works then we’ll be holding on to our amex longer.

      • Genghis says:

Having done my modelling, it will result in me keeping the cards slightly longer to earn more points at a “price” / “cost” (ie the delta in fees and the lowered churn rate) I’m happy with
