Coming at 1.01pm – a big hotel loyalty announcement

I have been sent, under embargo, some big news about changes to one of the major hotel loyalty schemes.

It isn’t the end of the world, by any means, but if you pop back after 1.01pm today (Monday) you will discover some changes to one of the major programmes.  And, for many of you, you won’t like them much, although it isn’t all bad news.

    Mmmm Hilton I recon.

    • JamesB says:

Agree, we already know about IHG and the others are not so major within HFP views context. My guess breakfasr is gone except for Diamond. Fifth night free maybe gone and redemption hikes. If it is Marriott though I suspect the travel packages gone and the SPG to airline transfers would be much enhanced. Time to spend Hilton and transfer SPY as a safety measure.

      • YC says:

I agree as well. I also had a few Hilton stays on 1/1 and 2/1. Not credited yet saying waiting for the new year to be updated. Doesn’t usually take that long. May just be coincidence

      • Alex W says:

Better not enhance the travel packages, I’ve been saving for one for the last year!

        • adey says:

Just made a few redemption bookings just in case there is a catastrophic reduction in point value (by whatever means). Can cancel some or all after quiet contemplation after Rob’s announcement!

          Adey

      • Leo says:

Are you sure about the Hilton breakfast guess considering Waldorfs are now giving breakfast to Diamonds and Golds from the beginning of the year?

    • Mark says:

Many of us have suspected that since Hilton dropped the categories last year that it was the first step in moving towards a cash based redemption system. Although they kept the maximum redemption points at the old category levels, my bet would be that they drop this now.

      • moham aham says:

i can barely get any value out of hilton points at the moment, so i can’t believe it could be more of a devaluation. takes abut 10 stays to get 50k points and then anywhere decent is asking for 200k. Best used for cheap places where 25k = 50 pounds. it’s not a great redemption programme. ihg i have found to be much better.

  • Worzel says:

That gorillas’ backside is going to be well-sore by 1.01pm! 🙂 .

    • moham aham says:

and very dizzy. if the gorilla is a clue then it must be to do with accor

      • moham aham says:

although in fairness, no one here really follows accor.

        • Delbert says:

Agreed, a very weak loyalty scheme to follow, moham. Though, my wife and I stay at Accor hotels quite regularly as our regular stops are convenient, service is great and rooms are clean and spacious. We don’t need status to access the Executive Lounge or Club Millesime as we’re in the premium rooms anyway and always a very nice breakfast in quiet surroundings.

    • JamesB says:

Pity it doesn’t have a tutu on!

  • Pedant says:

And the big change is… chimpanzees to be renamed “gorillas” 😀

  • Graham Walsh says:

As the time is 1pm definitely a US chain as the press release will be 8am EST.

  • Mark Priest says:

It’s 3pm here in China, am I not entitled to see it now! 🙂

  • Andrew Holden says:

That’s actually a Chimpanzee Rob (is this OT?).

  • Czechoslovakia says:

Hmmm. Yet more fun. First guess would be Marriott/SPG, but Rob states ONE program, not two. So I’m putting my money on the end of the travel packages from Marriott, or the end of SPG Amex transfers… Time to transfer my MR stash? Decisions decisions….

    • Peter K says:

Unlikely as there is still an SPG card, but if you will kick yourself for not transferring them if it turns out it is stopped later then do it now. They will still be useful in SPG/Marriott once there.

  • Tilly says:

    Cute chimp.

Glad i booked my 5th night free reward at Hilton for May already. Have a couple of cash stays booked with Hilton later this year so hipe changes not too dramatic ………..presuming it’s Hilton.
