IHG news: your Accelerate Q2 target viewable, and an interesting IHG / Avis deal

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG’s Accelerate promotion will be returning.  This is probably not a major surprise to anyone, but as it is generally good fun and a decent deal I doubt many will complain.

The new version will run from 1st May to 31st July.

If you register via this page of the IHG website, you can see your points target.  I will have nine targets with a maximum of 55,700 points available.

What you can’t see yet are what your targets are, as the site is not fully functioning.  I will do a full article when it is working properly.

IHG Rewards Club

Interesting IHG Rewards Club and Avis promotion

Avis and IHG Rewards Club have launched a new offer which could be more interesting than it looks.

Via this page, any Avis booking:

made by 15th May

for rental before 31st December

across EMEA, Asia and the US

for a Group C or higher car

for 4+ days

….. will earn you 5,000 bonus IHG Rewards Club points.  This is on top of the – pitiful – base earnings of 125 IHG Rewards Club points per day.

There is also a Spin To Win competition on the site.  Enter your Avis rental number – which I don’t think needs to be booked via the IHG portal – and you can instantly win a car upgrade or some IHG Rewards Club points.

This is why the deal may be better than it looks.  When I wrote this long article on which IHG points count for status and which don’t, the consensus from your comments is that points for car rentals DO count for elite status.

That is not 100% guaranteed.  It is also not 100% guaranteed that the bonus points would count, even if the base points did.  However, earning 5000 bonus IHG Rewards Club points which count towards elite status is a lot more interesting that just earning 5000 bonus IHG points on their own, which I only value at £20.

Full details are on this IHG / Avis microsite.

Mine are far better than normal, and quite achievable. 51k on offer with most relatively easy to hit.

    1. 10k for 5 nights.
    2. 8.4k stay 2 nights in Holiday inn
    3. 12k for 2 weekends.
    4. 2.4k for 1 Points and cash booking
    5. 1.5k for paying for 1 stay on the IHG card
    6. 2k for staying once in May
    7. 13.2k for achieving 5 of the 6 above
Should do these on business and rack up close to 100k what with normal spend points and card points. .

    • Wivus says:

Actually missed the first one which is 2k for one night.
So, if I am correct. I can stay two weekends, one in May. Pay for one with points and cash, the other with my credit card. Make one of them a long weekend to hit 5 nights. One of them in a Holiday Inn then for that I hit all 51k + usual points rewards. Two nights in a good I.C. done. Fine by me 🙂

“Pay for one with points and cash”
Normally the “stay” targets are cash only. Double check the terms.

        • Wivus says:

Thanks for the head up G. Cannot see anything there but chances are I’ll exceed the long weekend scenario anyway. Cheers

        • RussellH says:

I have had points+cash as a target a couple of times, and points only at least once. But yes, otherwise normally cash only

  • Paul says:

My wife’s targets would get he 45,000 points and mine 53,000. That’s just not enough to drag me away from Hilton. To spend more than 15 nights in hotels and not get the equivalent of a single night at an IC is no longer worth it.
I have now missed 2 accelerate promos on the bounce ie no stays since August 2017 and the targets get worse and less lucrative.
Not including August is also irritating despite the family hols starting in late July this year. I have 3 nights in a Hilton and 3 reward nights in an IC before August 2nd but I may now switch the IC to Hilton and save myself 180,000 points.

  • Alex W says:

Hooray, finally IHG haven’t given me an impossible “corporate rate” accelerate target. This made the last 3 accelerates virtually impossible as I didn’t have a corporate rate.

  • TripRep says:

Worth following through to the the VS sale page…

    “Get excited for Economy”

    Hmmm… 😀

  • Mike G says:

Wow, 77,700 point target for me this time. Almost tempting…

  • Stuart says:

Any tips on the cheapest redemption option?

You earned your points, now use them! Redeem your points for anything, from a digital download to a Reward Night, and you’ll earn 1,000 bonus points. Terms

Will registering cancel my current accelrate target?
