Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

IHG news: your Accelerate Q2 target viewable, and an interesting IHG / Avis deal

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG’s Accelerate promotion will be returning.  This is probably not a major surprise to anyone, but as it is generally good fun and a decent deal I doubt many will complain.

The new version will run from 1st May to 31st July.

If you register via this page of the IHG website, you can see your points target.  I will have nine targets with a maximum of 55,700 points available.

What you can’t see yet are what your targets are, as the site is not fully functioning.  I will do a full article when it is working properly.

IHG Rewards Club

Interesting IHG Rewards Club and Avis promotion

Avis and IHG Rewards Club have launched a new offer which could be more interesting than it looks.

Via this page, any Avis booking:

made by 15th May

for rental before 31st December

across EMEA, Asia and the US

for a Group C or higher car

for 4+ days

….. will earn you 5,000 bonus IHG Rewards Club points.  This is on top of the – pitiful – base earnings of 125 IHG Rewards Club points per day.

There is also a Spin To Win competition on the site.  Enter your Avis rental number – which I don’t think needs to be booked via the IHG portal – and you can instantly win a car upgrade or some IHG Rewards Club points.

This is why the deal may be better than it looks.  When I wrote this long article on which IHG points count for status and which don’t, the consensus from your comments is that points for car rentals DO count for elite status.

That is not 100% guaranteed.  It is also not 100% guaranteed that the bonus points would count, even if the base points did.  However, earning 5000 bonus IHG Rewards Club points which count towards elite status is a lot more interesting that just earning 5000 bonus IHG points on their own, which I only value at £20.

Full details are on this IHG / Avis microsite.

Mine are for 46,400 total: stay in May 2000, birthday bonus stay once for 2000, stay 5 nights 10000, 2 app bookings for 2,200, stay 2 weekends for 8000, stay at 2 Hix for 5600, 3600 for booking 3 bonus rate packages, 11500 for achieving 6 out of 7.

I have no actual travel plans this quarter so although it looks achievable with 3 stays (2 weekends at HIX booked via the app on bonus point packages, one in May, plus a single night anywhere on a bonus point package) it’s not worth going out of my way for given that I don’t have any very cheap HIX near me.

  • Carl says:

OT: Is there any precedent for changing your tier point collection year end. I normally never earn status, but I have a business class flight to Australia coming up which straddles my tier point collection year and a business class return flight to Shanghai later in the year, so could get status if I just moved my tier point collection year end forward by a week so that all of the flights were in the same year.

    • Rob says:

No. This is a sore point for a lot of people, for example me, my wife and my kids all have a different end date. We could do exactly the same trips over a year but only some of us get status.

      • mike says:

agreed, this is one very major flaw in the BAEC system. A once in a lifetime ability to change your TP year, or at the very least the ability to align everyone in a HH account, would be a great enhancement. have a word Rob !

        • Stu N says:

My girlfriend and I have same year ends. It wasn’t a consideration when we got together but it certainly makes life much easier.

          🙂

          • Rob says:

Perhaps we could start a BAEC dating service where this is a key criteria?

        • Stu N says:

Wouldn’t you risk attracting Gold diggers? ????

  • Trevor Tonian says:

    Mine isnt exciting at all

I got 92,000 bonus points for Q1 and my total for Q2 is nowhere near that. 16 nights for 32, 000 pop up alot for me also

  • Genghis says:

Do you sit in the back on a dust sheet?

  • Relaxo says:

OT: Marriott related. I am trying to maximize points earning from a 4 night stay at 1 Marriott property. I have used referal link to open an account for my dad (gives both of us 2K points each per stay). Also sign him up for the new member offer which will get him a free night certificate after two stays in 120 days. There is also another offer which gives 3K bonus points for any weekend stay. We just need the 1 room to share so the the plan is to book nights 1 and 3 under my dads account; nights 2 & 4 under my account so we can get Gold benefits (barring any sudden implementation of status level changes next week). So this way we both get 2 stays under our belt ( a potential 12K bonus points over the wknd). Will let them know at check-in to create separate folios but not allocate room as would prefer not to switch rooms daily. Anyone with experience foresee any problems with this strategy? Any risk of them merging all 4 nights into 1 reservation if booked under 2 different accounts?

  • USATB says:

Have been using points last year or so rather than earning so didn’t do much on either of last 2 accelerate rounds…. surprisingly good target this time.

94,500 points, can be done in 5 nights for 92,500 of them……..!

    2,000 – stay once
    10,000 – 5 nights
    12,600 – 2 stays at Crowne Plaza
    9,600 – 2 stays via app
28,800 – 2 stays Saturday night plus another night
2,000 – get the credit card (already got so can’t do)
    27,500 – achievement bonus
2,000 – stay in may bonus

so 2 weekend app booked crowne plaza stays plus another night and done…

    • Colin JE says:

Mine not so good (46,000 points) and I’ve got the same issue occurring. One of my targets is 2000 points if I get the IHG card. Already did last quarter. That narrows the chances of achieving 5/6 targets.
Unless I cancel my card and reapply, or get the other card of course…

      • Ben says:

can you hold the free and premium card?

      • h2d says:

Previous Accelerate targets where this was the case and I already held the card I automatically received the points and the task was marked as completed, but as always YMMV

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Finally an interesting set of offers:

    500 Download the IHG® App
    2,000 3 nights
2,000 2 stays at Your Rate
    2,000 Stay at 3 brands
23,500 Your Achievement Bonus (for 4/4)

Can be done in 3 nights by the look of it.

    • HAM76 says:

Same as I have this quarter and next quarter. Writing this from a Crowne Plaza to complete the three brands target for this quarter.

  • r* says:

Whats the lowest value points redemption for anything on IHG? Annoyingly, one of mine is to spend points.

    • Rob says:

I’ve got that. Remember it is NOT 1st May yet do don’t do it now.

You want something from the digital catalogue for peanuts. You will make a profit, don’t worry!

    • Sididdly says:

I bought a digital magazine for 3 points.
