Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

IHG news: your Accelerate Q2 target viewable, and an interesting IHG / Avis deal

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG’s Accelerate promotion will be returning.  This is probably not a major surprise to anyone, but as it is generally good fun and a decent deal I doubt many will complain.

The new version will run from 1st May to 31st July.

If you register via this page of the IHG website, you can see your points target.  I will have nine targets with a maximum of 55,700 points available.

What you can’t see yet are what your targets are, as the site is not fully functioning.  I will do a full article when it is working properly.

IHG Rewards Club

Interesting IHG Rewards Club and Avis promotion

Avis and IHG Rewards Club have launched a new offer which could be more interesting than it looks.

Via this page, any Avis booking:

made by 15th May

for rental before 31st December

across EMEA, Asia and the US

for a Group C or higher car

for 4+ days

….. will earn you 5,000 bonus IHG Rewards Club points.  This is on top of the – pitiful – base earnings of 125 IHG Rewards Club points per day.

There is also a Spin To Win competition on the site.  Enter your Avis rental number – which I don’t think needs to be booked via the IHG portal – and you can instantly win a car upgrade or some IHG Rewards Club points.

This is why the deal may be better than it looks.  When I wrote this long article on which IHG points count for status and which don’t, the consensus from your comments is that points for car rentals DO count for elite status.

That is not 100% guaranteed.  It is also not 100% guaranteed that the bonus points would count, even if the base points did.  However, earning 5000 bonus IHG Rewards Club points which count towards elite status is a lot more interesting that just earning 5000 bonus IHG points on their own, which I only value at £20.

Full details are on this IHG / Avis microsite.

Book and stay 8 “your rate bonus packages” I don’t even understand it. Iv never stayed on a bonus package so 8 quite a big start.

    • Ed says:

Mine is asking me for 14 of them. I can’t really do these at all on the majority of my stays as they are corporate, so paying for bonus points that end up in my pocket is very dodgy.

I can, and do, add them occasionally when I am leisure travelling, but not to the tune of almost one a week over the length of the promotion.

  • Cate ⛱️ says:

16,800 bonus points for me for staying at any two different IC.

  • Janeyferr says:

I didn’t stay at all last time round, wasn’t worth it. This time is more realistic for me:

    Anniversary bonus – Stay once – 2000
    Stay 5 nights – 10000
    Stay at 2 HIX – 8400
Book 2 stays with the App – 9600
Stay for the weekend – 6000
Book with the credit card – 1500
Earn when you redeem – 1000
    6 of 7 achievement bonus – 14300
Stay in May bonus – 2000

Can do that all with a couple of pre-festival nights and a long weekend away without resorting to special adventures.

Has anyone by chance received their 500 bonus Avios via Iberia for signing up to IHG? … If i recall correctly the sign up points were to post by mid/late February.

    • Matt says:

It didn’t work by the deadline so I sent an email to IHG and they sorted it pretty quickly.

  • Boi says:

OT: need to transfer £5000 to €. What is the most cost-effective way I can use while earning points too?

    • Rob says:

Virgin Money Transfer is still doing 3000 miles I think for new customers. Avios has its new partner Midpoint which seems to be very competitive (search for our article).

    • HAM76 says:

Revolut, if you have a credit/debit card that doesn‘t incur the one percent fee for topping up.

  • GTALBOT says:

Note: For IHG/Avis Spin to Win – I used a pre-existing Avis booking reference for a rental in June 2018, which had been booked on 5th March 2018. This allowed me to spin and win, going against the IHG/Avis site statement that booking must be made between 1st April and 15th May.

    • Lee says:

I did the same thing twice! Won an upgrade once and then some points. Let’s see if the upgrade happens / points post.

    • Graham Walsh says:

Thanks for the tip. Got a car booked via ba.com. Booked the basic Fiat 500 option and just won an upgrade. Will find out in 2 weeks 🙂

  • Kathy says:

Book by April 30th for this one.

    • Nick says:

That’s not quite right and, just to clarify, it’s actually register from April 1st until April 30th 2018, book and stay from April 1st until June 30th, 2018. 🙂

  • Dougie Forde says:

If you have a target of so many nights on Accelerate do nights booked with points count?
