Last night Marriott held a major event in New York to outline the first steps of the integration of Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards.

This is what was announced, along with some other information supplied to me in advance.  It covers almost everything I wanted to know.

You will be able to find the official version of the news on the Marriott website here.

When do the changes start?

August 2018.  From that date you will be able to permanently combine your existing Marriott Rewards, The Ritz Carlton Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest accounts into one account.

You will be able to book and redeem at ALL 29 combined Marriott and Starwood brands on both the Marriott and Starwood websites.

The individual programme names will continue until the end of 2018, but from August all earning and spending benefits will be unified between the legacy schemes.

What will the new programme be called?

I don’t know.  We won’t find out until 2019.

What is the point earning structure?

The current Marriott Rewards points structure will be the basis of the new programme.  Starwood Preferred Guest will also adopt this earning structure from August to December, before the new scheme launches in 2019.

You will earn ten base points for every dollar spent at all brands except for Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites and Element which will be five points per every dollar spent.  There will also be elite status bonuses.  In August, all members will begin earning points for food and beverage and qualifying incidentals on their folio, rather than just the room rate.

Here are the status bonuses (based on the new tiers, not your current tier):

  • Silver members will earn 11 points per $1
  • Gold members will earn 12.5 points per $1
  • Platinum members will earn 15 points per $1
  • Platinum Premier members will earn 17.5 points per $1

Marriott says “members will earn more points faster than under the prior programs — on average 20% more points for every dollar spent”.  This primarily reflects the improvement in ‘points per $’ earning at the Starwood brands.

What is happening to elite tiers?

From August, there will be FIVE elite tiers going forward.  These will be based on your COMBINED SPG and Marriott nights in 2018.

You can no longer earn status based on stays, as SPG members can now.  All qualification will be based on nights.

Silver – will require 10 nights

Gold – will require 25 nights

Platinum – will require 50 nights

Platinum Premier – will require 75 nights

Platinum Premier (elite) – will require 100 nights and $20,000 of spend, in return for a personal ambassador

Existing lifetime status benefits will continue to be honoured.

Your existing Marriott tier will be ported to the new programme on this basis in August:

Silver (10-24 nights) = Silver

Silver (25-49 nights) = Gold

Gold = Platinum

Platinum = Platinum Premier

Platinum with 100+ nights and $20k spend = Platinum Premier with Ambassador

Your existing Starwood tier will be ported to the new programme on this basis in August:

Preferred Guest = Silver

Gold = Gold

Platinum = Platinum

Platinum with 75+ nights = Platinum Premier

This is a problem.   This potentially means that if you have Starwood Gold via American Express Platinum, even if you have matched it to Marriott Gold, you will only receive Gold status in the new programme as your status is ‘officially’ driven by your Starwood level.  This will mean that people like myself, who currently receive lounge access and 4pm check-out with a Marriott Gold comped from an SPG Gold, are going to suffer a loss of benefits in August.  We will even see our elite status bonus cut from 50% to 25%.  I await firm confirmation of this though.

What are the status benefits apart from extra base points?

Silver – nothing except points bonus

Gold – 2pm check-out, welcome gift, preferred room

Platinum – 4pm check-out, lounge access, welcome gift, suite upgrade certificates for 50 nights

Platinum Premier – additional suite upgrades for 75 nights

Breakfast benefits are being expanded

Platinum members (current Gold members) will receive free breakfast or lounge access at most of the 29 brands.  For the first time, free breakfast will be offered at resort properties.  Courtyard, AC Hotels, Moxy and Protea will offer free breakfast for the first time.  Some brands will offer a breakfast credit instead of ‘all you can eat’.

You will not get free breakfast at EDITION, Gaylord, The Ritz-Carlton, Marriott Executive Apartments, and Marriott Vacation Club.

However, current Marriott Gold members who were matched from Starwood Gold will LOSE their breakfast / lounge benefit as they will remain Gold in the new programme.

What is happening to points redemptions?

The new reward chart will have peak, standard and off-peak pricing for all hotels.

There will be no blackout dates.

From August to December, all hotels will be available at standard pricing for all dates.  Peak and off-peak pricing will be added in 2019.

Marriott Travel Packages will continue but we do not know the exact details.

Here is the reward chart

Read this as standard / off-peak / peak:

Category 1 – 7.5 / 5 / 10

Category 2 – 12.5 / 10 / 15

Category 3 – 17.5 / 15 / 20

Category 4 – 25 / 20 / 30

Category 5 – 35 / 30 / 40

Category 6 – 50 / 40 / 60

Category 7 – 60 / 50 / 70

Category 8 (2019 only) – 85 / 70 / 100

This is a very good result, in general.  Some of the top SPG hotels will become cheaper, noticeably so off peak, as will some The Ritz-Carlton Hotels.

We do not know at present which hotels will be in which list.  However, unless a ludicrously huge number of hotels went into Category 9 I would imagine that the majority of high profile redemption hotels, especially off peak, will be cheaper.

What will happen to airline transfer rates?

Marriott is keeping the generous SPG system.  3 points = 1 mile with a bonus of 5,000 miles if you transfer 60,000 points.  This is IDENTICAL to the current SPG structure.  It seems that most (all?) partners from all three schemes will remain on board.

You really couldn’t ask for more than this.

What happens with the SPG airline ‘in flight’ partners?

Crossover Rewards with Delta will end as of 15th July.

The partnerships with Emirates and China Eastern will continue for now as long as you are registered.  I am guessing that registration may cease at some point even if the benefits continue.

The Marriott partnership with United will continue.

What happens to the UK credit cards?

The free Marriott UK credit card, issued by Creation, will re-open for new applications in August.  Don’t all rush at once at the opportunity to earn 1 point per £1 spent.  Although, ironically, it will be a better Avios card on that basis than the Lloyds Avios Rewards Mastercard!

The bonus of 10,000 Marriott Rewards for signing up is a tasty 3,333 free Avios though.

The Starwood American Express card will continue.

What happens in 2019 remains to be seen.  Will we really have an American Express card from one issuer and a Mastercard (for the same scheme) from a different issuer?

It appears, at least in the US, that American Express Platinum will continue to give Gold status.

Moments is being expanded

The Moments experiences platform is expanding.  One part of this is commercial – you will be able to buy, for cash, 110,000 (!) experiences.  Special events will continue to be exclusively available for members using points.   There will be a new bespoke Moments Live event series with Keith Urban as one of the first artists to appear.

Conclusion

If Marriott didn’t have such a bad reputation for legging over its loyalty scheme members over the years, we shouldn’t have been surprised by anything here.  The two programmes have been slotted together neatly.  No major feature have gone, no major features have been added – and everyone benefits from having a wider footprint to earn and redeem.

The reality is that most people will be pleasantly surprised by this, as am I.  This is despite the fact that it seems I will lose lounge access and 4pm check-out in August as my Marriott Gold was not earned but comped from my Starwood status.

I am meeting Marriott this morning and if anything else interesting turns up I will write it up later.

For now, though, you can stop worrying and go back to something more productive!

  • Genghis says:

Current SPG Gold via Amex Plat. I’ll lose 9 nights of free breakfast and lounge access in Oct which is disappointing. I can’t decide how to play things now. I’ve been transferring MR points to SPG to Marriott as part of emptying account when churning as could get quite a lot of value. I don’t think I’ll do that for the next cycle coming up given uncertainty around the value I can get. What are others’ thoughts?

    • AndyR says:

Are you getting good value even though MR to SPG is 2:1 transfer ratio? I rarely find the redemptions make sense.

It sounds like you value brekkie abd lounge acccess so if Rob is right that we won’t get Marriott Platinum then probably not worth it.

      • Genghis says:

There were lots of very good value redemptions (not even when taking into account benefits etc) even at the 2:1 ratio. I earn enough avios

    • JamesB says:

Are those flexible stays? If so why not just email the hotel and ask if they will honour breakfast. Accirding yo a comment above Marriott VP confirmed that spg gold-marriott gold eill be hnonoured to platinum through the end of the year so perhaps there is still some hope.

      • Genghis says:

Flexible as booked on a TP. Will wait till dust settles and then drop them an email. Good idea.

        • Genghis says:

Emailed the hotel. They confirmed I will receive lounge access. Only time will tell whether this will actually be honored.

        • JamesB says:

Good result, hard to see why they will not honour it when you have it in writing. With a 9 night stay I suspect you might do better than just lounge access. If you have the Hilton cc I suggest you hand over that at check in, I always do when I am staying at another chain…then you can change it to your IHG card or whatever at check out!

  • Rike says:

Hi Rob, what about the transfer rate from Amex to SPG in the new program?its 2:1 now so will it be 2:3 afterwards?

  • PlaneSimple says:

On the whole I would agree. Although, having been Marriott Gold for a number of years now – and before my Amex Platinum days – I am quite disappointed about the lack of lounge access. On the years I did not requalify for Marriott Gold I used to buy back gold using my points. I only stopped doing this as Amex Plat gave me SPG Gold so no need to use the points. However, had I continued to do so I would now be getting lounge access. Rather disappointing as it is the biggest perk of the status for me and seems to be the mismatch as the two programmes have been joined up.

  • ringingup says:

Rob, how can you be so sure that SPG Gold people currently marched to Marriott Gold won’t get the new Platinum until next year?

    • AndyR says:

Yeah I’d like to know too. It may be that the higher elite status gets gets mapped across?

    • Rob says:

Amex gives SPG status, not Marriott status, so a logical reading is that your new tier runs off SPG. Could be wrong and I think if there is pushback here we will be ok. I will save £250 in Venice in August if I can Plat …..

      • RK says:

Ultimately Rob, you and others have made bookings for dates after August in Marriott hotels with the – not unreasonable – expectation that you will get certain benefits based on your existing status. I don’t think Marriott can reasonably withdraw these benefits before the end of your status year without massive pushback.

At the very least, they would have to allow refundable bookings to be refunded etc. But regardless, it looks pretty certain that Marriott are going to allow existing Marriott Golds to be moved to Platinum status in August, regardless of how they achieved their Marriott Gold status, as a one off for the period Aug-Dec.

        • JamesB says:

So you expect them to honour these benefits through 16 April 2019? Some will have booked yesterday for a year out following the same rationale. The way I see it, anything is a bonus and gratefully received so I hope we do keep it for the rest of the year at least.

  • JamesB says:

Rob, it has obviously been a very busy time for you over the last 24h so thanks for your efforts, much appreciated.

Two questions to put to Marriott please if you get the chance:

    1. When can we expect to see the new hotel category list?
    2. How will existing travel package cat 1-5 certificates that people already hold map to the new categories?

  • Talay says:

I can’t see how a paid for SPG Amex card can only deliver new Gold benefits, which are far worse than currently received ? This would be a hugely retrograde step.

What about the emergence of the new “non participating” hotels ? I just came back from a 12 night stay in the Ritz Carlton in Phulay Bay and not a baht of my THB 300,000 plus spend will make any difference to my account balance. At 10 points per $1 spent, that would normally credit me with 12 nights (at least, if not on a double promotion) and around 100,000 Marriott Reward Points, which would be good for a week’s stay in a 4/5* Marriott elsewhere in Thailand or 2 or 3 nights in London. Quite a loss there.

The loss of two of my major hotels from the Marriott brand means that I would not make 50 nights a year any longer for the new Platinum so retaining the lounge and breakfast benefits via the SPG Amex is a deal breaker in many ways.

I think overall is seems really quite fair but the devil is in the detail of course, which seems as yet unconfirmed.

    • JamesB says:

No, the amex platinum SPG gold benefit would remain the same in real terms, there would be no loss. Currently the SPG gold benefit is equivalent to 25 stays (minimum 25 nights), under the new scheme it will still be gold and still be equivalent to 25 nights. Were amex platinum to provide new marriott platinum that would be equivalent to 50 nights so amex would have to double the benefit which does not seem reasonable. The loss of benefits is all down to Marriott, nothing to do witn amex.

Btw Talay, if you are still regular to BKK in recent weeks Turkish, Garuda and Gulf have all been under £1150 exLondon.

      • Talay says:

Yes, still regular to BKK (just come back this week) but Garuda have me remembering their previous awful maintenance record and crashes, Gulf left me in Bahrain one night with no food or water and freezing cold and I don’t fancy the odds of getting kebabbed in Ankara what with the Syrian escalation flying Turkish.

I am petitioning Emirates for a renewal of a 20% off code they gave me some time ago with a promise to book 6 x first class seats. Not sure I’ll win that one though 🙂

Thanks for the heads up though.

        • JamesB says:

I get your point, when sonething colours your view of a carrier it can be hard to shake off. I have flew so many airlines over the years but the only two that remain totally unblemished in my mind are NZ and LH. Good luck with Emirates.

  • Roger says:

OT but anyone considering moving their stays to Hilton.

Has anyone managed to redeem Hilton £50 off £250 Amex offer on hotels which are not listed on the offer list? If so, and if I loose my free breakfast, might consider changing my stays to Hilton

    • JamesB says:

Hilton has been my first choice for three years now, status recognition is great IME.
Btw, the AA hotel conversion bonus is back but unfortunately travel packages are again excluded.

      • Roger says:

        Thanks, XcalX.

I was eagerly awaiting this AA 25% bonus offer.
        Will be on it soon.
I assume I still receive Category 1-5 certificate.

      • Roger says:

Where does it say Travel Packages are excluded? I cannot see any text to that effect other than max. points at 140K?

      • Roger says:

        Sorry found it.

“Members can convert multiple times with multiple Hotel Partners to earn bonus points. Conversions for hotel and air packages from Hotel Partners are not included for this offer. This offer is non-transferable and cannot be combined with any other offers. Conversions that take place before a member is registered for the offer will not count toward the offer”.

      • JamesB says:

I don’t know, I was just going on basis of a reply to my comment on the transfer bonus yesterday that said TP were excluded. As always, check t&c carefully, hope you get lucky.

    • Cate ⛱️ says:

Well no not really. If you check out Marriott’s twitter feed you can see since their announcement that Hilton have been trying to poach Marriott customers. Marriott and SPG have not come back with any responses to customers on their feed.

I think this announcement is really testing the market to see where the pressure points are and how much customer’s will swallow. I wouldn’t be surprised to see later in the year that some property awards and cash prices will trickle back down. Don’t forget Marriott this year have raised award categories and the outcome of that decision is still unknown. I think they realize that lounge and breakfast loss is a big sticky point hence they’re trying to head discontent off at the pass by now offering points on all stuff purchased and breakfast at resorts.

      My 50ps worth…

  • Richy says:

“However, unless a ludicrously huge number of hotels went into Category 9”
    Category 9 ?
