How to do an IHG Rewards Club redemption for 200 points to hit an Accelerate target

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Today is 2nd May, which means that the new round of IHG Reward Club’s ‘Accelerate’ promotion is in full swing.

IHG covers Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, Staybridge Suites, InterContinental and various other brands.  I wrote about the new version of Accelerate here and you can register via this link.

Every members gets different personalised targets which must be hit by 31st July.  However, a very common target this time was, as I got:

1,000 points – Earn When You Redeem

You earned your points, now use them! Redeem your points for anything, from a digital download to a Reward Night, and you’ll earn 1,000 bonus points.

IHG Rewards Club

How can you hit this target easily and cheaply?

Easy!  With a digital download via the IHG digital rewards catalogue.

Here is the UK digital rewards site (click).

There are over 6000 movies available, with recent titles such as Girl On A Train available for as little as 1300 points.

More interesting – if you are purely after an easy way to tick off the Accelerate target – are eBooks and eMagazines.  Click on the relevant tab on the digital rewards site and reorganise by price.

The cheapest eBooks are currently 200 points so, in my case, I’d make a ‘profit’ of 800 points on a redemption.  Here are a few examples at 200 points:

The eMagazines are more expensive, starting at 250 points, although you might do a better job of finding something you want to read.

The music selection cannot be sorted by price but seems to start at 300 points.

Whether or not you actually want any of the 200 points books, it is worth – if you are not planning to book a redemption between now and the end of July – downloading one if targeted for this on Accelerate.  You will make a small points profit and tick off one target.

I read this waking up in a (much better than expected) Holiday Inn Express in Paris. One of my targets chalked off already.

  • Nick says:

There are a few e-Magazine titles available for 0 points. I went for “All Paddlesports Buyers Guide” which has a single issue for 0 points. I don’t know if this’ll actually work as a “redemption” to get the Accelerate bonus of 1,000 IHG Reward points, but I’ve got plenty of time to do another redemption if it doesn’t credit.in the next few weeks.

    • Rob says:

I saw those but assumed it wouldn’t work ….

      • Nick says:

I’ll let you know Rob. I have subsequently received an email from IHG Rewards thanking me for my “redemption”, so it’ll be interesting to see if it does.

      • Alex Metcalfe says:

Worked for me last time round

    • testpie says:

Did this myself and worked like a treat – 1k points for 0 point eMagazine Redemption.

  • Genghis says:

Probably the one of the simplest methods but I rebooked a points stay yesterday and the 1k bonus posted straight away.

I also looked at rebooking a weekend cash stay but price difference was over $200. No thanks.

    • Liz says:

I looked at changing our 2 stays in Alice Springs in a couple of weeks time before and after our camping trip. The first night was more expensive and the 2 nights after the trip were fully booked. So I have lost out on several thousand points there. Also staying at the HIX in SIN next week but can’t change my booking to the HI on points break as I got my family to book in to the same hotel as us. Not doing so well here! ????

    Rob,
    Here’s one for 150 points:

    Reward Type: eBook
Title: Hayek, Mill and the Liberal Tradition

I haven’t got round to reading it yet….

    • Andy says:

I did that one as well!
Might be a bit dry but worth it for the points 😉

  • Anna says:

No bits but hotel related – Hilton. I am starting to wonder if Hilton are deliberately hiking their prices since they announced that status benefits won’t be awarded for third party bookings. I recently booked 4 nights in Rome through BA holidays at substantially less than the price Hilton wanted, but this isn’t restricted to holiday packages. For a 10 night hotel-only booking at the Hilton Northolme Seychelles, BA is quoting £1000 less than Hilton, and includes breakfast. It does look as though Hilton might be hoping that members will be so set on getting their status benefits that they won’t bother doing price comparisons any more but just book direct. When I see anomalies like this I do wonder what actual value status offers now!

    • Genghis says:

When was this announcement? I thought this has always been the case?
Never tried it and it has mixed reviews but BRG?

      • Anna says:

I thought that it had only been introduced in the last couple of years and that some hotels had been using their discretion in any case but had recently “tightened up”. I’ve only just got status so may be mistaken!

  • Anonymous says:

Does a points break redemption trigger the bonus?

  • John says:

Last time I booked a points stay, received the bonus before staying, then cancelled the stay. So no need to bother with “digital downloads” IMO.

  • Concerto says:

It sure does. That’s how I did this task last time. And even though I ended up canceling the Pointsbreak I didn’t lose the points.
