An update on how you can redeem Avios points on Flybe

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I was chatting with the Avios team about Flybe redemptions and a couple of things came up which were news to me and so may also be news to you.

I don’t think any of it was meant to be secret but there had been no real effort to communicate it widely.

Here’s the first thing:  there are now Avios seats made available on ALL Flybe flights.  This mirrors the guaranteed availability offered by British Airways in Economy on its own services.

Redeeming Avios on Flybe

Secondly, there is no longer any difference in availability between what it shown on avios.com and what is shown on ba.com.  This was not always the case in the past.

Thirdly, to clarify what we wrote last week, ba.com will tell you that you do not get a checked baggage allowance on a Flybe redemption.  This is not true – even though your e-ticket will also tell you that you do not get a free suitcase.  At the airport it should be visible to the check-in staff that you do actually have a 1 x 23kg baggage allowance.  The call centre staff have been reminded of this anomaly and should no longer be giving incorrect advice to anyone who calls to enquire.

Flybe redemptions are not always good value because of the taxes and charges, but their pricing can be high on some of the niche routes and – adding in the free suitcase – it may work out OK.

You can take a look at the Flybe route network here.  Details of their Avios partnership are here.

Please do other non-Amex alternatives for leaving MBNA. The only reason I use my card is when somewhere doesn’t take Amex. My monthly spend there is never even 1/4 of my Amex bill, but it’s not nothing (e.g., link my Curve card to it).

I was delighted to see Harry back on HFP yesterday – hope all goes well for his ongoing recovery. He has been missed.

Nice to see David Haye working at BA.

  • David says:

Sadly BA has really lost the plot. Dirty planes. Dreary decor in lounges. Poor food. Staff that don’t enjoy their jobs. Fiddling with points redemptions. Selling M&S sandwiches – muppets! Lying staff trying to get away with not paying compensation for delays (my actual experience) A daft way now of prioritising boarding making it by number rather than class and tier – presumably to try to make it easier but on a business clsss seat my wife was in group 2 whilst I was in group 1 because I had gold status – yet we were next to each other on the plane. Who dreams up these crazy ideas that just serve to annoy? I don’t think BA actually talk to customers before they do things. They are clearly not doing enough to match the service provided by other major airlines and are failing to innovate. If I didn’t have a lot of Avios to use up I would travel with others. Wake up, BA.

    • Arnold says:

First World problems alert! I’ve seen little wrong with the ba planes (and lounges) Uk/Fra/Dub. They are vehicles after all not 5 star rooms at The St Regis. By letting you board ahead of your wife you WERE being boarded my tier ie status! I dare say you’d have been able to simply join group 2 in any case, no crisis

      • Leo says:

I’m with Arnold on the boarding point – my status has dropped whilst partner’s still in place, so I’ll be in OP’s position. Your gold benefit allows you priority but you could choose to be in group 2. Technically I think I’m right that priority boarding was never a benefit extended to a travel companion, although it often went through on the nod. The new system just makes this unlikely.

      • the real harry1 says:

BA’s stated policy is that families/ groups travelling together can all board together at the highest boarding group level, ie in David’s example above, his wife (2) could have boarded at the same time as him (1).

‘It is possible that customers travelling together may receive different group numbers. In this case, please make your way to the gate where you will be able to board together.’

        • Sussex Bantam says:

Yes – and that actually worked for me last week on our way home from CPH when I took my whole family through as priority 1 using my gold card. The gate staff made an announcement before boarding.

There was no such announcement on the way out at LHR though.

        • the real harry1 says:

Yep at Easter going out to our place in the sun, my wife got upgraded from HBO to CE 1A @T-24 (first time I looked, might have been earlier I suppose), which was nice, seeing as she’s just a Bluey like the rest of us. So we 4 were on Avios redemptions and all boarded together with Business, no comments from the gate crew, they just waved us through. Not that I knew about the policy at the time, just chancing it 🙂

I swapped seats with her as she likes to chat with the kids, my 1C companion and I got though nearly a bottle of Champers each with a couple of brandy chasers lol and had a good old natter, which made the flight seem entertainingly quick.

        • ankomonkey says:

Welcome back TRH1! Hope you and your place in the sun are doing well!

        • Tilly says:

What i find annoying is people still queue up at both the priority and general boarding lanes. On Sunday night at YYZ I just couldn’t be bothered to stand in the queue and loitered around the gate area. When group 2 was called we just cut the line and all those (I presume in group 3) still waiting in line not moving I swear shot me some evil looks.

    • meta says:

On my last return flight – the outbound Group 1 was as big as group 3&4 and there was no-one in group 2. On the inbound they kept on calling for 10 minutes for Group 2. No one came forward. The guy waiting next too me was in Group 3 even though he was flying CE. I complained in a post-flight survey. Got 1k Avios as a result. This group boarding system cleary doesn’t work on some routes.

      • Liz says:

We were Group 1 boarding last week for our F flight to SIN. We left the CCR 45 mins before take off time. Arrived at the gate 30 mins before to find everyone had boarded already and we were the final stragglers to get on – so Group 1 boarding was wasted on us! Pushed off 15 mins early!

  • Memesweeper says:

BA responding to customer complaints is a positive thing! Not that things should have been allowed to get this bad of course…

  • Nick (not Arrogant Nick aka “The Original Nick”) says:

I agree with Nick. The comment should be removed – this type of language is wholly unacceptable as is purporting to be the Chairman of a rival airline. The word in question seems to appropriately describe the character of whoever wrote it.

    • The Original Nick says:

Hold on Nick, where do you get the idea from that I’m arrogant? I’ve been reading Robs site since day one and been commenting and having input for Rob for past posts probably well before you arrived on board so please explain. And not once have I been told that before. Plus, you don’t know me so keep your comments about people to yourself.

      • John says:

        Warning: Handbags!

      • Tilly says:

        Has Nick met Nick?

TON seemed nice enough to me in our very brief meet on Monday morning. Gentleman actually, let me off the plane first ☺

        • The Original Nick says:

Exactly Tilly, Nick has not met me. And to be quite honest I wouldn’t want to meet someone like him anyway.

        • the real harry1 says:

Just ignore. No arrogance demonstrated from what I have seen! 🙂

You just needed a way for people to differentiate between multiple Nicks. And you were one of the first Nicks.

          Simples lol

          the real & original harry1

    • ChrisC says:

Yes I couldn’t find an ‘alert mod’ button so just posted a reprimand and the post has now been removed. As was the post on the ‘VS afternoon tea thread’ where the same poster said he preferred the CCR over the VS Club House.

I’m not sure the real chairman of VS is an avid poster on HFP though I’m sure he’d be welcome!

      • Cate says:

I’m not sure an alert mod button would work on this site. Treating worldly adults like children isn’t a long term or even short term strategy given the demographic. With the occasional exception which Rob clears up, we’re more a What? -> Explain? -> Nope!-> your talking bildge
        -> type of group.

        • ChrisC says:

Did you actually see the word that had been posted? It was VERY offensive.

If you had you’d have wanted it removed pdq
