We went back – our new review of IHG’s Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam hotel (Part 2)

This is part two of my review of the Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam hotel, part of IHG Rewards Club. Part one of my Kimpton De Witt review, which you can find here, talks about the rooms and part two focuses on the public spaces.

As a reminder,  IHG is currently running a 5,000 bonus points offer exclusively for Head for Points readers who book at stay at the Kimpton De Witt in Amsterdam.  Click here for the special booking page on ihg.com.  You need to book by 31st July and stay between now and the end of this year.

IHG offered me a free night with dinner and breakfast when they heard that I was heading to Amsterdam for the inaugural Eurostar trip.  HFP paid all of its other expenses.

The House Bar

I didn’t have a drink in the bar, but Rob asked me to check if the bar was still very dark!  It is – at night.  It wasn’t during the day which is why this pictures turned out ok and you can actually see the pretty stools.

Dinner

The hotel restaurant Wyers is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can access the restaurant either from the hotel or the street and it seems to do a decent trade with locals as well as hotel guests.

The dinner menu had a good selection of meat and fish dishes which seemed like a mix of Dutch and American / Californian cuisine.

I had Ceviche Westside as a starter and Sucade (beef, Dutch spaetzle, veg) as my main. It was very good, the service was great and I would definitely come back to this restaurant even if I wasn’t staying at the Kimpton.

There was no breakfast buffet which I found a pleasant change.  The breakfast menu had a selection of egg dishes and every guest got fruit and yogurt as a ‘starter’.

I ordered the salmon with egg which cost an additional €3 if you have a ‘breakfast inclusive’ rate.  There was also a meat dish on the menu which was €3 extra.

I found it a little bit weird that I was handed the bill to sign before getting my food. My food was sitting on the counter for literally 5 minutes before it was brought to my table.

Lobby

I liked the lobby area which took up pretty much the whole ground floor.

There were various sitting areas:

…. and a small garden with swing chairs.

At 5pm every evening guests can get complimentary wine in the lobby area – this is a global Kimpton feature:

Next to the reception was a further sitting area with a fire place.

If you looking for a hotel which offers a pleasant environment for you to do some work or meet clients then Kimpton De Witt has a lot to offer.

The gym

There is one!  It didn’t feel cramped and there was a good amount of room between the machines.

What else?

Dogs are allowed and not charged extra.

Kimpton De Witt has a number of bicycles guests can use free of charge on a first come first served basis.

Here is a video of the Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam.  It is a bit longer than our usual hotel videos (although still not exactly a stretch at just over 3 minutes!) and gives a good feel for the hotel, especially the bedrooms.  You can subscribe to our YouTube channel via this page – this is the same link to visit if the video does not automatically appear below.

Conclusion

I’m glad that we went back to Kimpton De Witt as it definitely seems to have improved since Rob stayed at the hotel last year.

Obviously the design is a matter of taste and one other guest I talked to complained about the size of the room – but then again she was American and is used to bigger spaces.  Kimpton De Witt is no better and no worse than your typical high-end European city hotel in terms of room size.

The lobby area was very inviting and serving complimentary wine every evening is a pleasant way for the hotel staff to mingle with guests and get feedback.

Whilst the hotel is on a busy junction, the location has a lot going for it if you are coming into the city via Centraal Station, as most visitors do.  It is only a five minute walk and, in the other direction, a similar stroll to Dam Square.

Next up for Kimpton in Europe is a property in Paris.  There are also plans to convert some of the hotels in the Principal chain, recently bought by IHG, in the UK to the Kimpton brand so one may be coming to a city near you soon.

If you have plans to visit Amsterdam at some point this year, remember that IHG is currently running a bonus points offer for Head for Points readers. You will get 5,000 bonus points if you book a room at the Kimpton De Witt by 31st July and complete your stay by 31st December 2018 via this link.  Our main article describing the bonus points offer is here.

If you want to redeem for a stay, the hotel costs 50,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night.  This compares to the InterContinental Amstel which is now 60,000 points and in a slightly less accessible location.  You can also get a bargain at the brand new Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam City Hall which currently has an opening offer of just 20,000 points per night despite cash rates of around €200.

The main Kimpton De Witt website is here – but book via this page for the extra 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points.

While there’s nothing wrong with the hotel and I’ve but been there myself, my opinion from the photos etc is just meh.
    Wouldn’t go there myself I don’t think.

    • Matt says:

      The teacups are not meh!

      • Peter K says:

I did sort the cups but as someone who has some knowledge about vintage china they are not that special. They don’t look as nice as Pip studio ones either of you want more modern. Yes, better than normal hotel ones, but nothing to write home about.

        • Peter K says:

However, as with so many things in life, it’s horses for courses 🙂

    • Russell says:

Couldn’t disagree more. A lot of the time, photos of so-called “luxury” places just make me think that they are gaudy and tacky. This place looks absolutely lovely – I’d definitely be keen to stay (and I’ve never done yoga in my life).

      Horses for courses I guess.

  • Brian says:

So the service was great, but your food was sitting on the counter for literally 5 minutes? Not my idea of great service!

  • butzi says:

I have no idea why I should go for the Kimpton! It has nothing special to offer, the rooms are not as stylish as the hotel would want to be and the views are somewhat limited.
Charging for breakfast when it’s included in the rate..?
50.000 pts per night – that must be a joke. I am happy I stayed at the IC Amstel for 60′ pts – though, that hotel is also not the jewel it wants to be.

  • Marc says:

Thanks for the review. Will stay there in July on points (lets see if the 5000 extra points for Headforpoints will be added). 50k is a little steep but the location is just hard to beat (arriving at 7 something in the morning at the airport from NYC and just want to get to the hotel as easy as possible (and leave the next day via train too).
Lets see how early and early check in can happen 🙂

    • Rob says:

Very unlikely you’ll get the 5k on a reward night!

      • Marc says:

Checked the rates again and found a double points with free breakfast that works out better than points so instead of spending 50k points and pay for breakfast I spend less than 200 Euro with breakfast and get around 13k points (or so)
