Review: the Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam hotel revisited

This is our updated review of the Kimpton De Will hotel in Amsterdam.

As we mentioned yesterday, IHG is currently running a 5,000 bonus points offer exclusively for Head for Points readers who book at stay at the Kimpton De Witt in Amsterdam.  You need to book by 31st July and stay between now and the end of this year.

We promised to publish a review of the hotel today, and here it is.

You might have seen on Instagram that I stayed at the Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam hotel a few weeks ago.  You might have also remembered Rob’s not so great review of this hotel last summer when it had just opened and was suffering from teething troubles.

The Kimpton De Witt has now been open for a bit less than a year.  When we mentioned over lunch with IHG that Eurostar had given me a ticket for their inaugural train from London to Amsterdam they offered me a free stay in order to take a fresh look.  Here is my review:

Location

If you taking the new Eurostar service to Amsterdam or coming in from the airport by rail, this hotel is well located – especially if have a lot of luggage.  Kimpton De Witt is only a 5 minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station.  You may have stayed here when it was a Crowne Plaza.

I do agree with Rob’s original comment that the lack of signage outside the hotel is a problem and I almost walked past it. Had it not been for Rob’s review and the picture of the wall full of leaves, I would have probably walked past it.

I’m pretty sure they either got rid of the word ‘and’ before ‘breathe or someone nicked it ……

Check in

There were four receptionists on duty but I did have to wait a few minutes as it was quite busy when I arrived at 1:45pm.  The hotel knew I was going to be a bit early and my room was ready.

The receptionist showed me the downstairs areas with the complimentary tea making facilities, the bar and restaurant and told me about the free wine hour which takes place daily on the ground floor.

My room

My room was a King Deluxe on the fifth floor with the window facing another building.  Whilst I didn’t have a view, this also meant that I was not overlooking the busy road junction in front of the hotel.

The bed was comfortable – although I am lucky that this is usually a given when we review upscale hotels for HfP.  I should write a review one day of the 2* (overrated) hotel I stayed in once on a small island in Croatia ……

The desk was a good size, the TV had a couple of English channels and the shelf-wardrobe-thing (see picture below) was pretty stylish. I also appreciated the blue Frette bathrobes which were a cut above the usual.

I really liked the design of the chair by the window.

Rob was very upset, probably devastated, that he couldn’t find the trademark Kimpton yoga mat in his room a year ago, but it seems like the hotel has now added them.  What I wasn’t able to figure out was where to find the free yoga videos that were supposed to be on the TV ….

There was a Nespresso machine as well as a kettle in my room, along with some pretty tea cups.

The bathroom was a bit small with a rainfall shower inside the bathtub.

There was not enough room for my make up bag and, as the light in the bathroom wasn’t that great anyway, I did my make up in the room.

I liked the toiletries by Dutch brand Marie-Stella-Maris which were paraben and silicone free.

I did get a tour of the property and saw a couple of other room types.

The Twin Deluxe had two single beds.  As you can see in the picture below the design including furniture was the same as in my room.

The Kimpton De Witt building is very interesting. There are two 17th century houses incorporated in the structure.  One of these houses had been turned into the House Bar.  The other one which is located in the courtyard is now a bookable two bedroom house with access from the main hotel building.

The Little House has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a guest toilet as well as a dining and sitting area.  Fun fact: This house was the childhood home of Dutch playwright, P.C. Hooft.

Penthouse De Witt

The penthouse is where Rob stayed last year and his review is here.  This used to be the executive lounge when the hotel was a Crowne Plaza.  He found it good value for money for a couple looking to treat themselves, especially if the weather is good and you can appreciate the outdoor terrace which also has seating.

In part two I will look at the public spaces including the restaurant.   Part two of our Kimpton De Witt review, which you can find here, includes a short video of the hotel.
