New IHG promotion: get 10% off points & cash redemptions in the UK and Ireland

IHG Rewards Club has launched a new promotion for ‘points and cash’ reward bookings in the UK and Ireland.

If you book before 27th July, IHG Rewards Club members can save 10% on the cash part of a points & cash redemption.

“Points & cash” redemptions let you, as the name suggests, book a redemption room with a mix of points and cash.  It is the ideal solution for any IHG Rewards Club member who finds that they do not have enough points for the room they want to book.

You can redeem as few as 5,000 points with a cash payment on top.  Importantly, the cash option is VERY good value on a ‘pence per point’ basis.  You may even want to use ‘points and cash’ even if you do have enough points in your account, because it is good value and allows you to preserve some points for a future redemption.

Here is some example pricing.  A reward night at the Crowne Plaza in Belfast would usually cost:

25,000 points or

20,000 points plus £37 or

15,000 points plus £60 or

10,000 points plus £82

Even without this special offer, you will see that this is a decent deal.  If you take the 10,000 points option then you are technically ‘buying’ 15,000 points for £82, which is just 0.55p per point.

During this 10% off promotion, it is an even better deal.   You can book the room above for 10,000 points plus £74, a saving of £8.  This means you are “paying” 0.5p per point. Compared to buying the points at full price from IHG this works out a lot cheaper unless there is a “buy points” offer running.

Here are the rules:

Members need to be logged in to see the special rates when booking a points redemption

The offer is only valid on stays in the UK and Ireland

You must book by 27th July for stays until 30th September

If you cancel a “points and cash” redemption, you do not get the cash refunded.  Instead, the points equivalent of the full redemption is put back into your account.  Going back to our Belfast example, if you book the Crowne Plaza for 10,000 IHG Rewards Club points plus £74, and later cancel, you will receive back 25,000 points and no cash.

The special booking page for this offer is here.

Like all “too good to be true” deals, the case of the Crown Plaza in Belfast is a classic. It is miles away from the centre of Belfast, and is simply why it is “such good value”. You would not use it for a weekend break in Belfast without car hire – and then you have to pay for parking in Belfast or you would need to use taxis every time to get around, thereby negating any saving on your accommodation – the so called Ryan Air effect!!
The is a “much loved” Park Plaza from where you can walk everywhere downtown, but look at the price which reflects its edge of city centre location!

We weren’t recommending the hotel itself!

    • ee says:

We managed it when it was on points breaks and yes it was about 15 min walk to a bus (in either direction along the main road) but we survived and that was in winter. I really liked the hotel. As plat we got a club upgrade including lounge which was very modern and I seem to remember the drinks and nibbles were decent too.

  • Genghis says:

Given I’m willing to sell at 0.4p / IHG and IIRC Rob’s own valuation is 0.4p-0.5p, I don’t think this pricing is decent at all.

  • RussellH says:

There is a Crowne Plaza in Dublin and another in Dundalk, both of which are effectively offering 10 000 points for €51 (or were a couple of days ago). => 0.45p per point.

PS How do you sell points at 0.4p?? (or any other price).

  • TripRep says:

Just made a short notice Hilton DoubleTree booking, place must be nearly full.

    Cash price £350

    Points 20k.

That is the power of being in the points game…

  • pauldb says:

Looking into this a little more, it’s quite easy to find 20k for £81 trade offs, effectively 0.4p per point. Try London on a quiet night and somewhere with a low-ish rate will be offered at that exchange.
At the level, arbitraging into any 20k hotel for
    £81 makes sense.
