Etihad is offering you a 10% World Cup discount

Etihad is offering a special 10% World Cup consolation discount to anyone booking before 15th July.

You need to fly from Manchester or Heathrow, in any class, between 1st September and 31st March 2019.

You need to use promo code WORLDENG on the Etihad booking site here.  Note that the discount only applies to the base fare, not taxes, and so will have a small overall impact on Economy tickets.  Business fares will probably see an 8%-ish discount on the gross fare.

Blackout dates apply: no outbound travel between 10 December to 24 December 2018 and no inbound travel between 1 September to 12 September 2018 and 29 December 2018 to 13 January 2019.

Multi-city bookings do not qualify.

In addition, if you are not already an Etihad Guest member, you can sign up here and receive 500 bonus miles.

Your best option to maximise your miles when paying is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold.  This offers double points – 2 per £1 – when you when you book flight tickets directly with an airline.  Our review of Amex Gold is here.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2024)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

Do you like my tight sweater?

  • YNWA says:

I’m travelling back to Manchester on 29 Octet. How can I tell if the plane has QSuites?

  • mo says:

Along with 10% off, you should have probably written about EY starting to charge for seat selection.

    • Rob says:

I think most UK residents would be more surprised they weren’t doing it already, given BA, Virgin, Norwegian etc …

  • Helen says:

How can I tell if the flight has QSuites?

    • Rob says:

I am guessing, as Qatar is not promoting QSuite, that it will be scheduled as the old model but might (or might not) get switched at some point as more QSuite A350 planes get delivered.

    • Hugh says:

I use the expert flyer seat alerts app.

  • Roger says:

Is keeping one card (say any AMEX, no fee card) for long term – years is still valid for credit rating, customer relation etc.?

    • Rob says:

Yes. Makes sense doesn’t it? Someone with no credit cards over 12 months old must look less secure than, say, me who shows an Amex since 1999.

    • John says:

Doesn’t have to be an Amex. Also a long-standing current account probably has similar effects.

      • Anna says:

Presumably that’s why they ask how long you’ve been with your bank on the Amex application form.

  • Judge says:

Does AirPortr no longer cover London City?

  • Richmond says:

Yesterday, I got change of time for flights on MAN-AKL, but didn’t notice change of planes. My seats look the same, probably similar setup to previous plane. I would love to get refitted 777L on DOH-AKL route.

    • Richmond says:

OK, got 350-900 on return DOH-MAN but got the same seats and plane looks identical inside.

    • Hugh says:

Same for me. I got an alert from CheckMyTrip but didn’t notice the change of plane, but looking today it has changed. Sadly not showing Qsuites but I will keep checking as at least there is now a slim (probably still very slim) chance that we might get Qsuites.

A lot of people have reported upgrade vouchers dropping into their accounts this week, so MBNA seemed to have triggered a lot even when the spend target was not hit. For clarity, under NO scenario whatsoever will spend after 7th July count towards one.

    • Andy says:

It hadn’t occurred to me to take a look at my account before posting which seems a bit silly in hindsight since the vouchers went in on July 6th.

      • Roberto says:

And the virgin miles due for the billing period up to the 6th of July hit my account today too…
