O/T One to watch (EC261) – are in-house strikes – as opposed to (say) ATC strikes – extraordinary circs or not? CAA says not, so compo is payable:

Thanks for Gatwick reminder Rob – I just cancelled a booking I made a few weeks ago and rebooked it, saving 17% off the original booking. Nice ! I was annoyed that the Gatwick booking went up a lot between my planning exercise on a wednesday to making the booking on a friday….this fixes it !

  • BA-Flyer says:

I already have the Amex Gold charge card, and the companion Gold credit card. I want to cancel these before the end of my first year (Aug 4th), and get the Platinum card. Any thoughts on which is the best route? The upgrade from Gold requires a lower spend but offers 10k fewer points. Does the upgrade still trigger a credit search?
Any benefit to being referred instead, or can I refer myself?
    Thanks.

    • Matt says:

You’ll need to wait 6 months between cancelling your Amex Gold and applying for Amex Plat if you want to earn the sign-up bonus. You can upgrade to Amex Plat now and 20k MR bonus after spending £1k.

      • BA-Flyer says:

What if I apply for the Platinum whilst I still hold the Gold cards, and only cancel Gold once my Platinum application is approved?

        • Matt says:

You won’t earn another sign up bonus until your MR account has lapsed for 6 months. If you don’t want to wait 6 months before holding Amex Plat you should upgrade and earn the 20k MR it’s a great deal IMO.

        • the real harry1 says:

But does upgrade Gold credit —> Plat actually work?

        • Matt says:

They said they have the gold charge card.

        • the real harry1 says:

They said they have both, but point taken. Just wanted to re-ascertain that credit card upgrade is a no

        • Genghis says:

@TRH1 the old companion gold credit card is different to the new gold credit card

Remember the Virgin Life Insurance offer from a few weeks back? Got called up today to confirm my data & the numbers, looks like there is no problem with my 1 quid something policy. Curious to see if the miles post.

    • AndyGWP says:

I’ve had a call / voicemail today too (not listened to it yet)… they took the payment out earlier this month though so I assumed everything is fine!

      • Genghis says:

They just want to check if all OK. Also asked if I want the will service. I asked to be removed from all marketing and was told I was already. The guy didn’t seem to grasp the welcome call was marketing in substance.

        • the real harry1 says:

I got my call way back – must be nearly a month ago or at least 3 weeks. Left the telesales guy in no uncertain terms (politely) never to call us again.

Just routine call that they think is ostensibly customer-friendly ie is everything OK? etc – but most of us don’t. Why disturb my peace with a nonsense call (and maybe try to sell me something else?)

        • Alan says:

          Haha agreed – same here.

  • Stoneman says:

OT: Any suggestions for a mid budget (£200 a night) hotel in Tokyo. Have Amex Plat so anywhere that will give me a few perks is preferable.

  • Mark2 says:

Just got offered although the account was closed months ago.
    Nothing from Nationwide yet.

  • pablo says:

My last one in early July never tracked. Wasted £300 that could have gone towards an Amex sign up bonus. I contacted Visa offers through their online form but never heard anything back.

  • Wally1976 says:

I haven’t got this on First Direct or Nationwide – probably because I maxed out both last time paying water bill and Council tax via PayPoint :-).
