Habtoor’s three Marriott-managed Dubai hotels are rebranded by Hilton

We recently wrote how the St Regis, Westin and W hotels at Al Habtoor City in Dubai were to be deflagged on 31st July.

From yesterday, Hilton is now operating the hotels – although I doubt the signs have been changed yet.

The St Regis becomes ‘Habtoor Palace Hotel, part of the LXR Hotels & Resorts collection’ – the hotel site is here

The W becomes ‘V, part of Curio Collection by Hilton’ – the hotel site is here

The Westin becomes Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City – the hotel site is here

LXR is a new Hilton brand.  It is designed to be a home for independent luxury hotels who want to join the Hilton ‘system’ whilst still remaining outside Hilton control.

There are now THREE Hilton brands for independent hotels:

LXR – for five star properties

Curio – for four star properties (Ibiza reviewed here, Boston reviewed here, Hamburg reviewed here)

Tapestry – for three star properties (Washington DC reviewed here)

I am very positive about these moves because they are attracting very good hotels.  I was very keen on The Graham in Washington.  We were also back at the Reichshof in Hamburg last month which is much improved on its chaotic opening which I reviewed.

Whether this can be enough to save the Al Habtoor City hotels, which suffer from a blighted location next to Sheikh Zayeed Road – see photo above – and chronic over-development, is a different question.

Completely off topic but can I use my Tesco visa debit card to pay off my American Express and still earn 1 point for £8 in spend?

    • Rob says:

Unlikely as will be classes as a financial institution. You can pay HMRC and I think some ISA providers and the like slip through.

    • Geoff says:

Try some out and let us know what you find. Will be of interest. Thanks

    • Matt says:

No, you won’t get clubcard points doing that directly. I tried it a while back.

  • Jonathan says:

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to transfer SPG points between family members at the same address please?

    • Relaxo says:

You need to find the tab for “Redeem & Transfer Points”. Then click on “Other options”. Then “Pass the starpoints”

  • Martin says:

I had an Amex to SPG transfer pending that appeared in my SPG account a couple of days ago. If you have one pending it might still go through before 17 August.

  • Martin says:

I’ve also just had 3 one-hour meetings at a Marriott hotel post. Cost was £50 each. That has got me 30 Marriott elite nights and pushed my combined Marriott + SPG lifetime nights to over 750. I’m already SPG Lifetime Platinum so should now be Lifetime Platinum Premier in the merged programme.

    • KevMc says:

Sounds like a great strategy to shortcut to Plat – I will have to keep this one in mind. Thanks Martin!

      • Rob says:

There are rumours of this benefit changing from 18th August to restrict you to one qualifying meeting per year. I know someone who did a handful of meetings at £50 out at Heathrow recently to get up to Platinum before the changes – it was cheaper than doing a mattress run although more fiddly, and he had to chase to get the night credits.

        • Martin says:

I did them at Leicester Marriott. Joshua there is fully up to speed on how to get Rewarding Events to post correctly and he does it the following day. To get the £50 rate you have to use their meetings-by-the-hour plan which is only available for a meeting within 24 hours. It’s £50 for first hour and £25 for each additional hour. You get free parking and tea/coffee for all attendees.

  • Simon Parker says:

On the topic of MR transfers, is it a good idea to hold off on transferring to my BAEC account, in case BA have another transfer bonus, like last year?

    TIA – Simon

    • Rob MC says:

There wasn’t an amex BA bonus. Hasn’t been one for a few years.

    • Relaxo says:

No Amex bonus. You are confusing it with the bonus for converting hotel points to Avios. So if you dont have immediate use for them …maybe convert your Amex points to Marriott or other hotel scheme & then wait for bonus to convert to Avios.

  • Andy says:

Is the SPG/Amex delay a likely reason why my wife’s 11,000 SPG points from her SPG Amex left her Amex account on the 14th July but still hasn’t posted to her SPG account?

    • Pangolin says:

I got a notification on the SPG Amex account page that points sweeps would be delayed until September as a result of the upcoming changes.

      • will says:

It was a long shot but I was hoping for the SPG points to get tripled up on the 1st and then sent over prior to Aug 18 and then tripled up again.
        Can’t win them all!

  • Benylin says:

Upgraded to PLAT Charge via “the link” yesterday. Accepted, my app has changed to PLAT, can I start refering people and earn 18k? Or have to wait for my new card to arrive first?

  • N says:

Any way to book Starwood hotels at 60k MR per night if I don’t have the points available right now? Or is it only Marriott hotels that I can book if I don’t have the points?

    • Rob says:

It is all one scheme post 18th. However there is no guarantee that Marriott will allow the ‘book without having the points’ feature to continue. It would be a bit unfair if all the 60k rooms were booked by people who currently have no idea how they will get the points but hope something turns up, only to cancel them next year when anyone who picks them up later will have to pay up to 105k.

      • Russ says:

They could always implement prior to the 18th a ‘by special invitation’ to those who have TP certs. I don’t know anything though.
