Aer Lingus is launching two new long-haul routes, bookable on Avios

Aer Lingus has announced two new routes to North America.

It will fly direct from Dublin to Montreal and Minneapolis–Saint Paul from Summer 2019.

Full details are on the Aer Lingus website here.

Montreal is due to start on 8th August 2019 with an Airbus A321neo. Minneapolis–Saint Paul launches on 8th July 2019 and will be operated by a Boeing 757 aircraft.

Montreal is, I think, the first route to be confirmed with a new Airbus A321neo long-range version.  Aer Lingus has 12 of these aircraft on order for delivery between 2019 and 2022.

They are capable of flying non-stop to the US and Canadian eastern coasts.  What isn’t yet clear is how passengers, especially business passengers, will react to using a single-aisle aircraft normally found on short-haul routes.  The business class will be fully flat.

Both of these flights will be available for Avios redemption.  This HfP article explains the rather complex process for redeeming Avios on Aer Lingus.  You CAN still book via avios.com even though your avios.com account may have been closed – this HfP article explains how.

I flew to Hawaii on all single isle aircraft, Lcy-jfk-lax-hnl.A318/A321/B757
Personally I preferred it to similar distance on a wide body, I am a bit of a plane nerd though.

  • Optimus Prime says:

OT – wife has free Virgin card, applied for the other one and has been rejected because she already has a credit card issued by Virgin Money.

I guess she should call them up and see if they can split her credit across both cards?

  • Nate1309 says:

OT, am I right in thinking booking reward flights opens at 1am at the moment? And given the choice would you fly CW on a 747 or A380? It my parents first CW flight and want them to enjoy it.

    • George says:

Not sure about the opening time; but given a choice (and able to select seats) I’d pick A380 upper deck for slightly more space – the planes are newer (by 10+ years) which you would hope means less broken seats. Otherwise, there’s some geek value to the 747 which will be phased out in the not so distant future – but for someone who hasn’t flown business before either will be a real experience.

Assume you’re not flying NY route because I’ve never seen an A380 on that route but if you are then 747 are legacy fleet crew which are very good.

    • john says:

They open at midnight GMT, so when in summer time, like now, its 1am.

    • Lyn says:

Good luck with finding the flights! If it is your parents’ first CW flight I’m sure they will enjoy it , and San Francisco, whatever you can find. If you can only get the 747, do try and get seats on the upper deck for them.

  • Ian M says:

    OT: Amex referrals…

Has something changed with referrals? I wanted to refer someone for the SPG Amex from my Amex Plat, but it seems you can now only refer someone for one of the 3 charge cards? Before the person applying just needed to click on ‘View our other Cards’ and the other options were there, now it’s only showing the Gold and Green Charge cards

Turn off Adblocker/ghostry etc or try another browser.

    • Genghis says:

I noticed this the other day on multiple browsers…

    • mike says:

yeap, unfortunately I think this loophole has been plugged for good, which is a real blow to the hobby. if anyone finds a workaround please share

      • Mark2 says:

Glad I got my wife’s BAPP a week ago.

        • mike says:

I am due my next spg/ba churn cycle next week, so am absolutely gutted about this, it is gonna cost me at least 90.,000 MR points

        • Shoestring says:

happened in the summer & got switched back on after 3 days

        • Shoe string says:

The good news is: senior Amex Brighton staffers are heavily bonused on new sign-ups, not just a/c profitability 🙂

        • Louie says:

That’s a bit of a disaster; this is my main source of MR points these days. I do hope it comes back ASAP.

        • Louie says:

Looking further, it seems Plats referring to Gold only get 9,000 MR points now instead of 18,000 and Plat referring to Green only get 5,000 points.

      • jonny says:

when it stopped working the plat referral loop during the summer how long was it for?

    • New Card says:

Still waiting on 18k of referral points from a new sign up a week ago…

      • Chris says:

I had this exact issue the other day, turned off ad blocker and the button appeared. Try from your mobile?

  • Tom H says:

OT- Anyone planning on visiting Platinum House tonight or over the next few days? I’m thinking of calling in tomorrow morning.

  • mike says:

Has anyone else noticed that this new poster “Shoestring” sounds suspiciously like Harry? He must be on day-release.

    • Danny says:

Yes definitely it’s Harry and on his 5th aliases in as many years ????

      • mike says:

i have a mutual acquaintance (who lives in Bristol), I understand harry was sent down for 6 months on 2 counts of inciting racial hatred, glad to see he is out, and hope he has learnt his lesson.
