How to book low cost flights on Avios points to Montreal with Aer Lingus

We told you last week that Aer Lingus is launching Montreal and Minneapolis for Summer 2019.

What I didn’t spot at the time is that Aer Lingus is NOT fudging Avios pricing to Montreal.

This is what I mean.  Dublin to Boston is 2,993 miles.  This was a generally agreed fact at Aer Lingus when it was a British Airways Executive Club partner.

However, when Aer Lingus launched its Avios programme 18 months ago, Boston mysteriously moved.  Aer Lingus suddenly decided that it was over 3,000 miles from Dublin.  This meant that the cost of an Avios redemption in Business Class on a peak date jumped from 75,000 Avios to 120,000 Avios.

Dublin to Montreal is 2,973 miles.  And, for once, Aer Lingus is not disputing this fact.

Montreal, which starts on 9th August 2019, is correctly pricing up in the cheaper Avios Zone 4.  This means that an Economy redemption using Avios is just 10,000 Avios each way off-peak and 12,500 Avios each way peak.  Taxes will vary depending on whether you book on avios.com (£188 return) or with BA via the telephone (should be under £100).

A Business Class redemption to Montreal will be just 31,250 Avios each-way off-peak and 37,500 Avios each-way peak.  That said, Aer Lingus only usually makes one Business Class seat available and even that isn’t yet showing for Montreal.  You can book Economy redemptions however.

You can read more about the new Montreal and Minneapolis routes on the Aer Lingus site here.

Is it possible to book Aer Lingus reward flights on Iberia with the promo avios?

    • swhostring says:

Doubtful as not listed as a partner, might be possible with a phone call, would be non refundable, return flights only. If IB don’t play ball you can move the Avios to your Aer Lingus avios.com a/c or BAEC to book tickets (at risk of a negative IB a/c after Dec 1st), so try booking thru IB first.

Love Montreal so might use this as an excuse for my first ever trip to Dublin. For anybody else heading out there I recommend finding the time to visit Quebec City too, a rather quaint place that seems to slip most people’s radar. Close enough to Montreal for a day trip.

    • RussellH says:

Although I have not been to either since 1977, I agree fully with the thoughts on Québec City.

    • @mkcol says:

When we went to Quebec to get married in Feb 2010 I seem to recall the drive from Montreal being ~4 hours so quite a day trip if you do plan on doing it.

      • Mark2 says:

Recommend breaking journey at Fairmont Chateau Montebello for visit to Parc Omega.
When we went to Montreal a few years ago it seemed to have really gone down from previous visits, but Quebec City still really great, but not Hilton.

      • BJ says:

About 2.5-3h but then you have to add on the time to get out of Montreal depending on traffic.

  • Nichola says:

O/T – Does anyone know what the platinum Amex travel offer is at the moment? With my gold I’ve got £50 off a £200 spend. Thinking about upgrading but want to time it right

    • Leo says:

I got £200 on £600 spend but there’s no guarantee you will receive this if you upgrade. From reports here it appears to be targeted and requests to have the offer added to cards have been refused by Amex.

    • swhostring says:

It’s targeted & needs activating first, so if it’s not in your Plat Offers, you can’t use it

  • Paul says:

Rob, $1000 for 200,000 IHG points is around £0.00385 per point. Is that right?

If it is correct then it makes many 20,000 hotels good value and brings a 70,000 IC down to £269.

The points cash trick I don’t think is as generous but you thoughts welcome.

    • Rob says:

No, not quite as generous at standard rates and technically against scheme rules.

      • Olly says:

I was tempted with this but then I remembered Hilton recently put up the amount of points per night of their reward nights shortly after. I wonder if this is what IHG will be doing?

  • Rash says:

OT: Any recommendations for hotels in Venice? We’re a family of 4 (2 kids under 8) travelling in June.

    • BJ says:

What price range? With points or cash?

      • Rash says:

Nothing too pricey as I suspect we will be out most of the day, I’ve got a bunch of Marriott points that I would be happy to use if needed – if not then cash.

        • BJ says:

If you want to save those points and use cash then have a look at Hotel Plaza next to Venezia Mestre rail station. Standard prices are around £100 a night with breskfast before any discounts etc you can get from likes of hotel dotcom etc. Train to Venice is under 10 minutes and you can take bus too. More easy to find decent dinner at decent price in Mestre too when you are finished your sightseeing.

    • Rob says:

Look at my JW Marriott review. Get a junior suite as we did. Cipriani is the best family option arguably. Keep off the main island.

    • Brian says:

Get an Airbnb. Airbnb is just perfect for places like Venice, where the price of hotels is disproportionate to what you get. You can easily get a decent-sized apartment with at least 2 bedrooms in a great location for under £200, . You may not necessarily want to cook, but it’s good to have the option. A much better way to experience Venice than a hotel, I’d venture.

  • I A says:

Can a BA rewards voucher be used to book aer lingus to Montreal and would the trip to Dublin be worth the saving from flying BA direct from London

  • Graham Walsh says:

OT Any 3rd party hotel promo’s like the previous Kaligo/BA one? Did nicely out of that over 2 bookings. Need to book Radisson/Quality again in Oslo. I’ve got an offer from Rad for he below. Not sure if targeted. Rather take 24k avios like the last offer.

Register today and start earning double Elite qualifying nights and stays at any of our more than 1,100 properties worldwide.
This exclusive offer is available to you for stays booked and completed now through December 28, 2018.

  • Richard Hurley says:

    Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place but did not know where to write it.

Has anyone else had trouble with the points awarded from the IHG Credit card. I am a platinum member and always get double point but in August I only got single points. September is once again showing double.

So far I have written to IHG and the Credit card and have had replies from 6 different people saying they will look in to it, but nothing happens. The customer service is terrible.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

    • @mkcol says:

Yes similar experience as yours re: appalling customer service.
      Creation are the worst.

    • Genghis says:

Sorry – you’re complaining about being awarded more points than you’re entitled to? Or the double points for spending abroad is not coming through? A few months ago my wife’s points didn’t come through on time and I put in a missing points claim with IHG and Creation and all sorted in a few days. Then last month there were issues with everyone’s points.

      • Simonbr says:

+1. Fillng out a Missing points claim online with IHG was more effective than several phone calls to Creation and IHG last month.
