BOOK NOW: 165 new PointBreaks hotels for just 5,000 to 15,000 IHG Rewards Club points

IHG Rewards Club (the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc group) has just published its new list of heavily discounted PointBreaks redemptions.

You can book these hotels for stays until 30th November.

These hotels are bookable NOW via ihg.com.  Popular hotels will use up their allocation of reduced price rooms quickly, so book soon if you are interested.  As with all IHG Rewards Club reward nights, you can cancel without penalty at any time and get your points back.

PointBreaks has changed …..

Historically all PointBreaks rooms cost a flat 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night.

This was a great deal, except for the teeny tiny fact that the selection of hotels had been getting progressively worse for the last couple of years.  If you were looking for a good deal in a major tourist centre then you were going to be disappointed – although it was handy if you wanted a weekend break in Doncaster.  This has now changed.

The 165 hotels on the list below are priced at between 5,000 and 15,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night.  In general the quality of hotels included has gone up since the 5,000 point cap was removed, although at the end of the day it always depends on how the list fits around your travel plans.

What are the highlights?

Not surprisingly the better deals are at the 15,000 points level.

  • The QO in Amsterdam, an unbranded IHG hotel, looks interesting as does Crowne Plaza Potsdamer Platz in Berlin
  • Given we are heading into high season there, Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi would be a cheap Middle East break.  There is also a Muscat option.
  • In London, the Holiday Inn Express Wandsworth is surprisingly central although not on the tube.  There is a National Rail station a couple of minutes away and it is a short taxi ride into Battersea or up to Kings Road for entertainment.
  • The Venice hotel is NOT in central Venice so I’d be a little wary of that one
  • The two St Petersburg options look good although Russian visas are always painful to get
  • We reviewed the brand new InterContinental Ljubljana here and at 15,000 points it must be worth trying out a new European city if you’ve never been to Slovenia
  • InterContinental Kiev is also on the list

Booking

PointBreaks availability is limited so book ASAP if you are interested.

You can book via the IHG PointBreaks page here or via the standard booking page here.

You are able to book these hotels for dates up to 30th November.

You allowed a maximum of two bookings per individual hotel. Each booking can be for as many nights as you want.  Remember that if you attempt to amend your booking later by dropping a night or two the whole booking may reprice at the full rate.

Having made good use of the Hilton and IHG schemes for the past decade, I’m now doing local. I’ve had some cracking hotels in Eastern Europe at about a third the cost of the big players. I’m all for maintaining BA Gold – but the hotel stuff – I’ve visited every Hilton with a lounge in Europe. Apart from the 3x Doubletrees in Poland, and the 2x Hilton’s in Prague… what’s the point? Hilton and comped Gold status keeps the northerners happy of course… as if they are representative of proper travellers…

  • Bach says:

OT (no bits) – I’m 80 points short of reaching Carte Blanche, with my loyalty year ending mid-October and a trip scheduled just after that… I don’t suppose anyone has experience negotiating with Eurostar given the point system is quite recent? Any other option to get status points (don’t suppose MR points count towards status?)?

    • tartan says:

Not had any experience of hangling on Carte Blanch I’m afraid as I’ve only just reached that level. If you only need 80 points then have you considered a quick return trip from Ebbsfleet to Calais. There are tickets in mid October for £33 out in the morning and £59 back later that evening. You get £30 off for being a Carte Blanche member so it will cost you £62. If you’re paying to keep status though, it might be worth just considering the Platinum Amex as that gets you lounge access

      • Rob says:

They did deals for “a couple of hundred” people who felt they were disadvantaged by the new Club Eurostar system when it launched, so I think the call centre may be willing to deal if you are very close. No promises of course and perhaps a £62 day trip is easier.

    • Bach says:

Thanks both – I think I will give it a try asking, especially with a trip coming couple of weeks after, might work… I guess if not I’ll let it go as I have Amex Plat anyway and Business Premier tickets with work, so not so critical and probably not worth the day trip…

  • David says:

That’s me booked the Heathrow Crowne plaza for an overnight. I also have the new (unopened yet) T4 CP for the same night at 30k points.
Advice on which to keep appreciated – fly into T5 and out of T3, so some travel will happen whatever.

    • Neal says:

The London Heathrow CP is a tip. Stayed on 21st September and had to email IHG to complain regarding a non-functioning lock (basically anyone could push the door and get in). Not worth the 15K points IMH.

      • David says:

Thanks. Will probably cancel then. Might hold it open until I hear how new one is doing, but not going to stay at a dump if I can avoid it.

        • Ian M says:

I stayed at the Heathrow CP last month. I wouldn’t stay there again. Maybe I’ve had a bad run with CPs but I’m still yet to stay in a good one

      • Lady London says:

+ it’s difficult to get to. It’s just on the other side of the M4 on the road up to Stockley Park (I hope I’m remembering correctly). There is transport but it’s fiddly.

I wouldn’;t normally suggest to someone to prefer something that’s a complete unknown quantity, like the T4 hotel that’s due to open, to any known quantity but I suspect it’s not possible for the T4 hotel to be worse. Crowne Plaza is not that bad it’s just the location and there are a number of other nicer Crowne Plazas. You could for example check out the new one at Hanger Lane – I believe as a new opening the regular rate on that is quite OK for what/where it is. it’s also possible to access by public transport from Heathrow although it’s further away. The HIX in West Ealing is also quite good.

        • Lady London says:

PS pretty sure there’s also a brand spanking new Holiday Inn in the centre of Ealing near Ealing Broadway station (for Heathrow Connect train service) and practically next to the town hall right in the middle of the shopping area. Haven;t got time to check right now but suspect opening rates will be very reasonable.

        • Alan says:

I’ve gone for the HIX T4 (same building as new CP) – for a quick overnight stay I couldn’t see the points in paying more points for the CP, esp with the normally pretty mediocre status recognition provided by IHG…

          • Rob says:

We are going to see the new CP / HIX T4 complex in the next fortnight so there will be a review of both within the next 3 weeks.

        • David says:

Alternative would be the tried and tested Doubletree, but the new CP piqued my interest. We arrive T5 at 9pm, and leave T3 around lunchtime (DEN).

      • Rob says:

Fantastic pool (best of any Heathrow hotel I think). I got Club access as a Spire last year. Decent food options. Rooms need a refurb.

      • RussellH says:

Not my experience at all, though it was nearly two years ago. We booked a day-stay there for somewhere to sleep after what we expected to be (and was) a ghastly overnight from MIA in a cramped 747 in BA Economy.
We booked the CP because a) it was cheaper than the Renaissance (even though much less convenient)ly located b) because my partner needed an IHG stay to complete her Accelerate target. True, we saw nothing of the hotel except reception, lifts and the room, but the room was excellent, I thought, spacious, with two huge beds, a very decent bathroom too. Reception staff were efficient and friendly. The hotel’s real downside is its location.

  • Paul Milligan says:

I can’t say that there is anything on the list that fits with my travel plans or inspires me to travel. Hanoi is just a bit far even for 15000 a night.

    • Michael Jennings says:

Mendoza is a lovely place, too, but booking Argentina for November just to take advantage of this is a bit beyond me.

  • Lady London says:

Hum. Hotels that used to be 5,000 are now 10. There are a few interesting ones in the 15,000 range, but you could pay full points close enough in another hotel that wouldn’t be that many points more. I’m not sure what direction IHG is taking this promotion in – where do they want to get to? Do they just want to take 5,000 off the regular points rate?

  • Amit says:

O/T if I refer from my Amex plat to nectar, how many points will I get? Thanks

  • Liz says:

Has anyone stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hersperia Helsinki – we are currently booked in for 3 nights to the HI City Centre Helsinki at the end of Nov – wondering if it’s worth the move a bit further out – just a couple more stops on the tram I think.

    • Liz says:

I’ve just switched my booking over and saved 30k over 2 nights and moved my free night cert booking across too.

      • Alan says:

Nice 🙂 I stayed at the Hotel Indigo Helsinki last time I was there, haven’t tried the other IHG properties there.

      • Simon says:

I have my first ambassador booking in IHG Ljubljana. Was thinking of canceling and going at 15000 per night. Worried about losing a room upgrade with the voucher and when I would use the voucher.

Any advice on best course of action appreciated.

        Thanks

        • Genghis says:

What’s the tax inclusive cash price for night 1 in current GBP?

        • Simon says:

hi Genghis, 182 euros, so £170/175?

        • Genghis says:

I’m happy to sell IHGs for 0.4p so £120 notional for the two nights. I’d book with points and then try and use the AMB voucher for something else.

        • Simon says:

          Thanks Genghis, much appreciated

        • Yan says:

Got upgraded to Junior Suite at IC Ljubljana on a point stay (35k then) in April. I was just Plat not Ambassador, YMMV.
Very nice hotel. Ljubljana is a hidden gem.

        • Simon says:

Cheers Yan, really looking forward to it. Incidentally I saw by chance a programme last night on C4 – Travelman – and it was 48 hours in Ljubljana. Looked great.

    • Roger1* says:

      Hesperia advantages:
      – next door to direct bus link to/from airport;
      – likely to be quieter

Opposite lake and park, nice to walk/run/etc, but not for me in November!

HI City Centre advantage: close to station, services, shopping, etc.

If it were me, I’d stick with the HI.

      • Roger1* says:

That was meant to be a response to Liz at 18:42.

        • Liz says:

Thanks Roger1 – I’ve gone for it anyway. I am a sucker for saving points for future USA road trips and this was a bit of a freebie trip courtesy of compensation from Lloyd’s CC using extra upgrade voucher and points. Appreciate it’s a bit further out – and winter. We were supposed to be there last week and had to postpone due to FIL in hospital so we are now going during the Xmas markets.

        • David says:

I stayed at the CP a couple of years ago in May, and have just booked another HEL TP run for December, and plan to stay at the CP again. On the airport bus route is great, the walk into town was fine in May, not sure about Dec but I’ll take a coat…

The hotel itself is fine – good-sized pool and gym in the basement, they upgraded me (Plat on a BA Holidays booking) to a Club room, including lounge access, which has a reasonable free breakfast (including a pancake machine), plus evening snacks and drinks.

  • tartan says:

Thanks for the heads up Rob. Just booked two nights in the Chester during half term for a short break with some IHG points I had knocking around
