Hertz to become the first non-airline member of the SkyTeam alliance

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

This is, I think, a world exclusive.  I was with Caroline Simmerman, the Hertz Europe partnerships director, at a reception in Amsterdam last night and she told our group that Hertz has just agreed a deal to become the first ‘non-airline member’ of the SkyTeam airline alliance.

It isn’t quite clear how this will work.  All 20 SkyTeam airlines will, presumably, now offer miles via Hertz although this is unlikely to be exclusive given existing deals.  There was no indication of whether you could match SkyTeam status to Hertz status although I would imagine it is likely.

A full announcement is coming soon where we will find out the full details.

How to get FREE car rental status and other benefits via UK credit cards

How to get FREE car rental status and other benefits via UK credit cards (April 2024)

If you hire a car in the UK, you can get special benefits (discounts, upgrades, free additional drivers etc) if you have elite status with a car rental programme. You can get elite status for free via certain American Express cards.

The Platinum Card and American Express Business Platinum

The Platinum Card from American Express and American Express Business Platinum come with two free car hire status cards. Your supplementary Platinum cardholder can also receive status in their own right.

From Avis, you receive President’s Club status in Avis Preferred. This gets you up to 25% off standard rates, a free additional driver and a guaranteed one class upgrade. For weekend rentals you will receive a two class upgrade, subject to availability.

From Hertz, you receive ‘Five Star’ status in Hertz Gold Plus Rewards. This gets you up to 15% off standard rates, a free additional driver and a one class upgrade, subject to availability.

Hertz also offers Platinum cardholders a 4 hour grace period on rentals. Your final day is treated as 28 hours, so a 1pm pick up with a 5pm return the following day is only charged as one day, not two days. We wrote about the Hertz / Platinum 4 hour grace period here.

The Platinum Card also comes with full car hire insurance with no obligation to pay for the rental via American Express. You can refuse any attempts to sell you additional insurance at pick up. This benefit has substantial value if you rent on a regular basis.

You can find more details on the two Platinum cards, and apply, in our full reviews linked below. You can apply here for the personal card and here for the business card.

American Express Preferred Rewards Gold is an excellent card in its own right. You receive 20,000 Membership Rewards points for signing up (convert to 20,000 Avios amongst other things), four airport lounge passes and £120 of Deliveroo credit. Even better, your first year is free.

There are two car rental benefits:

  • you receive Preferred Plus status in Avis Preferred
  • you receive a special package with Hertz – 10% off best available rates at participating locations, a one class upgrade for rentals of 5 days or more, subject to availability, and no additional driver fees

I picked up a Hertz car yesterday in a Skyteam country. The bit of cardboard hanging off the mirror in the Hertz car was promoting Skyteam. I didn’t get the connection. Now I do.

For sure status will be transferable from Skyteam airlines to Hertz. Doubt it can work in the other direction?

But it says this each time you enter: “Come back and play tomorrow for another entry and another chance to win.”

    So something is wrong.

    O/T Platinum referrals for 18,000
I have referred for a Nectar credit card (which has been accepted, received and activated) but I have not received the anticipated 18K. In the back of my mind now, I remember reading that this referral bonus has stopped applying to all cards other than Gold/Plat. Is this the case?

I sadly cannot chase with AmEx due to the referrer knowing the referee very well.

    • xcalx says:

Referred to SPG and BA from plat in the last week 18K for spg on the day card arrived, still waiting for BA card.

A few month ago referred 2 x Nectar no points for either chased Amex but no joy sent the cards back unused.

      • Toby says:

Ah that’s interesting. I might bin it off as well then.
        Thanks

        • xcalx says:

Sorry I should have said, I did get 5000 points as goodwill. I even sent screenshots ( taken because amex site was playing up)

I may do chat later and ask how many referrals left on account If they claim 1 is left then it would suggest the 2 Nectar ones did track
          .
Than again I might not, as I have not been charged for the upgrade from Gold yet. No point sticking my head too far out of the trench.

        • Alex W says:

I got 18k for nectar self referral a few weeks ago.

        • Blue Mountains says:

Applied for Nectar card from Plat referral (where the referrer knows the referee very well) on the 8th Oct. The 18k referral bonus turned up 11th Oct. 3rd referral this calendar year. Maybe it’s hit and miss…

    • RakishDriver says:

When you clicked the referral link, and selected an alternative card to the platinum, was nectar listed and you clicked it? Then it’s cut and dry, chase amex.

“I sadly cannot chase with AmEx due to the referrer knowing the referee very well.” – maybe this is too cryptic or something, but the whole point of the amex referral scheme is “You must only send the referral link to close friends and family.” ??

      • AndyW says:

Guessing this person is even closer than close friends and family…

      • Steve says:

I am sure there is a ‘not’ missing before the ‘knowing’

        • Peter K says:

Hard to claim missing points for for a self-referral I’m sure.

        • RakishDriver says:

Don’t know why claiming for self-referral points is so taboo – they approve the application and I don’t remember reading that self-referral as an exception to the referral bonus

        • Crafty says:

It’s not “taboo”, it’s tapping the golden goose on the shoulder and asking her to stop laying eggs.

        • RakishDriver says:

such a delicate goose..I’ll count my chickens then.
Was hoping to bag the ‘my bestest friend’ referral for the nectar in Jan, worked for spg & ba recently…however gleaning from posts that probs will be wasting my time.

      • Toby says:

Yes, I do not want to push my luck with the goose when it has already laid a couple of 18k golden eggs already. I might try a bit of delicate questioning but not going to push too hard.

  • mohamed basma says:

Well with all tge bonanza in free avios and huge bonus US been benefiting tge extra charges&taxes is a way to compensate the disbalance, some US credit card bonus will top above 100.000 avios and we can never dream of that in UK.

  • Prins Polo says:

Those surcharges are crazy. I guess as long as they’re transparent and no longer labelled as “fuel surcharges”, little can be done about this.

Annoying because with availability usually showing just a few days before the flight, I’ve always used to book flights to the US as one-ways.

On a RT Avios ticket, if I remember correctly, the return sector cannot be changed once the outbound has been flown?

    • Louie says:

It can be changed but you won’t get any Avios back if you cancel or go down a cabin.

  • fivebobbill says:

OT. I’ve just triggered my first ever BAPP 241 voucher over the weekend, and I read in Robs article the other day that it then appears in your BA Exec Club account. I intend cancelling the card now, but would like to see proof of the voucher first! I get that it takes a few days to post, but is there anywhere in particular I need to look?

  • John says:

    AMS to LHR
Travelling economy. OH CE. Will I be able to check in with her?

    • Gin and Tonic Please says:

      Yes

      • John says:

TY. so fast track security also?
Are they ever likely to upgrade?

        • Lyn says:

Going back a couple of years since we’ve done this, but yes to fast track security at LHR and yes to a very nice person voluntarily upgrading my husband at the gate, again at LHR (I wouldn’t have asked), although I suspect this is rare. Perhaps more likely if your wife has status? I had silver at the time. No experience with AMS.

  • Lumma says:

OT – I applied for a supplementary card on my Gold Amex credit card for myself, so I would have an extra Amex for shop small and to see if they’d give me the first supplementary 3000 points.

A few days later I received an email from amex asking me to call them about my application, to continue with it. I didn’t bother calling but they’ve added the 3000 points to my account anyway. I still haven’t received the supplementary card however

    • Genghis says:

Everyone needs separate cards to easily segregate personal and work expenses on all cards

      • Lumma says:

I have the separate card in my name on another account but I had wondered if they’d stopped this happening when I got the email. As the bonus points have posted I’m wondering if I still need to call if I want the supp or if it’s on its way
