A few days ago, after an unexpected delay, Marriott Rewards launched its ‘daily play’ game ’29 Ways to Stay’.

The good news is that daily play now means daily win.

There are 2 MILLION prizes to be won, although most are just 50 Marriott Rewards points.  There is a huge grand prize where one person wins a 2-night stay at EVERY Marriott brand – that is 29 stays in hotel.

The game launched with confusion. The game implied that you could try to win an instant prize every day.  It turned out, however, that the game was only letting you win once – ever.  All future daily plays got you another entry in the grand draw but no more daily prizes.

Marriott has now changed the rules / fixed their dodgy IT (delete as applicable).  You can now play ’29 Ways to Stay’ each day and you could win a prize each day for another three weeks.

The daily prizes are:

  • 87 prizes of 4-night hotel stays (3 winners per brand, you don’t get to choose the brand you get)
  • 75,000 DAILY prizes of 50 Marriott Rewards points
  • 5,000 DAILY prizes of 500 Marriott Rewards points
  • 2,500 DAILY prizes of 1,000 Marriott Rewards points
  • 500 DAILY prizes of 2,000 Marriott Rewards points
  • 250 DAILY prizes of 3,000 Marriott Rewards points
  • 100 DAILY prizes of 4,000 Marriott Rewards points
  • 75 DAILY prizes of 5,000 Marriott Rewards points
  • 50 DAILY prizes of 10,000 Marriott Rewards points
  • 16 DAILY prizes of 20,000 Marriott Rewards points

Marriott states that it expects you to have a 50/50 chance each day of winning a prize.

The link to play is here.  Good luck.

  • Mark says:

It might be coincidence, but from my experience of the past 3 days, the Marriott game gives the prizes if you pair up all 3 sets of photos first time round. AND lets you play again if you get them wrong first time. So it can be a prize a day now (if you can be bothered for 50 points!)

  • Russ says:

OT, anyone worked out what’s the best sop to maximize the ‘outbound spend bonus’ on gold amex credit card? I’ve looked through HFP for previous articles on this but not sure there was a definitive best procedure.

    • Mark2 says:

Am I missing out on something? What is the ‘outbound spend bonus’?

    • Uknewbie says:

Overseas spend accrues an additional MR per £ spent. But note that it comes with a hefty 3.99% foreign transaction fee, so I wouldn’t recommend it unless someone else is paying off your bills

      • Shoestring says:

2.99% actually. Nothing to be scared of (on Gold Amex) if you will go for the 10,000 MR bonus spend at year end & value MR points @ 1p.

2 points/2p back per £ on overseas spend + 0.67p on hitting your £15,000 target = you get back 2.67p on every 3p fee per £ on foreign spend.

Net cost to you 0.33p per £ spent abroad.

        • Genghis says:

There is of course an opportunity cost.
Ie. You’re down 0.33p on your Amex Gold calcs but you could be up 1.5p if used Revolut topped up with VM+ card.

        • Shoestring says:

Yep but my ‘nothing to be scared of’ meant precisely that: for the lazy people such as myself, using Amex Gold abroad isn’t exactly going to cost them much in fees on average sorts of abroady spend plus they/ I avoid the hassle of messing around with different cards. Reminder to self: please *do* get the Clarity out tomorrow when you get the fresh bread & bits, stop using the first card that comes up! 🙂

        • Genghis says:

I know what you mean. It gets confusing with all the fees / weekend surcharges / time zones / only use that card if it’s raining etc all to save a few pence / earn a few points. I was tempted just to go 100% Starling recently on everyday abroad spend and ATMs (but didn’t 🙂 )

      • Callum says:

Plus Amex generally give a worse exchange rate than MasterCard.

Not quite sure what’s so confusing/hassling about using a different card abroad! Just pick a Curve card linked to a decent reward card or something like the MBNA Horizon/Tandem and use them everywhere.

        • Shoestring says:

          Nothing confused here, just lazy!

Don’t get me wrong, for the bulk of my spend abroad I have local funds in place at a rate I was happy with (local bank a/c) or (say) pay for a big supermarket delivery on Clarity. Just talking paying for fresh bread and sundry daily bits!

    • Russ says:

Thanks everyone for your help, and yes, the daily ‘which card should I use now’ grows tired after a while. There’s a lot of work collecting for ‘free’ flights.

  • Steve says:

Quick question. I will be travelling solo from LHR. Am I able to use my wife’s lounge club card? (She still has two free passes via Amex)

    • Shoestring says:

      No

      • BJ says:

Yes, if he also has her gold card and the lounge is not too fussy.

        • Shoestring says:

Very unfussy would be required. They don’t always ask for BP I guess, can’t remember them ever asking to see a Gold card though, just normally the Lounge Club card + BP. One of which would have his wife’s name on, the other, his.

  • faithy says:

    OT.
Do you get points for spend at spa at Hilton Hotels?

    • Anna says:

I think you do if you get it charged to the room and pay the bill in one go at checkout. Same with restaurants etc.

    • Kai says:

Depends if it’s run by the hotel.

  • Jason says:

    Hi Rob

Where did you stay in Prague trying to work out if it should be the Hilton or Marriott

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

I didn’t. I was there for 3 hours and never even left the security area around the airport (so I didn’t need to clear security when leaving).

    • Sussex bantam says:

Much for a muchness but I slightly prefer the Marriott

      • BJ says:

I like the ‘new’ Hilton because I’ve had great status recognition there but others have reported the opposite.

  • Timbo says:

Could someone confirm to me the actual value of a Marriott point? I’m trying to determine whether the SPG Amex actually beats the Nectar one (1%) for earning rate. Obviously the £50 higher annual fee also needs to be factored in.

    • Genghis says:

Whilst of course there is no “actual value”, I work to 0.5p for use on hotels. Lower if you’d otherwise convert to miles.

      • Lady London says:

        @Genghis what is VM+? haven’t had enough coffee today…

        • Peter K says:

VM+ is the Virgin Money premium card it looks like (1.5 Virgin miles for £1 spent).

        • Genghis says:

Yep. I can never remember the full name. Seems like a good short hand?

      • Rob says:

        I agree with 0.5p.

You can beat that when redeeming, but when you do beat it you are usually into ‘but I wouldn’t pay that territory’. eg St Regis New York for $1100 + taxes or 60,000 points when I stayed, but I wouldn’t have paid $1100.

      • Alan says:

I tend to work with 0.4p for hotels and 0.75p for airlines, although with weak GBP I should probably up the hotel value slightly!

    • TGLoyalty says:

50p so 1.5% on the spg card

      • TGLoyalty says:

Meant 0.5p as above which gives the 1.5%. Should have refreshed before I posted too as it had been answered.

  • CountryKerry says:

OT: Lloyds Avios just sent me new cards as my last ones expire shortly… the new cards expire in July next year! I’ve never seen such a short life on new cards!

    • Alan says:

Interesting to have a shorter expiry – lots of previous posts with longer dates, which of course didn’t mean anything but shorter dates is a bit more unusual!

  • Andrew-a says:

OT: I have a IHG card free night that expires March next year. In the T & C’s it says “booking dates” from 4 March 2017 to 14 March 2018. Does anyone know if i can book a stay for after 14 March next year as long as I book before that date?
    Thanks in advance.
