You can save on new luxury hotels in Asia with Mastercard and Be The First.

Be The First, if you haven’t heard of it before, is a website specialised in offering discounted rooms at new luxury and boutique hotels.

We covered it a couple a years ago when it launched but, to be honest, I thought it had faded away.

I was wrong, and to prove it the company has recently partnered  with Mastercard, offering cardholders even better prices at new upscale hotels in Asia.

Offers vary depending on the property and could be for example 30% off or stay 3 pay 3 nights.  All hotels included can be found on this special partner website here. More hotels will be added as the partnership advances.

OT. Just spotted there’s a Spend £35 get £10 back offer for Heathrow Express showing on my BAPP.

    • Lumma says:

Or spend less and get the tube or tfl rail to Heathrow?

      • tartan says:

You could indeed – I myself only use the Heathrow Express when work are paying and time is at a premium. However lots of people do use HE for various reasons so this would be a good offer that they might not have noticed – hence the post

        • Rob says:

Now that kids are free it is better value than it was. GGL members still get free First Class upgrades too.

      • Matt says:

I’ll take the Heathrow Express thanks! Considerably quicker and more civilised.

        • Rob says:

I took TFL Rail recently and, whilst clearly not up to HEx standards, it is laughably cheap if you need to get the tube to Paddington anyway since it is all included in the daily price cap.

        • plank says:

          more civilised?

do you believe people have to sit with chickens on their lap on the tube?

        • John says:

I wouldn’t mind having a chicken on my lap when the tube only costs £1.50

    • RakishDriver says:

in addition to that on my plat, got a 10% off Brasserrie bar but when trying to save, says ‘offer no loner available’ – don’t care much about this particular offer but had this happened to a decent offer…. it wasn’t there yesterday. Anyone see this before?

      • Kevin C says:

I’ve got offers for Prada and Hungry Horse pubs on my Plat. I like that they think I’m into both.

  • RakishDriver says:

OT Marriot points. The SPG amex points from spend are showing as ‘bonus’ on my marriot account.
Do ‘bonus’ points reset the expiry clock?

  • Liz says:

I received the Virgin email for my account but not my hubby’s or daughters. I converted £15 of vouchers over on Saturday night and the miles including the 10% bonus were in my Virgin account Sunday morning. I have a few big Tesco vouchers expiring next month so converted part of it and also to top my Virgin account up to 50k. Will switch on auto convert to get the 1000 miles then diary to switch back off again before the next quarter.

    • Tilly71 says:

Liz, did you have auto convert on & bagged the 1K bonus last Q?
We both had auto C on & both not received the email so maybe exempt from the offer as they think we have already used our vouchers?

      • Liz says:

No I didn’t have it auto convert on this past quarter. I have over £600 in CC vouchers and enough Avios for our trips for the next couple of years so I just convert when I need to or in this case have to. Will switch on auto convert till 14/12, wait and see if the bonus triggers then revert back before next quarter. I have received the bonus 1000 pts a few times in the past but haven’t done it for a while so hopeful this time.

  • Nigel says:

10% TCC bonus does work. I converted £30 worth the other day and the posted the next day with 10% extra

OT: Doubletree KL. Someone was asking what it was like a few days ago. Sat in the exec lounge at the moment with views over the city. Paid for a basic room, £60 a night and upgraded to an King Deluxe Suite (HH Diamond), the room is starting to look a little dated. Lounge staff are very attentive and taxis using Grab are less than £2 to Bukit Bintag. Overall, great value for money with my only complaint is that the hotel is very very brown!

    • BJ says:

Down on the lower floor of the small mall under the hotel there is a very inexpensive food court. The Indian counter on the back wall used to have quite good food. There is also a minisupermarket down there with loads of imported foods so if you’re craving any snack from home it is worth a look.

      • Craig says:

Only here for 36 hours but thanks, it seems rude not to venture out both evenings.

    • Lounge Hopper says:

Interesting, thanks. I have a stay there soon but might be tight for time – What are the evening happy hour times for the lounge and is is the food any good?

      • Craig says:

Happy Hour in the lounge is 5.30 to 7.30, plenty to drink, wine, beer, cocktails. Just light snacks on the food side, but for less than £2 each way using Grab (downloaded the app and added a card on arrival) then Jalan Alor food market is worth it. BJ’s suggestion sounds good, also there is the Tapak urban street dining about 10 minutes walk away. I didn’t get chance to try it but hear good things, basically it’s a group of dining trucks in a car park!

        • Lounge Hopper says:

          Brilliant, thank you!

        • KL visitor says:

whats the heat like, day & night? sweaty/humid? whats best to wear? and any spray etc needed for pesky mosquitos or similar? thanks!!

oh and does the place smell of urine??? (Genghis says it does!!)

    • Tom1 says:

“Someone was asking what it was like a few days ago.”

Yep, that was me. Thanks for the tips!

  • faithy says:

OT. Hertz or Avis, both with status through Plat.
Which is better to be loyal to?

    • Rob MC says:

Neither, go for the cheapest option!

    • Jack says:

Personally I’d say Hertz, as they’ve generally been very accommodating with upgrades, the redemption rates are not bad and there’s constant bonuses. However, they’re (both) mostly franchises so how well they look after you varies from location to location.

  • FlyUpTop says:

Has anyone who did not receive the email about the 10% VA clubcard bonus converted and received the 10% bonus?
I would do a small test run but my smallest voucher is £12.
I think VA are making good profits, do we think the 10% is about as good as we will get as a bonus?

    • Lounge Hopper says:

You don’t have to convert a whole voucher. You can spend part of a voucher and get change in your
      next statement

      • FlyUpTop says:

Thanks but I don’t want to tie up £18.50 of change in vouchers worth until next Q.

  • Crafty says:

Be the First is London based, yet charges a 2% supplement for Amex payment. I believe this is illegal.
