  • PAL says:

Hi all, SPG related, finally got my points posted from August last week, however when it takes me to the Marriott page, I still have the 13,000 odd points from the SPG bonus – how do I make this multiply by 3 to get Marriott points?

    • JPa says:

Good question, I have been chasing this for months. On my chat last week they assured me that it was on the list of things to fix and they would raise it up the chain, as it will be dealt with…

As this is Amex related (and nothing to do with SPG / Marriott) I not sure why it is taking so long to fix. They have had months to fix the multipiler for the bonus points. They did it for normal points, but must have purposefully excluded bonus points….

      • Matt says:

Correct, this is an Amex problem so you need to take it up with them not Marriott. It took one working day to solve manually… once I raised a complaint. I suggest channelling some righteous anger and being determined not to be fobbed off next time you contact them. Good luck to you both.

  • Anna says:

OT – does anyone have experience of cancelling a direct debit agreement on a finance arrangement and making the payments by debit/credit card instead? I’m just slightly concerned that this might be breaching the terms of the agreement (although they allow overpayments by this method).

    • Genghis says:

      What do the terms say?

    • Graham Walsh says:

I was looking into this with VWFS but it states payments much be via DD I am sure.

      • Anna says:

I suspect this is the case. It’s a pain but I suppose the finance companies don’t want to have to chase up forgotten payments, which I guess would probably happen with some customers!

        • Nick M says:

For credit card payments, some issuers will not collect the DD if a payment is received x days before they are due to collect the DD… it might be the same for you? – The DD may need to be in place as a security measure, but could be overridden? Or ask if you can reduce it to a nominal payment?

    • Anna says:

      Thanks all.

The next time the lease on one of our cars expires I am going to pay the maximum initial payment on the new one on a points earning card (or even via Billhop if it will trigger a 2 4 1) which will reduce the monthly payments. Why have I never thought of this before?!

  • N says:

Completely OT: Eurostar Standard Premier – first time in SP. Do we get served champagne? If no, what sort of drinks do we get? Can I bring my own champs?

    • Genghis says:

No champagne in SP, only BP. The usual softies and different wines with dinner. I usually stick to Sprite and water but have indulged on the wine a few times, essentially all you can drink if you get a good crew. The food, however, in SP IMO is very much an “amuse bouche” and not that good. BP food much better. Don’t see why you can’t take your own champagne.

      • N says:

Lovely, thank you. On a bit of a celebratory trip so will be indulging the bar as much as reasonable. Not too fussed about lack of food – it’ll be a bonus. Will bring a bottle, and ask nicely.

        • Genghis says:

Remember the lounges with Amex Plat. I’ve not been to St P lounge since the new bar was put in upstairs (it was being built last time I was there). Do report back.

        • Genghis says:

I might be there myself now week after next (most likely late afternoon). Let me know if you want my thoughts.

        • N says:

Will be with my partner who doesn’t have a Plat (she cut her old one up before I told her not to!), will try and sneak in solo and/or charm the person at the desk to let us in both

  • Pug206 says:

OT – Is anyone taking up the offer from BA following the data breaches of a year’s free membership with ProtectMyId?

Also OT – I received an email yesterday purportedly from BA Holidays reminding me that my holiday was coming up and did I want to book any extras – car hire, parking etc. The email had a BA-type reference number – 6 capital letters. I didn’t recognise this as I don’t book BA Holidays – just flights and car hire mainly.

Nevertheless, I put the reference number into BA account and it wasn’t found. Just thought this was worth mentioning in case it’s on the back of data breach and coming from fraudsters.

    • Russ says:

I had one reminding me to update my details for a Frankfurt flight in December. Thought it was odd because it’s rather early and my details are up to date. Not suggesting it isn’t from BA but I’m taking emails from BA with a pinch of salt at the moment. May be a bit unfair but with Christmas coming up who needs the extra worry.

    • Voltron says:

Signed up to protectmyID, it is handy, but the problem is that any credit search takes couple of weeks to appear on your credit report, so by the time you get an alert, if there was a fraud application it would be too late.
It is still handy to have for free.
Also sign up to the MSE credit club for monthly credit report / score free of charge.

    • Anna says:

Have you tried calling BA to query it? It is odd about the dodgy reference number but I get emails from them regularly asking me if I want to book extras. Saying that, I’ve never checked them against my current bookings as I never want extras from BA!

  • Frenske says:

OT Esso offers 200 Clubpoints when using their Esso app for paying.

  • Gill says:

OT – Anything to distinguish between cx or qantas business hk lounge for food? Thanks

    • Genghis says:

Do you want dan dan noodles or something more “western” (i.e. a curry)? QF and the Wing aren’t too far apart.

      • Gill says:

Probably western. I’m all noodled out. If they’re near enough then I’ll park myself nearer the gate and switch if I nothing takes my fancy.

        • HeathrowFlyer says:

Western – QF is best IMO for food. Lots of salads etc available.

        • HeathrowFlyer says:

Also QF is usually next to the BA gates

        • guesswho2000 says:

QF is on the right, straight after the FT e-channel gates, and their food is great, I had an excellent barbecue pork disk given to me by the bartender moments after I sat down last month.

The CX lounges are all pretty good though, and if you fancy noodles at any point, head that way. There’s Mumm champagne in the CX lounges, but better on tap beer in QF.

My advice would be to visit both (as in CX and QF, unless you really want to visit more than one of the CX lounges).

  • chelseafi says:

O/T went to SPG O2 lounge Sunday to see Counting Crows, myself and OH were the only two in the box but they had still catered for full attendance, the food was lovely. Just received an email from them to say after I’d paid 45,000 points it had gone down to 15,000 points, so they have refunded me 30,000, how good is that!

    • Peter K says:

      That’s brill!

    • Rob says:

I put that on Twitter when I saw it down to 15k but clearly no-one bit. Worth 15k for the spread!

      • chelseafi says:

A few others have gone down to 30k now. Florence and Machine down from 60k to 45k, saw them supporting Stones this summer very good.

        • Stu N says:

Rob – I saw it but far too late for us to go, would have loved to. Glad you had a good one chelseafi and a nice goodwill gesture from Marriott too.

    • S**mo says:

Had the same happen to me at a WWE event in NY – very good of them!

  • Rhys says:

OT as Bits. Probably a question that Genghis can answer!

If you close your BAPP before the Avios have been swept across to your BA account, are they forfeited or do they still transfer them? Thanks.

    • Genghis says:

They are forfeited and don’t transfer across (unlike SPG used to, not sure about Marriott now…)

      • Rhys says:

Thanks Genghis, and for the mega quick response!, I suspected as much. Think it’s still worth doing for me in order to reset the clock.

        • Genghis says:

I always analyse in terms of monthly fees. I.e. BAPP costs £16.25 a month and if I’d be getting transferred over more than the pro-rata cost until next sweep at about 1ppa, I wait. Otherwise, happy to forfeit.

      • Matt says:

They’ve always transferred across for me after account closure on both BAPP and SPG. Wouldn’t risk it for large numbers of points, but for a few hundred I do.

    • Alex says:

mine were transferred (unexpectedly) few months ago.

    • RTS says:

Hahah Ghengis, you should be on the payroll.
