Expedia drops Nectar as an earning and spending partner

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Expedia and Nectar have announced that they are ending their partnership on 15th December.

At present, you can earn Nectar points on all Expedia bookings at the following rates:

Package bookings: 1,000 Nectar points
Hotel-only bookings: 200 Nectar points
Flight-only bookings: 200 Nectar points
Car-only bookings: 200 Nectar points

With such paltry earn rates, it is hardly surprising that few people were choosing to use Expedia purely because of the carrot of Nectar points.  Remember that, in 99% of cases, Nectar points are worth exactly 0.5p when redeemed.

Expedia drops Nectar

You will continue to earn points on bookings made up to 15th December, irrespective of when you travel.

From the same date, it will no longer be possible to redeem Nectar points for Expedia vouchers.   To be honest, since they were worth the same 0.5p per point of value as redeeming them in Sainsbury’s, this is not a great loss.  You can always use your points to pay for your groceries and use the money saved to book travel.

Sainsbury’s bought Nectar earlier this year, and I’m not sure if they will consider this a loss or if they are happy to see the scheme shrink down to a pure Sainsbury’s ‘earn and burn’ scheme.

Expedia Rewards, the lacklustre Expedia loyalty scheme which we covered here, will continue.

OT: I’ve renewed IHG Ambassador for $200 to save 15% on the redemptions. I’ve made a few redemptions since, but never received the 15% of points back. Does anybody have any past data on when to expect these to arrive?

    • Genghis says:

15%? I only get 10%. Recently they’ve turned up around 4-6 weeks after the stay. They used to require lots of manual intervention where CS say wait 8 weeks.

    • mr dee says:

supposed to be 10% and up to 10 working days (In theory)

    • Maciek says:

Oh, maybe it’s 10%, sorry for the confusion. I can’t locate any T&C :/ are the points supposed to post after the stay? (in which case it’s all good – stays are well into 2019)

      • Rob says:

They come in chunks at random times during the year.

        • Sarah says:

Hi Rob. Please can you explain what this is. My husband is IHG Ambassador member and don’t think he’s ever received 10% back?

          • Rob says:

When you renew you need to renew at the expensive level. Instead of paying $150, you pay $200. You get 15,000 bonus points (which covers the extra $50 immediately) and then a 10% points refund on all redemptions you make that year. Often including ones you end up cancelling ….

        • Genghis says:

When you renew Ambassador there’s the normal renewal option (pay USD150) or another option which is pay USD200 and receive IIRC 15k IHG points and receive 10% back on all IHG reward stays (not just IC). For me, getting 10% back is worth the money before even accounting for the “BOGOF” night.

        • Genghis says:

To add, you need to rebook any existing reward stays once you have the 10% back option.

        • Steve-B says:

Existing bookings have counted in my experience after being confirmed by CS, but agree safer to rebook as not explicitly covered by T&Cs.

        • Craig says:

Is 10% rebate from the date you renew or from the anniversary? Getting conflicted information?

        • Steve-B says:

Anniversary date – so, to be clear, when I renewed my 2nd year, existing bookings that fell into the new AMB year triggered the rebate. Obviously not an issue once you are beyond your first year providing you renew this option each time. If redemption nights are still available, best to cancel and rebook to be sure as Genghis suggests.

    • Jim says:

On some occasions I received the 10% a few days after the stay, other times a few weeks and others having to chase IHG, where I was first told 4-6 weeks then 8 weeks. Currently expecting some points next week.
Chase them via the online missing points form.

      • Alan says:

I’ve got some stays booked for next year at IHG. I’ll have to take another look at Ambassador. Do you need to have Spire before you can get Ambassador?

        • Genghis says:

IHG status and AMB are discrete. If no status, getting AMB gives IHG Gold IIRC.

        • Alan says:

Thanks Genghis. I am currently platinum via the IHG credit card so the gold won’t be of benefit

        • Lyn says:

Remember that Ambassador benefits, like upgrades and late checkout, are supposed to only be for ICs. But the 10% points rebate is for all IHG reward bookings.

  • Andrew Steele says:

I had an Email from Expedia which actually told me that I should access Expedia’s site via the Nectar website and thereby continue to collect Nectar points. I don’t buy from Expedia for the points so it isn’t a big deal. With exploring if Nectar points are a deal breaker.

    • Rob says:

This is massively misleading. Expedia goes onto the Nectar online shop, but if you go that route you cut yourself off from any other rewards or return.

      • Callum says:

There’s a difference between misleading and not promoting the best deal.

How exactly could you call this the former?

  • Tim says:

In the latest Groupon Spain Avios offer, I had issues with the redemption. My Groupon account was showing “voucher redeemed” but the points never arrived in my Iberia account and when checking my Groupon account again, the voucher kept saying “available” so in other words, not redeemed. This is where Google Translate is your friend and after a few slightly frustrating exchanges with Groupon Spain and just copying and pasting from Translate, the points eventually credited. You need to watch your Groupon and Iberia accounts due to the short-ish deadline to redeem and be prepared for a bit of faff but it’s still worth doing.

  • BJ says:

OT: Premier Inn is opening a new hotel in Oban next spring, prices already loaded and some excellent rates due to sale and low/shoulder season. Hotel is close to the railway station and dock. To date Oban has no chain hotels and independents can have high rates or poor quality. Thus, PI will be an excellent addition for those exploring West Highlands and Islands by car, ferry, West Highland line trains, Jacobite steam train, flights to Barra and so on. I would expect standard rates at this hotel will settle on the high side just like at Fort William so probably best booked off season or during sales. Just booked 3 nights here and one in Fort William for £141 in May.

  • mr dee says:

Would sell my Avios at this price if it was possible

  • Anna says:

Slightly OT – Is there a minimum length of time an Iberia account needs to be open before you can use the Groupon offer? I really need to get round to opening one! Also, don’t you need to do something like scanning and uploading you passport as ID, that sounds like a right faff as we say up north?!

    • Joe says:

You can use a new Iberia account with the groupon offer, but you can’t transfer the points you buy to BAEC until:

      a) the Iberia account is 3 months old; and

      b) you’ve gained points into the Iberia account by a means other than buying them. The easiest way is to transfer 1000 MR in.

  • Craig says:

Hi, does switching to the free BA Amex from the paid one get rid of your collected Avios or do they move these over to the new account? I have 20,000 sat on my Amex account that have yet to be transferred over. Thanks

    • Anna says:

You keep the same account, it’s just the card that changes. Your avios will still be there.

    • Roger1* says:

20,000 Avios stuck in your AmEx account? That doesn’t sound right. Avios are normally transferred once a month from AmEx to BA Avios accounts. Once they’re at BA, they don’t show in AmEx accounts.

      • Anna says:

I was assuming Craig was intending to change over to the free card prior to the date his points would move across to BA. I’m just waiting for 34,000 to move before I close my BAPP, it feels like it’s taking forever!

  • Roger says:

    OT_Vente-Privee

I have Amex Offer (20% CB), can I use it to buy Avios from Vente-Privee?
