IHG, the owner of InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn etc – has launched an interesting new offer to drive traffic to its new UK hotels.

Earlier this year, IHG acquired Principal Hotels.  This brought a number of high quality UK city centre hotels into the system.  Over the next 12 months the majority of these will be rebranded as Kimpton or InterContinental hotels.  At the moment, only two properties have been rebranded (London and Cardiff) and those are under brands most people won’t recognise (Kimpton and voco respectively).

What is the deal?

IHG has therefore got a plan:

If you stay TWO nights at any of the hotels listed below, before 31st March, you will receive a voucher for a free night at any IHG hotel.  The voucher must be used by 31st October.

It is important to note that the two nights do NOT need to be consecutive and do NOT even need to be at the same hotel.

Stays must be ‘qualifying’ for IHG Rewards Club base points.  This means that reward nights and certain heavily discounted rates, which do not earn IHG points, will not trigger this offer either.

You can register here.

What hotels are included?

This is the list – click through for full details:

It is also worth noting that all of the hotels below are also now bookable for reward nights via ihg.com.  A reader emailed yesterday to say that he had been able to book one of the Edinburgh hotels for New Years Eve, saving £497 cash rate!

What is the small print on the voucher?

We don’t know.

The rules say that it is ‘room only, standard rooms only, Regent Hotels excluded’.  This implies that it books into standard reward night inventory.  I would imagine that if a reward night is bookable, you will be able to use the voucher.  It would have been helpful if IHG has said this upfront.

We do not know if the voucher is sent as soon as you complete your second night or if you need to wait until the promotion ends in March.

What is the value of the free night voucher?

It is NOT the cost of the room you book.

Because the voucher almost certainly books into reward availability, it is worth a maximum of 70,000 IHG Rewards Club points.  This is most you can pay for a reward night via IHG Rewards Club.

When IHG is running a 100% ‘buy points’ bonus, as it occasionally does, you can pick up 70,000 points for $350, which is currently £277.  You shouldn’t value the voucher at more than this.

And, of course, the voucher is only valid until 31st October.  If you are not planning to visit somewhere with a highly-priced IHG hotel (New York, Paris etc) then it isn’t even worth £277.

Is this worth a mattress run?

Potentially, but with only a few hotels taking part – and some of them being very expensive – your options are limited.

On Saturday 6th January, for example, The Met Hotel in Leeds is £40 (single bedded room).  Book a couple of nights like that and your free night voucher is bound to be a profitable one.  Remember that you must check-in in person – you can’t make a booking and then not show up.

There is also likely to be a new round of IHG’s Accelerate promotion in the New Year.  Your two nights for this promotion should count towards your targets for that offer and trigger other bonuses.

Do I need to register?

Yes.  You can register online here.

Overall …..

This is a good little offer from IHG Rewards Club and, if you can shape your travels between now and the end of March to take advantage, it should work out profitably for you.

On the face of it, a decent offer, if one needs to stay anyway, and especially if one can take advantage of the very low rates at the Leeds property (£50-£60 per night per double room on weekends), but as pointed out, the free night may end up not being entirely free and the T&C clearly state no status benefits on these stays, so I think value is limited, and wouldn’t go out of my way on this one, unless as mentioned i had to stay these two nights anyway.

    • ian says:

the free night will be as free as any other reward night. in other words, u’ll need to pay city taxes and resort fees such as those charged in rome, but not vat (except in india and possibly a few other countries).

      ian. 🙂

this deal looks an interesting challenge! especially if you can use the voucher on one of the expensive ones listed.
slightly OT ihg acceralate is pretty poor this time, but they did a series for black Friday. one was 50 per cent extra for bonus package points (which seem a lot harder to get now the 5000 option has disappeared on most UK hotels) so i went for it and the bonus points don’t seem to go towards status! it was not clear as I could not find the rules for the offer. now i have just missed out on plat! is it worth challenging or grovelling with them?
could do ambassador subscription on points as an alternative next year at some point.

    • Peter K says:

Or get the IHG black card. In the first year the bonus points almost mitigate the cost and you get platinum.

      • Rob mc says:

Can you do curve withdrawals using the IHG card without fee..?

        • Rob says:

          Yes

        • Rob mc says:

Applied after closing my previous card 14 months ago and I’ve been declined.. no issues on credit report and have three other credit cards (none with creation) I did hit and run with the IHG card last time and paid off in full so perhaps I’m not what they’re looking for

      • pommy ray says:

        thanks

    • Alex W says:

@pommy ray bonus points package points should be elite qualifying. The 50% bonus from black Friday will not be elite qualifying.

      • pommy ray says:

hi Alex, thanks for reply think unfortunately you may be right ! if I knew i would have booked basic night somewhere to hit 40k. annoying as 2 were 4k bpp and the 5k seems to have dried up. the terms were not obvious in fact I don’t even have a copy of that one maybe some of the other ones of the 5 deal. worth a grovelling email. some outfits rad and gha do extra status nights so not out of the question. ihg tend to be a bit rigid but let’s see….unless they do deal on the new ambassador with plat ihg status ! unlikely.

        • Alex W says:

As a general rule of thumb, bonus points are not usually elite qualifying. If you manage to get round IHG’s “computer says no” attitude then let us know who to contact!!

        • TGLoyalty says:

Joining IHG ambassador will give you platinum next year.

  • Spitfire Charlie says:

If I book 2 rooms on the same night, any idea if that would qualify for the Free Night?

    >>”Free Night Offer is available for IHG Rewards Club Members who register for the Offer and complete 2 nights at selected UK hotels between 17 December 2018 and 31 March 2019″

  • BA-flyer says:

Any thoughts on whether the Mastercard 30% off discount would be an eligible rate for this offer?

    • pommy ray says:

I would have thought so unless they insist on
      your rate
      as the rate to qualify
interesting to see if the 2 night extra 10k points at London kimpton appears as an option on mc site!

  • James67 says:

Is it possible to transfer Marriott points to my wife’s account (we are both gold) without calling the US customer services number? Preferably want to do it online.

    • Gary says:

      No
But I managed to ring up and just say we are trying to do the transfer she took the info and then did it without needing to speak to Mrs.(for the best as it would have only added to my wife’s annoyance at my hobby!!)

    • Mark2 says:

I always use 020 7012 7312 which usually connects to Cork.

      • Stu N says:

The UK number above works fine, we used it at the weekend. Took about 5 mins – called middle of the day on a Sunday.

The person making the transfer needs to make the call and will need their own Marriott number and the Marriott number of the recipient. Points landed in about ten minutes. All good.

  • Nico Atienza says:

    Click through what link??

  • a9504477 says:

Is there anything that would not make the voucher trigger if i use the 30% off mastercard rate for the booking?

  • lee says:

If i was going to flip my Krisflyer miles can someone recommend a company that i could trust to buy them from me ?

    thanks in advance

    • Joe Green says:

Please feel free to email me on nepweno at gmail.com will put you in touch with a company I have used in the past.
