Malaysia Airlines ‘drops’ First Class by calling it Business Suite – and you can’t use Avios

Malaysia Airlines – a oneworld partner of British Airways – has made a marketing decision to rename its First Class product as ‘Business Suite’.

The airline has stated that it made the move as a result of many corporates now refusing to pay for First Class.  The Business Suite – which is available from London Heathrow on Malaysia’s A350-900 and A380 fleet – will be offered at a premium over a standard Business Class seat and will be cheaper than it previously cost to book First Class directly.

As you can see in the photo below, it is a very nice product.  The A350-900 version pictured has fully enclose suites with doors.

Malaysia Airlines A350-900 First

Nothing else is changing.  Business Suite customers will still, it seems, get the old First Class food, First Class amenity kits etc.

Here’s the bad news.  It seems that Avios customers are going to lose out.

When I looked last week, it seemed that the new ‘Business Suite’ could not be booked using Avios.  I tried to double-check this yesterday and could not find ANY Malaysia Airlines Avios availability from London, in ANY class, for ANY date, so I am guessing there was some sort of IT issue.

Even when it returns, however, I doubt ‘Business Suite’ will be bookable.  The only way of getting into the ‘Business Suite’ would appear to be if Malaysia allows you to pay a supplement.  It looks like I will need to cross this one off my bucket list ….

Am booked London to Langkawi in business and tried to upgrade the cash booking to “business suite” on the Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur leg only to be told that it was not possible since the suite is unavailable on the Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi hop!! Perhaps they are reserving it for airline staff!!! Seems ridiculous to turn down a customer wanting to pay for the privilege

    • BJ says:

      Try again with another CSA.

    • Dave H says:

Have you tried through the website, I have a multi flight booking with them and I can see an upgrade option to the suite on the 350 KL-SYD leg although it is a bid process.

      • Jon says:

Might be worth trying again in a few days. I noticed the other day that trying to book Business Suites (on the web site) to anywhere beyond KL (at least, the handful of destinations I tried) throws an error. Wouldn’t surprise me if Marketing rolled out this rebrand without checking that IT had everything in place to accept bookings 😉 They’ll no doubt get round to fixing it eventually…

  • Sharon says:

To be fair MH hasn’t been visible on ba.com for ages, I’ve only recently spotted availability on aa.com and even that has gone from great daily availability on both LHR-KUL flights to absolutely zero. Availability has only ever been in J and I have never seen anything in F

  • Zana711 says:

Nice spot! (I definitely missed that!). I was pleased to see that Curve is rolling out Curve Credit, not because I’m likely to use it but seems that Curve may have a slightly more viable business model going forward!

    • Mike says:

I’m hoping the free curve card will work with Amex by self assessment payment deadline!

      • Shoestring says:

If it does, it’s going to cost you a fee & maybe wipe out all/ most of the benefits of that strategy.

With the full metal card, unlimited Amex usage = hefty fee, for sure.

    • Rob says:

      I thought that too.

      • Zana711 says:

Interestingly enough, N26 launched its metal card offering in UK yesterday. £14.90 per month buys travel insurance and LoungeKey membership plus unlimited free ATM withdrawals. Revolut Metal at £12.99 per month buys travel insurance, £600 per month ATM withdrawals and concierge service. Curve Metal does look like an interesting offering (especially the gadget insurance and unlimited AMEX) but will surely cost more than Revolut and N26.

        • Rob says:

The Curve lounge benefit will not include free visits – you pay the £15 fee per visit – so that won’t be ramping up the fee.

  • Phil Huff says:

I stayed at the Sofia hotel a couple of months ago. It’s a lovely place with a fantastic circular bar on the ground floor, and the of triangular panels that hang from the ceiling look great. Nice rooftop area too, but it was very cold the night I was there so I left quickly.

Less impressive was the wind tunnel effect from the lobby through to the pool exit. They ended up closing the front door and making customers use the restaurant entrance. One colleague also managed to not see a glass door and smashed it rather comprehensively! It was an interesting stay…

  • xcalx says:

Got both offers too. However flights needed are £166 on BA Amex charging £220.48 for the same flights.

  • Tracy says:

O/T, if I pay for lounge access on a reward night at an Intercontinental should I get IHG points on the paid lounge access or is the whole stay non qualifying?

    • Lyn says:

I think you should receive them, but you may have to ask the hotel to code that part as qualifying either when checking out or retroactively.

    • Leo says:

I’ve never had points for this. But you could definitely ask – please report back if you do.

    • Alex W says:

F&B spend is elite qualifying even on IHG rewards stays. I thoight paid lounge access is treated the same?

    • TGLoyalty says:

F&B is elite qualifying and I though the club free gets put through as F&B

    • Tracy says:

Thanks for the replies. It has posted as non qualifying spend so will contact IHG and query it. Will report back….

  • rob says:

This abandonment of F redemptions really affects me as I was looking to book ICN to KUL any day now. Availability was really good in F but not J. Looks like I’ll need to route via Hong Kong now on CX if they don’t reinstate the fares. Gutted.

  • Liz says:

Just booked our Avis car hire for our 27 day USA road trip next year. When this offer was on a few months ago the quotes we got were more expensive with the £200 off than booking with Avis via the BA site. In Sept BA Avis were quoting £784 for Grp5 – I didn’t book it. Today BA are quoting £710, Amex Travel quoted £752 – so I’ve booked with Amex Travel and triggered the £200 off! Happy with that! 😀

    • TripRep says:

Hey Liz, you doing West Coast again? Pls drop me an email with your suggested route, thinking of Autumn 2020 for a trip.

      • Liz says:

Doing Denver round trip – Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, S Dakota, Nebraska, back to Denver – will email you with more info.

      • Jill (Kinkell) says:

We did this in Sept of this year. It was a fab road trip. We were in the states Liz mentions except Nebraska. Happy to share our itinerary with you .
