Berlin-based airline Germania goes bankrupt

Whilst it shouldn’t impact many HfP readers, it is worth knowing – as a sign of the parlous state of European aviation – that Berlin-based airline Germania filed for bankruptcy on Monday.

Originally a charter airline, it had moved heavily into scheduled services in recent years.  Whilst it did not fly to the UK, you may have seen or even flown on one of its aircraft last year as British Airways was using the airline to operate some BA flights from Gatwick over the Summer.

Finally, if you are taking a Virgin Atlantic flight during February, there is a profile of Head for Points in the current issue of in-flight magazine Vera.

No promo showing in my account. On the upside managed to get 2,500 bonus points on my travel package stay in Melbourne plus upgraded to suite for last few nights (incl lounge access) and had a top floor upgraded non-suite room for the first few nights. Combined with compo from Marriott Corporate and the 132k UA miles it was an excellent deal overall, even if it did mean I spent quite a bit of time hassling them!

Just to let you know several passengers hit by
Bankruptcy of Germania airline on direct flights from Jersey Channel Islands to Tenerife this weekend

    Waiting to hear what’s happening!!!!

It’s unfortunately an insurance job if you booked directly.

If you booked through other carriers, they will make alternative arrangements for you but you probably need to contact them ASAP.

      • Shoestring says:

There’s always potentially the S75 protection if they paid on a credit card:

        Using a credit card
Some airlines may charge more to accept payment on a credit card, but using a credit card when flights cost more than £100 each does give you some important protection under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. If things go wrong and if the airline is at fault, the credit card company shares legal responsibility with the airline. This means the consumer also has a claim against the credit card company for any losses. It should also mean you can claim for airline failure against the credit card company. You can refer disputes to the Financial Ombudsman if the credit card company disputes your claim.

        • Charlieface says:

People should be aware that there appears no reason why CC company shouldn’t be liable for consequential loss under S75, i.e. they need to pay for a new flight, not just refund the old. This is the same liability as the airline would have had. Often people are fobbed off in this regard, but put your foot down. Same happened with Monarch.

No promotions in either my wife’s or my account. Has anyone who has not had the email found it in their account? Or is it really just those targeted by the email?

    • Gill says:

No email here but promo available on website (not showing on app)

      • Sussex Bantam says:

Yep – same for me. No email but double points off on website

    • Dominic says:

No promotion for me in app or website (nor email). Although I am currently on a status challenge and have 18 nights booked already, which probably explains why.

  • Craig says:

OT: Managed to achieve Bronze status with BA, whoop whoop, it only required one small change from existing plans. It’s going to be useful for my next two LH 241 flights to be able to book seats before tactical allocation starts. Quick question, the TPs have hit and the website says I have achieved Bronze, how long does the displayed card and 7-day advance booking take to appear?

  • Young L says:

I think I got the worst Marriott promo so far: earn up to 36,000 bonus points after 12 eligible paid stays. 4th stay=12000 points; 8th stay=12000 points, 12th stay=12000 points.

    • Dominic says:

Pretty sure the worst thus far are the ones that have offered nothing at all!

    • JK says:

I got the same, and came to equally rant about what a poor promo I got! (I’m LTPPE).

And for anyone curious – I didn’t get an email, but found it in Promos section of website.

I have 4 stays booked before end of May, so I guess just the 12k bonus points for me. Doh!

  • Grant says:

OT – Heathrow Rewards and the 3,000 points for £150 spend bonus.

If I book parking when is the spend registered? The payment has gone through on my AMEX but the booking can be cancelled up to 24 hours in advance. No points or recognition of the booking showing on my Rewards account yet. I’m hoping it only registers on the day I park the car because the parking charge is less than the £150 spend and I need spend an additional £5 or so in T5 to trigger the bonus.

    • Andrew says:

Doesn’t it post once the transaction is complete (ie the planned departure date from the car park).

      • Grant says:

In which case I’ll need to make sure I spend at the airport on my return so the £150 goes through in the same day.

    Good morning,
Does anyone have any recommendations for the best seats on a Lufthansa 747-400 in business class, for a single traveller.
Also is the upper deck or lower deck the preferred choice?
    Thank you,

    • Czechoslovakia says:

Upstairs for sure. There is one seat on its own in the middle, ie not a pair. best seat on the plane for a solo traveler. Can’t remember the seat number of the top of my head, sorry, and on the Marriott Doha beach at the moment with limited signal. Try seatguru for the number.
