Berlin-based airline Germania goes bankrupt

Whilst it shouldn’t impact many HfP readers, it is worth knowing – as a sign of the parlous state of European aviation – that Berlin-based airline Germania filed for bankruptcy on Monday.

Originally a charter airline, it had moved heavily into scheduled services in recent years.  Whilst it did not fly to the UK, you may have seen or even flown on one of its aircraft last year as British Airways was using the airline to operate some BA flights from Gatwick over the Summer.

    No Marriott promotion for me…..

  • Alan says:

Got an email this morning from AMEX regarding my new gold card and offering a bonus for a supplementary cardmember. The offer was 3000 MR points – didn’t that used to be 5000?

  • N says:

    I got

“Get 3,000 bonus points after one stay*, 6,000 additional points after two stays and 9,000 more points after three stays.

*A stay is defined as consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity.”

Can one stay = one night?

    • Shoestring says:

Sure – it just means you won’t get 2x points if you stay 2 consecutive nights etc

    • Rob says:

Yes. But 3 back-to-back bookings of one night each at the same hotel will only be one stay.

    O/T – help needed.

Was booked to fly LHR-HKG via FRA on Thursday last week but LH cancelled to FRA-HKG leg and proposed a bonkers rerouting via Tokyo arriving 22hours behind the original schedule. I got them to rebook me on to CX direct from LHR to HKG arriving at more or less the same time as originally scheduled. No miles for the outbound have posted to Krisflyer (the return which did go ahead on LH metal has posted).

Will I be able to claim Avios for the CX leg or since it was ticketed by LH should I pursue with Krisflyer?

    • marcw says:

Contact Krisflyer and claim miles for original routing. Of course, separately, remember to claim your Avios (or other oneworld miles/points) for our CX flight.

    • RussellH says:

Was also booked on this cancelled FRA-HKG flight.
Was rebooked FRA-ZRH-HKG on LX, but this was cancelled while we were queueing for security, because the FRA-ZRH was late.
A very helpful Lufthansa service agent got us onto the FRA-SIN flight, with a connection SIN-HKG – which was delayed by about 3 hours.
Into HKG 10 hours late, will be contacting LHfor EU261 tomorrow…
Returned HKG-FRA-GLA today in first. Very nice cabin on the 747-8, and slept pretty well too. 8 hours in the First Class Terminal at FRA and can agree with just about everything Rob says about LH first class.

OT. Any recommendations for hotel in Singapore please? Last time stayed at Conrad. But thought the exec rooms very dated (would have suited an 80s Bond villain). Looking for somewhere central and with pool, doesn’t need to break the bank. Cheers.

    • Craig says:

Really enjoyed the IC Middle Road, very nice club lounge. The pool is small but useful after a busy day sightseeing and we had no problem with a 5pm checkout as a Spire Ambassador.

    • Olly says:

If you can’t stretch to a club room at the Pan Pacific Singapore, you won’t regret it. Before that it was the Fairmont but having tried the PP I would put that in the number one spot. Look at for deals which happen regularly and if you a subscription to Business Traveller magazine you will get platinum status which will help but not guarantee club lounge benefits, they only come with booking a club room. It’s a fantastic hotel.

    • Alan says:

When did you stay? They were all renovated start of last year, I enjoyed my recent stay but then have always found them generous with upgrades and to have a superb breakfast buffet!

      • Genghis says:

and ice cream at breakfast if you want it!

        • Alan says:

I can neither confirm or deny that I did that 😉

Now in Oslo where it’s -14C after 32C in Oz! CE staff forced a bottle of fiz down my throat on the last leg though 😉

    • James says:

The Conrad has just renovated the rooms. Have just stayed there and found it, and the rooms, very nce.

    • Mark Lyon says:

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Clarke Quay when i went, very small but functional rooms (just about managed a cot bed in the room), it has a glass sided infinity rooftop pool and great location, plus is wasn’t that expensive.

    • Allycat says:

Swissotel Merchant Court is good, stayed there a couple of times with a nice pool. Directly across the river from Clarke Quay with a footbridge to get there, and a 10-15 minute walk to Boat Quay which IMHO is better for dining

      • krys_k says:

Thanks for suggestions. Was actually thinking about Swissotel (Saw mention of small rooms at Holiday Inn that put me off). Was at Conrad about 2 years ago and the rooms hadn’t been renovated, the lounge was also closed and a lame temporary set up was on the swimming pool level floor. Very diligent desk staff – they stopped me taking a durian into the room – and quite right too (and got kitchen to wrap it up for me for a later pick up).

        • ankomonkey says:

Last year our Bangkok hotel had a ban on taking durian into the lift. It amused me. I doubt it would have been worse than some of the emissions in there after anyone had overdone it on the spiced breakfast sausage…

        • Alan says:

Renovation complete. They’ve kept pool lounge as the more relaxed one and the main lounge on the top floor is back open again.

        • Allycat says:

Stayed at the Westin in KL last year and there was a smell like a natural gas leak outside my room but it was on c.25th floor. I reported it to the concierge who investigated and when I returned later in the day I received fulsome apologies from the housekeeper who was trying to ventilate the lobby / corridor because someone had been eating durian in the room next to mine. Tasted it at the street market and its ok, and the smell was that gassy type smell rather than rotting flesh that some report. Not pleasant though.

    • Adam says:

Stayed in HI Atrium. Booked regular for 90ish Eur. Got upgraded to suite as a plat. Not far from centre and facilities are good.

    • Roger says:

Can recommend Marriott Tang Plaza on Orchard Road with its own Subway.

    • Anna B says:

Quincy. Super boutique hotel. Nice contemporary place, quiet location near main drag. Shopping area and aircon shopping centres. Two pieces of laundry per day in price. All good.

    • guesswho2000 says:

Conrad rooms have been Reno’d, and the Exec rooms are very nice, I checked out of one yesterday.

  • MarkH says:

OT – are there any tricks required to add a Virgin Flying club account to Amex MR account? I enter the 10 digit VC number, which it says doesn’t need a prefix, and click Add Account but it just reloads the airline travel partners page and doesn’t add the account.

    Any ideas?

    • paulm says:

Not aware of any, I had to use chat in the end to get them to link accounts

      • Rob says:

I was struggling to add Emirates to my wife’s account this week – again, no messing around with prefixes should be needed there.

    • KevMc says:

I seem to recall having the same problem when I tried to link mine – had to call Brighton in the end and they sorted it over the phone within a few mins. They said it was a frequent problem, but didn’t go into detail as to what it was.

    • Sam says:

What are the benefits of adding a flying club etc account to an Amex MR account? Is it just automatic redemption to that airline from Amex MR? Thanks

      • Alan says:

It just means it is a transfer option for you to send MR points across to VS. Never automatic with MR points though, only with ‘single reward currency’ cards like Nectar/BA/Marriott. Handy to have it pre-linked though as can take a few days for link to get set up in the first place so means you have it ready to go when you need it.

      • Charlieface says:

Its usually faster with an already linked account although that’s a moot point with Virgin as transfers are supposed to be instant.

  • Prune says:

OT- Sorry to drone on about this but has anybody else found themselves being issued a blue curve card who was an original black card (£50)? I have tried to contact them via the app and twitter but have had no reply. Its getting a little frustrating now.

    • Thomas Howard says:

I’m still waiting for a response to a message sent 28/01, I’ve had an automated “we’re busy” message but nothing else. It could be snowballing with people chasing responses to messages that haven’t been replied to.

    • Grant says:

I has a response today to a message sent only yesterday – I suspect because it was a relatively simply request to review my spending limits. The more complicated message I sent last week after the AMEX thing blew up hasn’t been replied to.

No surpise to learn that my spending limits won’t be increased until I demonstrate a varied spend history. Like many others, I’m finding myself stuck in a catch 22 situation with Curve. I can’t use it to settle larger expenses and so just end up using it for smaller day to day things like coffees, etc.

  • Jimbob says:

OT – As the Iberia site is down, I’ve bought a ticket for my wife to fly using my Iberia plus avios points, she is down as a beneficiary. I’m not flying with her, will that be ok?
