Crowne Plaza Manchester Oxford Road lounge review

PointBreaks has changed …..

Historically all PointBreaks rooms cost a flat 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night.

This was a great deal, except for the teeny tiny fact that the selection of hotels had been getting progressively worse for the last couple of years.  If you were looking for a good deal in a major tourist centre then you were going to be disappointed – although it was handy if you wanted a weekend break in Doncaster.  This has now changed.

The 95 hotels on the list below are priced at between 5,000 and 15,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night.  In general the quality of hotels included has gone up since the 5,000 point cap was removed, although at the end of the day it always depends on how the list fits around your travel plans.

What are the PointBreaks highlights?

Not surprisingly the better deals are at the 15,000 points level.  Of the hotels in Europe:

Crowne Plaza Manchester Oxford Road is BRAND NEW and very pleasant.  See photo above.  We reviewed Crowne Plaza Manchester Oxford Road late last year – click here.  It is well worth 15,000 points.

Holiday Inn Express London Hammersmith is also 15,000 points.  This is a decent option for anyone looking for a discounted option very close to central London, and of course breakfast is included.

The Holiday Inn Express in Hamburg is fairly new but Hamburg rates are generally low and you may still get a better deal by paying for somewhere better

InterContinental Sofia looks like the highest-end option in Europe This hotel is brand new (May 2018) and is a good excuse to try Bulgaria if you’ve never been.  There is a daily BA flight to Sofia which takes three hours.

How to book a PointBreaks room

PointBreaks availability is limited so book ASAP if you are interested.

You can book via the IHG PointBreaks page here or via the standard booking page here.

You are able to book these hotels for dates up to 31st May.

You allowed a maximum of two bookings per individual hotel. Each booking can be for as many nights as you want.  Remember that if you attempt to amend your booking later by dropping a night or two the whole booking may reprice at the full rate.

Doncaster always seems to get used as the antithesis of a holiday destination on this site!

Holiday Inn & Suites Clearwater Beach S-Harbourside is decent, rooms are a wee bit shabby, but it’s location is fabulous, at Indian Rocks Beach. I’m already booked for my third year in a row at this hotel in July, superb quiet beach, and only ten minutes from the much busier Clearwater by car, on a straight road. Flying in to Tampa, on BA of course ; )

Yes HI & HIX are seperate

between Manchester and Brussels by what method of transport?

    • Nick M says:

      Planes, trains or automobiles!

They were example cities to mean the southern half of the UK or northern half of the continent… somewhere relatively easy to get to from Kent (with a couple of young children) without needing to spend a whole day travelling

Checked last night for Staybridge Suites Niagara-On-The-Lake and all the weekend breaks had gone apart from one. So we’re booked for 2 nights at the start of April. Looking forward to see the Falls!

Can someone please advise how I can book one room for a family of four? I have just started collecting IHG points and am wondering if the reward scheme is best suited for a couples as opppsed to families? Thanks

    • Rob says:

IHG is not family friendly. Two reasons – only base rooms are usually available for redemption (and 95% of the time only sleep 2 or 3 max) and you don’t get free breakfast even with top tier status, leading to events like the £96 breakfast bill I got at the InterCon O2 a couple of years ago.

Marriott is better because many (not all) hotels let you pay a little extra in cash to upgrade. This is part of the booking process. For example, we’ve done JW Marriott Venice a few times, and for a €200 supplement per night (cost varies by date) on top of the usual 40k points you can get a big €500 Junior Suite which sleeps four.

Whilst some IHG hotels have standard rooms that can take four they are rare (HI Camden can do it in London, for eg) and most of the time you need 2 rooms.

        Thanks Rob

Quite a few of the Holiday Inns (at least of the small sample I’ve looked at) have a family room option as a standard redemption – either two-doubles or double + sofa

But would agree, Marriott seem to be the most likely option with 2 doubles and/or the ability to upgrade to a different room type

IHG Platinum status got us one drink/snack for a 3 night stay last week – vs Hilton Gold which was 2 drinks per night for the duration of the stay (+ some coffees etc too) in addition to (full) breakfast in the restaurant.

Managed to book a Staybridge Suites in Texas for the last night of our road trip in April – will help save a few dollars.
