British Airways Gold Guest List members can now take five guests into airport lounges

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

British Airways has announced that Gold Guest List members (see this article for how you get to become Gold Guest List) can permanently bring five guests into a lounge.

This has been trialled over recent school holiday periods and clearly went well.  It will not be a total free for all though:

Gold Guest List British Airways lounge guests

all guests must be travelling on the same flight, but not necessarily the same booking

at busy periods you may be told to use Galleries Club instead of Galleries First

it does not allow Concorde Room access

it only applies at British Airways lounges

it only applies when flying on BA and not a partner airline

the full party can use the First Wing in Terminal 5 but at all other departure points, including Heathrow T3 and Gatwick, additional guests must use the standard security line

It remains to be seen how much with leads to increased overcrowding.  During school holidays this benefit was generally used to bring in children, but with it opened up to a ‘year round’ benefit we may find more business travellers bringing in a group of colleagues.

OT: Have MR saved up, what Maldives resort do I use it on? Going for 5 nights so 1 night free. Have the hotel status from Amex Platinum. So Conrad/Waldorf will get me free breakfast right, and W/St. Regis will charge. I guess I need to factor in getting to the resort as well.

Anyone been to more than one / heard good / bad things about each one?

    Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
    Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi
    W Maldives
    St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort

    • marcw says:

I wouldn’t go to anyone (there are better, nicer and cheaper – and not isolated – opportunities elsewhere)… but if the point is using your points in Maldives, I think you should aim for a Hilton family hotel, with Gold you get free breakfast and other special offers for Gold/Platinum members (free nibbles/happy hour…). WA hasn’t opened yet, and it’s very expensive points wise. Conrad is cheaper, points wise, but according to TripAdvisor is going “downhill” (new manager).

There’s an user that comments quite often about the Conrad, he might give you more specific info.

      • Whizz68 says:

Lol, the commenter TripRep, is always hyping up th Conrad resort.

        • marcw says:

Yes, he is (was?) biased but he will tell you what to expect as a Gold member (?). I don’t think he’s been there since the new manager arrived in office (which seems to be quite stingy, with a money saving attitude – according to TA and FlyerTalk). There was also the drama with the cruise.

        • BJ says:

I think he gets a complimentary G&T for each day he comments on Rangoly 🙂

        • mike says:

i noticed that his comments about it have decreased – I think he has taken the constructive criticism and adapted his commentary

      • Qwerty Bertie says:

Hopefully lots of complaints having been going in since the new manager started. People like that are the worst thing that can happen to an offering and its reputation. Much quicker to decimate a business than to establish it.

    • Lee says:

My own experience, I would choose W over St. Regis, snorkelling is amazing. But I was Platinum when I visited W with 60000 points per night. Not sure if it still worth it now with much higher points required

  • Andrew says:

    Bits:- IHG

IHG have added a further line to my line-up of offers for this season’s what used to be known as “Accelerate”.

Email came through at 23:02 last night:-

“Andrew, you have an additional 4,000 bonus points waiting for you”

Stay 2 times and get 4,000 bonus points
Complete two stays and earn 4,000 bonus points.

I’ve already got one booking made, so not sure if that will count. towards one of the stays for the bonus.

    • ChrisC says:

I got a similar email offering 6k points.

I’ve already achieved the number of stays (3) needed for the points so I’m hoping they’ll just post automatically.

  • Jon says:

I have it too. Is it for one use, at one business of my choice?

    • Chris says:

Yes, according to mine it’s only valid for one purchase at one business (unlike the regular December event which seems to be any number of purchase, but only one purchase per business).

  • Qwerty Bertie says:

Regarding Shop Small: it’s not so small. I’ll be having lunch at a Wagamama that is on the map.

    • Qwerty Bertie says:

PS: that will take my cash back total across my platinum and its supp. to £695 so far since August. Another endorsement for the apparently novel concept of keeping it long-term…Imagine if I had lunch there or at another eligible place every weekday. That would be worth about £175 by the time the offer expires.

  • N says:

Amex Chat: “Actually this Shop Small offer is only targeted to a certain demography of Card Members. This is not available to everyone to perform. We generally run our annual Shop Small Promotion around 1st to 15th December each year. You can enjoy it then.”

    • Russ says:

” You can enjoy it then.”

Ho Ho Ho…can we now. Too kind 🙂

I don’t work in marketing but the armchair expert in me says the idea in marketing is to sell stuff and grow your customer base. For marketing people amongst us why don’t amex release all the offers at once so we can buy people’s stuff and expand amex’s reach?

    • Lady London says:

That sounds like language from an offshore call center.

  • William DD says:

BITS: Thinking of applying for IHG card, how does it treat curve purchases? Not cash withdrawals and all that faffle, just normal purchases.

    • William DD says:

Also, just tried the eligibility checker and it said ‘you are not eligible to apply’ – Any reason for this?

      • Lumma says:

With creation, I’m eligible to apply for both the IHG cards but not their own branded or Asda credit cards. Seems to make no sense.

Saying that, currently using the eligibility checker for American Express, my chance of acceptance ranges from 9/10 (Platinum, premium BA, green and basic) to 3/10 (Nectar)

    • Rob says:

      Totally fine.

  • LewisB says:

OT: Just had an email from Amex about getting 9,000 avios for a referral. Doesn’t look like the scheme is going anytime soon then 🙂

  • Rob Walker says:

Yeah got the email this morning. It finally pushed me to cancel it. I haven’t used it in over a year. I was able to do it from the contact section of the mobile site. It didn’t even make me write a message. I just chose I want to cancel my card, picked from the list of reasons and I got confirmation that my account would be cancelled.
