Flybe to close or shrink four UK bases as it cuts back on jet aircraft operations

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Flybe has announced that it will close its bases at Cardiff and Doncaster Sheffield at the end of the Summer season in late October.

Flights using jet aircraft from Exeter and Norwich will also cease with only turboprop routes remaining.  Services from Norwich operated by Eastern Airways under its Flybe franchise are not impacted.

Some turboprop services at Cardiff and Doncaster Sheffield will continue but only where they can be served from a remaining base.

Flybe to close four UK bases

These four airports are seen as underperforming and not part of the plan by the new owners, Connect Airways, to primarily feed passengers to major hub airports.

Our article covering the full details of the Flybe takeover by the Virgin-led consortium is here.

wow! do we know how long it will be displayed for?

    • BJ says:

There’s enough dinosaurs in T5 already, another will not make any difference.

    • BJ says:

Thanks, I’ll just make it then as I’m connecting T5 on 3rd.

      • Chris says:

Looks from the promo material as if he’ll be landside at check-in, so you might not be able to spot him if you’re only connecting…

      • John says:

The best way to connect at Heathrow is landside (if British (and maybe EU/EEA) and not domestic to international)

      • BJ says:

Thanks @Chris. too bad, anything to break the usual monotony of terminals is welcome…think tbe teddy in Doha or the dragon (or whatever it’s supposed to be) in Bangkok. They spoiled the impact of the latter tnough after they centralised security, they shhould shift it landside before check-in.or before ramp to arrivals immigration.

@John, how do you figure that? For the last two years on connecting from EDI, I’ve always been dropped at a gate just downstairs from departures, all that is required is boarding pass for connecting flights. Before that though I do recall long walks down almost deserted coridors to security which was a real pain.

      • Stu N says:

        @BJ/ @JOhn

T5 Domestic – T5 International is easiest airside as there is quick boarding pass check and you come out at Boots near Gate A8. No security so if you come into a low numbered A gate then you can be airside in less than 5 mins.

The International-Domestic airside route used to be a pain but since this was improved a couple of years ago by addition of e-Gates and segregation of EU and non-EU arrivals it is much better. The downside is it feeds you into the normal security queues which can be a pain. We usually still go landside and back in via First Wing – it’s not necessarily any quicker than airside if airside is running smoothly but it’s more walking and less queuing which I much prefer, and it’s more reliable time-wise.

      • BJ says:

        @Stu, yes this is my experience.At k
least two years since I had any issues. Also, I’ve been fortunate to arrive into UK at times with short queues. Why BA does not have priority lames though is beyond me.*

      • Lady London says:

Do they dismantle it to move it?

      • Alan says:

Agree @Stu – although sadly don’t have First Wing access any more, but couldn’t really justify hanging onto Gold. Fast Track connections pretty useless, every time I’ve done it recently I’ve found the security lane shut and been added to main T5 North security! Definitely tend to find it faster to go landside then back in – if only the eGates were more reliable at reading my passport! (I’ve got one of the ones that had a pretty flimsy photo page that wasn’t fully laminated to the spine so tends to slightly fold over on the UK design of eGate)

      • BJ says:

Where’s the fast track on connections? Could not find any, I thought it was scrapped.

        • Alan says:

I just mean for security – first escalator up is meant to drop you at priority security at the south end of North security (if that makes sense at all!)

The fast track immigration is gone.

  • sayling says:

    “New” species

    LOL

    • Paul says:

      It’s called customerserviceosarous!

Seems appropriate between this, the retro livery and the countries apparent desire to return to the 18th century, it continues the theme of living in the past. Something England excels.at.

    • Cat says:

I was about to make exactly the same point!

A newly discovered or identified species, perhaps!

O/T: I have 3 BA membership cards available which I could offer to readers of HFP. One Gold and two Silver memberships are currently available. If anyone is interested, please drop me an email: partnercard@gmx.com

    • The Original Nick says:

Hi Mike. Why not pass them to Rob to set up a competition instead?

      • TGLoyalty says:

Because by available I’m sure he means for compensation.

      • Rob says:

Because they are worth quite a lot of money? Pretty sure Mike isn’t giving them away.

I’m not deleting his comment though because it is more environmentally friendly than doing a mileage run 🙂

        • BJ says:

I think I may still have a genuine BOAC cabin bag in my mums attic if she hasn’t thrown it out. Is that worth anything?

        • BSI1978 says:

I’m being really thick perhaps but how does one come by these memberships via kosher means…? I thought these levels of membership could only be achieved via Tier points etc. and buying pre-loaded cards etc. seems to run contrary to this…?

        • Stu N says:

Gold Guest List get partner cards (1 Gold and 2 Silver IIRC).

        • Alex D says:

          Very true

OT I’m selling my car email car@hfp.com

  • s879 says:

OT: Amex Platinum is showing just one offer since I activated it a week ago. Previously I have seen many offers loading after a couple of days or so. Do I need to do something on my end?

  • Paul says:

Flybe don’t look like they will be around much longer. Lots of cancellations yesterday followed by an insipid statement from the CEO who made her remarks in front of an unfortunate sign.

    • Rob says:

A lot of pilots and crew left when it looked like it might go under, and Easter (private schools broke up yesterday) is a pinch period for them now with many staff on leave.

It will be an interesting case study in whether a bit of Virgin rebranding actually makes any difference to a business …

      • Save East Coast Rewards says:

It worked for VTEC 😁 Although the difference between East Coast trains and Flybe is East Coast lost a good loyalty scheme, but arguably if Flybe accepts Flying Club and offers tier points and status benefits (particularly lounge access) then their loyalty proposition will be better than it is currently. But if Flybe’s relationship with Flying Club is similar to Avios (earn/spend but no status benefits) then it would be worse.

        • BJ says:

Any update on a new scheme for LNER or are we stuck with nectar?

  • Nick G says:

Great so no more DSA to JER…..I’ll miss that route

  • Nick G says:

So no more DSA to JER I’ll miss that route

  • Dave Barron says:

Travelling through T5 on Saturday so my two kids will be delighted to see a dinosaur!

In terms of T5 lounges. I know I can use the Aspire with my Priority Pass but grateful if someone could verify my thoughts – with an Amex Plat am I correct that I could also access a Plaza Premium in T5? Wife and I plus 2 young kids are free if using my platinum and her supplementary platinum? I’m sure I’ve preciously read this and that less busy?

Am I also correct in thinking there’s no Amex security fast track any longer at T5?

Also any advice on using a lounge at Toronto would be most welcome!

    Thanks

    • paulm says:

Yes you can use Plaza premium with just your Platinum. 2 cards ok for 4 people.

    • Rob says:

      Correct and correct.

Not a lot of Toronto experience but that heavy Plaza Premium territory so you’ll find something decent.

    • Lady London says:

Plaza Premium. Yes you will both get the accesses required. I would sooner sit in Gordon Ramsay’s and pay for a three-course meal with wine, or even the noisy Pret a Manger open area on the ground floor, than ever go into Aspire in T5 again. It’s that poor. Plaza Premium is fine although it’s objectively considerably worse than No.1, QF and CX in T3.

    • Alan says:

Definitely go Plaza Premium at T5 rather than Aspire – the latter is overcrowded with poor food choices whenever I’ve visited.

    • Alan says:

PS as Rob says many PP at YYZ!
