How does the RED by Dufry duty free loyalty scheme work?

This is our review of the RED by Dufry duty free loyalty scheme.

You might not know the name Dufry, but it is the dominant global duty free retailer.  As well as owning World Duty Free in the UK, it also owns:

  • Dufry (various locations)
  • World Duty Free (outside the UK, it is in Western Europe, Americas, Middle East, Asia)
  • Nuance (Europe, Asia, North America)
  • Hellenic Duty Free (Greece)
  • Colombian Emerald (Carribean, Central America, Norwegian Cruise Line vessels)
  • Duty Free Uruguay (Uruguay)
  • Hudson (US & Canada)
  • Duty Free Shop Argentina (Argentina)
  • RegStaer (Russia)

Basically, you can’t avoid them.

Red by DUFRY review

Dufry has its own app-based loyalty programme called RED By Dufry.  The key benefit of downloading this app is that you get a 5% discount on purchases at selected Dufry storesYou can join here.

It has continued to add new benefits, and there is now a link with DragonPass (the airport lounge access card) which is very interesting.

If you buy at World Duty Free or Dufry on a regular basis, you could make decent savings by signing up for RED By Dufry.

What do I save?

At Heathrow, the discount for Silver level members – which is what you get when you sign up – is 5%.  Tobacco purchases are excluded, as are airport arrivals stores.

This makes it a no-brainer to sign up if you ever make purchases at World Duty Free stores in UK airports or from other Dufry businesses abroad.

With $400 of spend you reach Gold level, where your discount rises to 7%.  At $1000 of spend, over a two year period, you reach Platinum.

At Heathrow, I imagine that you will continue to receive Heathrow Rewards points on top of your RED discount.

How it works

Register for RED by Dufry via this link.  That’s it!  Once you have an account you can download the app and log in.

The app displays a QR code which can be scanned in-store to ensure you get your discount and your points.

You can add your Iberia Plus or Vueling Club Avios number during the sign up process or later.  It is under the ‘More’ tab on the sign-up page.

How do I earn Avios?

Iberia Plus and Vueling Club are partners with RED By Dufry.

If you link your Iberia Plus or Vueling Club account with the RED By Dufry app, you will earn:

  • 3 Avios per €1 as a Silver RED member
  • 6 Avios per €1 as a Gold RED member
  • 9 Avios per €1 as a Platinum RED member

Avios earning now appears to be available globally – it was originally just offered at Spanish airports.  Participating brands are World Duty Free, Canariensis, Michael Kors, Hudson, Victoria’s Secret, Superdry, Express Duty Free, Gap, Collection and Boutique.

(EDIT: there is debate about whether this is correct. The Iberia website no longer mentions a restriction but it appears that it is in the RED rules. You may still be restricted to Spain.)

Once the Avios appear in your Iberia Plus or Vueling Club account you can move them to your British Airways Executive Club account, immediately and for free, via ‘Combine My Avios’.

How do I get airport lounge access?

Dufry has a partnership with DragonPass which is a competitor to Priority Pass / Lounge Club / LoungeKey, all of which are owned by Collinson.

As a Silver member of RED by Dufry – which is what you get just for signing up – you can pay for access to any DragonPass lounge for $25.  Virtually every lounge in Priority Pass is in DragonPass PLUS some others.  In particular, the Plaza Premium lounge in Heathrow Terminal 5 is in DragonPass.

I don’t think there is any cheaper way to get into the Plaza Premium lounge in Terminal 5 – which is NOT accessible with Priority Pass – than by paying $25 via RED by Dufry.

Gold and Platinum members of RED by Dufry get reduced cost lounge access at DragonPass sites. Gold is $20 and Platinum just $10.

Conclusion

Year after year, RED by Dufry gets more interesting.

Initially it didn’t cover the UK … now it does

Initially there was no option to buy cheap lounge access …. now it has the DragonPass tie-up

If you are an occasional buyer of duty free at UK airports then it worth signing up purely for the 5% cash discount at World Duty Free stores, plus a handful of Avios on top.  The link to register is here.

    Hi Rob. Your Nectar American express review is inaccurate even though updated. Just re-read it and it says about getting 2 free lounge passes which is not a card benefit. Also it still says the amex gold sign-up bonus is 20k points rather than 10k as it is now.
    Thought it worth flagging up!

    Can someone please point me in the right direction to find a telephone number for BA so that I can call them at midnight to secure my return portion of a 2for1 companion redemption? I booked the outbound flight yesterday and the return dates will be released in the next week or so and I want to call and book my return flight. I have searched but cannot find which call centre I need to call. I recall reading on here that you should call abroad as the flights are released locally first (so presumably asia gets them first? Or have I got that wrong?)

      Japan may be open first as it is early Monday over there at midnight GMT here. They speak English fine BTW.

      If you have enough Avios in your account you can just buy the two seats you need on the flights you want at 00:01 then call a UK call centre at a reasonable hour and ask them to join your new reward booking with your old one and apply the voucher. You get some Avios back. Taxes and charges may also need adjusting.

      That’s wrong. They are released at midnight GMT (so 1am BST now) but the UK call centre is shut so you need to ring elsewhere.

        But the best advice is probably above which is if you have the Avios book as one way redemptions and sort out the admin of joining them to the voucher in the morning.

        If you do phone you probably want to be on the line a couple mins before so they are set to go as the clock hits 1am BST.

      The easiest way I remember is 1-800-AIRWAYS (+1 800 2479297) for the US call centre. I’ve used them before and they know what they’re doing.

    Rob, the app is absolutely, appalling, almost unbelievably useless.

    It falls into an inescapable feedback loop making a login impossible. Even when logged in first-time setup there are still no other panes accessible.

    This is something I want to use – looking online there is no official guide whatsoever to mating it with Dragonpass – and a Spanish blog seems to imply there are quite a few steps when all is working perfectly.

    The app on iOS is peppered with reviews expressing exactly the same silly problem: the app is completely broken for many. My settings are up-to-date and their website exhibits this exact same problem.

    The app seems to be a very badly implemented hosting of parts of their site.

    Could you please reach out to RED because this doesn’t seem an isolated issue?

    Even with reinstall, new account, etc, it keeps looping back hysterically.

      The App works perfectly on my Android phone…..Iberia number was easy to link to. No problems using it at all.

      I had issues a few months ago and emailed them and sent screen shots of the problem. I had deleted the app and reinstalled and still had problems. It was only when i did an update on my phone and reinstalled the app it worked fine and has been fine since.

    I am confused. So should I call Japan at 0100am or the UK? It’s the first time I have done this and want to do it right. The date I want is not released for another week or so, but I’d like to set myself an alarm/reminder. I was under the impression that I would need to call to book and link the return portion to my existing booking, to utilize the 2for1 companion voucher?…..

        One final question…I currently have enough avios for inbound economy tickets (spent the majority on first outbound tickets!) but am due more avios shortly which would give me enough for premium economy.
        Am I able to get the economy tickets and then upgrade to premium when they come up and when i have enough avios?
        This is using a 2for1 companion voucher as well.

    OT: I have a BA Household Account to which I added both my parents a few years ago. My parents are now in the US and are US citizens. Do I need to remove them from my account? I do want to make a redemption for my mum traveling from U.K. to Middle East with me but I think it will cause an issue at the airport as the system will ask for an ESTA visa to check in etc. I want her to travel with BA from US to the UK too but that will be a cash ticket not Avios. Can I not move some Avios to her account and then remove her from the HHA list? That way she can change her country and address and then redeem miles for the booking. Is it easy to change the address on the account including the country? Please advise.

      No need to remove them from the HHA. It makes absolutely no difference whose BA account the ticket comes from, or what address is linked to the BA account.

          UK address stops them getting the US BA credit card though.

            Rob will check in be an issue? If they are expecting them to be in the U.K., would they require ESTA visa confirmation or evidedence or return ticket. She could just skip online check in though. I remember I was going through Norwegian Air and checkin staff required evidence of return ticket to UK as if booked return via miles as a one way with another airline.

            If you’re a US resident you don’t need to prove your leaving the US again, obviously. If you’re not, you do.

            I don’t entirely follow why you think there is any trace on your ticket of the country of origin of the BA account that booked it.

      You select the airport you are at and then the option to buy passes for lounges comes up on the benefits page.

    Rob. I agree with some comments here. The app is like Theresa May. It says I am Red and I am actually a Platinum. That said, I am buying Jo Malone in T5 frequently for my friend in JNB. 30% off is not to be turned down, furthermore I earn AVOIS. Despite the app, the discounts for me are enough. I did not realise all the other benefits. It is quite generous. As a word of caution, make sure that you tell the cashiers straightaway you have a Dufry card. It cannot be applied afterwards. Too late.
