Crowne Plaza Manchester Oxford Road lounge review

PointBreaks has changed …..

Historically all PointBreaks rooms cost a flat 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night.

This was a great deal, except for the teeny tiny fact that the selection of hotels had been getting progressively worse for the last couple of years. If you were looking for a good deal in a major tourist centre then you were going to be disappointed – although it was handy if you wanted a weekend break in Doncaster.  This changed last year.

The 95 hotels on the list below are priced at between 5,000 and 15,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night. In general the quality of hotels included has gone up since the 5,000 point cap was removed, although at the end of the day it always depends on how the list fits around your travel plans.

What are the PointBreaks highlights?

Not surprisingly the better deals are at the 15,000 points level.  What is surprising this time is the large number of UK hotels – and some of them are pretty good.

Crowne Plaza London – Albert Embankment is a recent opening which we haven’t visited yet.  The location is a bit odd – it advertises itself as 10 minutes to Vauxhall underground station, which is not exactly a selling point – but for 15,000 points per night across the Summer you won’t go wrong.

The two Manchester hotels are new. I visited the Hotel Indigo before it opened (click here) and it looked great.  I reviewed the Staybridge Suites here.  15,000 points is a good deal here.

At 10,000 points per night, you can’t argue about Holiday Inn Express London – Newbury Park (on the Central Line), Holiday Inn Express London – Wimbledon South (directly opposite Colliers Wood tube) or, near Heathrow, Holiday Inn London – Heathrow M4, Jct.4.

We don’t have any experience of any of the European hotels except for Crowne Plaza Lille which is next to the Eurostar station and which Rob says was impressive when it opened (this is a few years ago).  Crowne Plaza Porto could be interesting for a weekend break and offers real value at 10,000 points.

How to book a PointBreaks room

PointBreaks availability is limited so book ASAP if you are interested.

You can book via the IHG PointBreaks page here or via the standard booking page here.

You are able to book these hotels for dates up to 31st August.

If you are trying to book a reward night for a date up to 31st August and it is pricing at the full rate, the hotel has sold its allocation of PointBreaks nights.

You allowed a maximum of two bookings per individual hotel. Each booking can be for as many nights as you want. Remember that if you attempt to amend your booking later by dropping a night or two the whole booking may reprice at the full rate.

  • Alex says:

Boom! Week at the end of August in the CP Porto booked for our family of 4.

    • Dave says:

I’m tempted by this hotel too, did you book 2 rooms?

      • Alex says:

Yep – a double and a twin. Quick call to front desk after booking ensured connecting rooms.

    • Boon says:

CP Porto is really good value. Hotel is a little worn but still a solid 4 star standard.

Platinum don’t get lounge access though.

It is a bit out of the main tourist sights, but good for car hire (Avis is just across the road) and Ubers are cheap in Porto.

      • Michael Jennings says:

It’s a bit of a distance from the river and the older parts of town, but the Boavista area that it is in is quite nice, and as well as ubers being cheap the hotel is close to the metro. Looks a bargain to me.

    • Optimus Prime says:

I was tempted too but I have an Ambassador voucher expiring in August and had decided to use it in IC Porto.

  • pommy ray says:

do these points bookings count towards the accelerate 3 different brands target? I have a feeling not!

    • pommy ray says:

think the points and cash option may knock out the two: the points and cash target and towards 3 different brands.

      • Rob says:

No. Any Accelerate target involving a points redemption will ONLY trigger that specific target and does not count towards other targets.

  • Nick says:

I have stayed at the IC in KL, it was decent if a bit tired but I’d say that 15000 is a great price for that. The lounge was great, and if memory serves the cost of an updgrade to club was pretty insignificant. The one in South Korea looks bonkers – it’s got a ski jump!

  • Alex W says:

Well the Crowne Plaza London – Albert Embankment didn’t last long. Can’t find availability on any dates I wanted.

    • Brian says:

I got a room for tomorrow night about 10 minutes ago.

      • Memesweeper says:

The top floor restaurant is worth a look if your budget will stretch!

    • BJ says:

Most dates were gone within 5 minutes of release, I had my dates available and then they were gone before I could check them out. Availability calander at 10 minutes was showing just odd days here and there.

  • Tracy says:

Was hoping for Indigo in Manchester for the 15th June for a concert – no chance lol

  • Shoestring says:

You can avoid all this nonsense by buying yourself a place in the sun, somewhere you like.

Bought this place back in 2000, when I was 37 🙂

    • Me casa says:

      🍷🍷🎶red red wine🎶 🎼😄📉🏚

      • Shoestring says:

…and not many of us would buy a place in the sun in Dubai! 🙂

    • BJ says:

Off to look for someplace next week 🙂

    • Jonah says:

And go year in year out to the same place…No thanks.

      • Lacking imagination says:

+1, cant imagine just visiting one place for 20 years 6+ times a year.

        • BJ says:

Depends, some folks like a home from home in a different environment.

          • Lady London says:

+ that kind of choice may work particularly well if you have kids.

          • John says:

Went to Australia twice a year as a kid… boring, all we ever did was gardening and repairing the next bit of the house to fall apart

        • Kipto says:

          +1

    • Lady London says:

OK I’ll bite. So where is this place, Shoestring? Was guessing PT?

      • ankomonkey says:

@Lady London – it’s a closely guarded secret. Only Harry, Rob, Anika and now Rhys know. Even Emyr and Genghis don’t know this…

        • Shoestring says:

Given enough clues away over the years – but let’s move on.

Lacking imagination? Not really, we both travelled extensively sub 40, now we have spent 15 or so years going mostly to the same place in the sun (which I like a lot!) & my wife is recently showing signs of boredom as in wanting Rome LY, Verona, Hamburg & Sevilla this year – her dear ma is on the point of moving on to a better place so the big reason for coming here so often disappears soon. Just in time for kids to go to university and some LH travel to kick in again.

Though I do like Europe – we’ve got some of the very best places to visit in the world right on our doorstep, I’d far rather go to good bits of Spain than the USA, for example.

Various SE Asia and Aus/ NZ top of the LH list.

  • Gavin says:

Holiday Inn Express Wimbledon South is a great value option for London. Within 1 minute walk of Colliers Wood which is on the night tube service at weekends and only 25-30 mins into central London. Plus you have Tooting/Balham/Clapham on the tube very close for a good selection of restaurants, bars etc.

    • BJ says:

I thought this one was 10k regular price.

    • Gregor says:

A note of caution: Reward Night bookings during Wimbledon fortnight don’t seem to be cancellable in the sense that yes you’ll get your points back but they’ll charge your card for one night at the flexible rate (or so the IHG c/s rep told me). Not that there are many Reward Nights left for that period….

  • Rooster says:

Don’t bother with “The Met Leeds” its worn out and none of the windows closed properly at all seem like the original windows from when they were built and not repaired, staff aren’t trained to IHG standard either

    • BrianW says:

Agreed, I stayed twice earlier in the year for a total of £90 to trigger the free night voucher (spent on a £480 night at the IC Park Lane) but I wasn’t impressed at all, bit Fawlty Towers. There are Holiday Inn’s nearby that are superior in many ways.

    • Relaxo says:

Shit, I just booked 2 rooms there when I’m at the cricket WC in headingley. Cash price was £170 for the sat night. Hopefully decent enough just for a sleep.

      • Rob says:

If Met was charging £170 then you can assume that everywhere else was in the same range so you’ve got a good deal, especially if you’re just pitching up.

        • Crafty says:

Met Leeds is usually a good 30% cheaper than the Doubletree, Hilton, Marriott, Crowne Plaza and Park Plaza. Which is a bit of a clue.

      • Rooster says:

I still believe instead of bottles of water we were given tap water in a refillable glass bottle.

Literally the windows don’t close properly and there was construction work starting early as well with no hope of blocking any sound.

Corridors feel like something from 50 years ago.

Only stayed for the free night voucher
