Crowne Plaza Manchester Oxford Road lounge review

PointBreaks has changed …..

Historically all PointBreaks rooms cost a flat 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night.

This was a great deal, except for the teeny tiny fact that the selection of hotels had been getting progressively worse for the last couple of years. If you were looking for a good deal in a major tourist centre then you were going to be disappointed – although it was handy if you wanted a weekend break in Doncaster.  This changed last year.

The 95 hotels on the list below are priced at between 5,000 and 15,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night. In general the quality of hotels included has gone up since the 5,000 point cap was removed, although at the end of the day it always depends on how the list fits around your travel plans.

What are the PointBreaks highlights?

Not surprisingly the better deals are at the 15,000 points level.  What is surprising this time is the large number of UK hotels – and some of them are pretty good.

Crowne Plaza London – Albert Embankment is a recent opening which we haven’t visited yet.  The location is a bit odd – it advertises itself as 10 minutes to Vauxhall underground station, which is not exactly a selling point – but for 15,000 points per night across the Summer you won’t go wrong.

The two Manchester hotels are new. I visited the Hotel Indigo before it opened (click here) and it looked great.  I reviewed the Staybridge Suites here.  15,000 points is a good deal here.

At 10,000 points per night, you can’t argue about Holiday Inn Express London – Newbury Park (on the Central Line), Holiday Inn Express London – Wimbledon South (directly opposite Colliers Wood tube) or, near Heathrow, Holiday Inn London – Heathrow M4, Jct.4.

We don’t have any experience of any of the European hotels except for Crowne Plaza Lille which is next to the Eurostar station and which Rob says was impressive when it opened (this is a few years ago).  Crowne Plaza Porto could be interesting for a weekend break and offers real value at 10,000 points.

How to book a PointBreaks room

PointBreaks availability is limited so book ASAP if you are interested.

You can book via the IHG PointBreaks page here or via the standard booking page here.

You are able to book these hotels for dates up to 31st August.

If you are trying to book a reward night for a date up to 31st August and it is pricing at the full rate, the hotel has sold its allocation of PointBreaks nights.

You allowed a maximum of two bookings per individual hotel. Each booking can be for as many nights as you want. Remember that if you attempt to amend your booking later by dropping a night or two the whole booking may reprice at the full rate.

Heads up on Edinburgh options. Neither are in the city centre. I guess you could walk from City West to the West End in about 20 minute but regular buses along there would only be a 5 minute ride. HIX Leith I think I remember seeing amongst all the new flats out on the waterfront. If so, a bit dead out there, some not so bright planners forgot to add amenities to the immediate surroundings. Still, not far from places to eat and drink in Leith. It’s a fair bus ride to Princes street though with many stops along the way. The route can be horrendous in rush hour.

    • sunguy says:

and thats why the original plan was to have the tram head down there….trust the council to mess things up….20 years later…and it probably still wont be complete!

      • Michael Jennings says:

They’ve now approved and funded the tram extension to Leith, so it will almost certainly now happen. It won’t be there in time for this offer, alas. (I have friends in Leith, so that would actually work quite well for me. The trouble is I went and visited them a couple of months back, so I don’t really need to do it again quite this soon).

    • Gerry says:

I agree with this to a certain degree. The City West Hotel is a bit out of the way, but on main transport route. Shopping area opposite.
HIX Leith is also by shopping centre, Royal Yacht Britannia is 5 mins walk, 2xMichelin * restaurants and many other options 10 mins walk and Leith Shore is a great place to mooch about, including the Saturday Market. Transport links to HIX also v good, before tram system arrives!

Anyone interested in flea markets, the big Braderie de Lille fair is Sat 31 August & Sun 1 September and it seems like it’s just a short walk from the CP Lille – Euralille to edge of the market.

    • Adam says:

IC KL was the worst IC experience I ever had. Upgraded to club room without club access (plat amb). The room was literally dusty. Sink was cracked, toilet brownyellowish and should have been replaced years ago. Tile was coming off. Reported all this, got somebody to clean the dust and as a gesture of goodwill got 1.000 points that have taken a month to post!

    • Lady London says:

Hi @John, we used to do the Braderie each year. Stayed at La Tradition right in town and after that Madame held the room for us from year to year. You can park on the street near if you’re early enough before the barriers go up.

Are you into that kind of thing here too? We were.

  • jtz says:

Decisions decision…..IC KL for 15k points £90 a night, or DT KL for 20k points £60 a night??
Tempted to go for DT, any ideas?

    • Matt says:

Book Shangri-La through Bon Vivant and you get breakfast and $100 credit (including 1 night stays). Room rate is probably around £90.

      • jtz says:

I’ve stayed there before with club access, and did enjoy it, will ask for prices, thanks!
Was just thinking if IC was good use of points V DT cash price and free breakfast because of gold.

    • Crafty says:

Neither, Hilton KL is a brilliant hotel and normally great value for cash.

      • TripRep says:

        Crafty +1 it’s terrific.

£60, upgraded to a suite, incredible breakfast in main restaurant, classly exec lounge, outdoor pool with bar, what’s not to like on a one night stopover on the way back from Oz?

        • TripRep says:

Also on the express line from the airport, bellboys took our bags from the hotel to the train, amazing service

        • Crafty says:

We had a return visit there for 1 night during our 87 day Asia trip at the beginning of this year. Paid £50. Room not ready on arrival, some kind of leak. Given biggest suite I’ve ever seen, way bigger than our London flat. Didn’t really know what to do with the space.

Previous visit we’d had a more normal room but if anything liked it even more. My partner loved the park view, she sat in the huge bath and drew and painted whilst looking out on the view.

    • Lady London says:

Suggest you grab both while they are free or someone will make the decision for you! You can always release one if them later without charge and get all your points back.

  • Liz says:

Nothing for me for the remainder of our road trip ….

  • Mistercutts says:

Got a night for 15k at the staybridge in Manchester, many thanks.

  • Concerto says:

Booked a couple of nights at the CP in Porto as well as a couple at the HI up above Lake Zürich.

    • Andrew says:

If you haven’t been to the HI above Lake Zurich a word of warning, I was there last week. It’s very random, taking up part of a small office block at the side of a dual carriageway. There are no views – there is a small hillock and trees between the hotel and the Lake view, and the best rooms face into the courtyard as the road is so noisy.

It’s a 20 minute hike up the dual carriageway from Schindellegi station, doable but not nice. The on-site restaurant is £80+ for most meals before drinks, there’s a random biker bar at the other end of the industrial park that was decent but weird. You’ll need a car, but parking seems a ripoff.

With a car and literally using the hotel as a base to crash with a good gym and a pool you might blag free access too (very confused staff when I was there) you could do well.

      • John says:

        Free access to what?

        • Andrew says:

Free access to the pool. Gym is meant to be free, pool is reserved as part of the spa, but nobody could tell me how much hotel guests are meant to pay so I gave up in the end.

I agree with Roger on IHG in the Zurich area at least, I’ll avoid them. Next time in that Southern Lake Zurich area I will stay at a lovely independent hotel in Pfaeffikon that my client recommends…CHF150/night on the lakeside with good breakfast they say, and even for Central Zurich it’s 25 minutes on the train.

      • Roger* says:

Thank you, Andrew, for answering my questions about the Schindellegi HI before I asked them!

I looked at the photostream for the Schindellegi HI. All those non-hotel-specific photos of skiers in full gear, snow, mountains. Huh!

I have been suspicious of IHG policy in Switzerland for some time. The Crowne Plaza Zurich was an Intercontinental for a while! IMO it’s not even a good CP. And despite the website description, it is not city centre, it’s suburban Altstetten. Then the curious properties alongside motorways … Not for me.

  • Rob says:

Historically that is how it worked, yes. Interesting.

  • TripRep says:

St Petersburg West in Florida for 10k looking good, the nearby braces are some of the best in FL, if not the US.

    • TripRep says:

      *braces = beaches

    • Lady London says:

The beaches on that little stretch of coast mostly did seem very nice. Might be a good area to combine with Disneyland for a family holiday.
